Was I being unreasonable to keep a scammer on the ropes for 2 days?

Light-hearted really and just wanted to share, loads of these scams floating around out there and the worrying part is some people probably do fall for them, but I had my fun.

I've had a scam call at 6.39 am today and one yesterday just before 7 am. I was really cross today as for the last 2 mornings I've legged it downstairs in case it's about my elderly ill Mum.
The one this morning was an Amazo scam. The idiot didn't use caller withheld so I know it's a Brighton number. I'm considering having some fun ringing them at all hours now , but I would have the sense to use caller withheld.

Be careful with this it’s super common for scammers to spoof legitimate random phone numbers.

in other words someone right now could be getting a scam call from your phone number.

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/01/2023 17:13

Brilliant! Well done, OP!

ReneBumsWombats · 20/01/2023 17:15

Oh, very good!

Cranarc · 20/01/2023 17:17

"Conner". Majestic.

flumposie · 20/01/2023 17:18

Thanks @saltinesandcoffeecups I'll just imagine what I'd say instead

Biglumpycustard · 20/01/2023 17:18

That was a funny read.

Acunningruse · 20/01/2023 17:19

Bob Servant would be proud!!! Love this!

MojoJojo71 · 20/01/2023 17:20

SheWoreYellow · 20/01/2023 14:20

I particularly love the £7.30 at the end.

Same😂😂

desperadodogface · 20/01/2023 17:28

Connerlingus! You really need to get into comedy 😂

ProfessionalWeirdo · 20/01/2023 17:30

This is brilliant. Who gave up first, OP - you or the scammer?

ReneBumsWombats · 20/01/2023 17:30

I'm surprised they didn't twig when you said Connor was a bit of a prat's name...

Send old Connorlingus this thread!

donttalkaboutbookclub · 20/01/2023 17:31

I think this is the first time I really have laughed out loud on Mumsnet! Favourite part for me was about how your dad is balancing the rollos on his eyes then eating them and that's why I'm divorcing him!

DoYou · 20/01/2023 17:31

Yes, truly funny 😆

RGinaPhalange · 20/01/2023 17:35

That was bloody brilliant!!!

The image of the dad and the rollos had me howling with laughter.

When I set up a new payee on my online banking app it checks the account name against the actual records. Has the scammer given you a real name?!

Good work at stringing them along for so long!

It might well be the real name on an account they have control of, or someone 'friendly' who takes a cut to send the rest on (Google money mules for how that can work). It won't just stay in that first account, they'd line up others to funnel it through before it gets to the end point.

GlassBunion · 20/01/2023 17:40

Well done OP.
You have created a template for us all to follow when we're next scammed.

Eddielizzard · 20/01/2023 17:40

Haha that's the best thing I've read in ages!!

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/01/2023 17:45

Brilliant! I had that text and tried to get an answer back to wind them up but they ignored me 😂

Duckingella · 20/01/2023 17:48

CONNERLINGUS!

Absolutely dying at that;I do love stringing conman along but usually it's the ones that appear to have gotten themselves lost in my DM's

Duckingella · 20/01/2023 17:51

Also the have you had an accident at work cold callers;my husband tells them his boss managed to slam the van door on his penis;that usually stumps them.

That said the actual bosses mum once accidentally shot his dad in the penis with an air rifle...................

SomeoneSomewhere21 · 20/01/2023 17:52

Bloody brilliant!
My husband used to put our kids on the phone when we had scammer calls, 10 mins of my smartass toddler on the phone waffling at them and they’d give up!

NellietheElephantpackedhertrunks · 20/01/2023 17:52

YouScrewMeIScrewYouBack · 20/01/2023 17:08

Brilliant. Someone once text me a sexually harassing message with my name in it, so they knew who I was but I didn't know who they were. After they ignored my calls, I then threatened to go to the police. They apologised. But in the meantime I signed their number up for every sales call out there - windows (one that I know are particularly sales aggressive and will call you for months) penis enlargement consultation, a load of women's rights updates etc.

I hope he was harassed for weeks like I was by him!

Maybe sign that person up for all those too?

Please could you say which websites, I have a similar situation.

I once strung along a scammer from “Microsoft” who called my elderly DM. I had to put him on hold a few times but carefully followed every instruction until the screen went black…he hung up on me when I realised I didn’t have a computer and had been doing this to a microwave.
