Do you know what I've come to the realisation that the Labour government of the 90s created a feeling of potential and optimisim. I'm really out of second chances for the Tories. I think its time they go! Bring back the 90s feels.

Yes, and do you know what? I will never, ever forgive them.

'Social mobility' was a word they used a lot, until they suddenly stopped using it. The Blair government sold my generation a dream, that if only you worked hard and engaged with your Education Education Education, you could achieve anything you wanted to; you could attend a good university and occupy any profession you wished without your sex, class or other potential barriers getting in the way. It was a rhetoric very like that often heard in the US, (which puts similar barriers in people's way, albeit differently constructed).

Nice dream. But unfortunately one predicated on a completely false debt bubble, which was always going to leave carnage behind it on the day it eventually popped. Which it did, on 18 September 2008.

We were sold a pup.

Everything except having no money or confidence. If present day me could go back to 1990 (with my income) I’d do it like a shot.

JustDanceAddict · 07/04/2023 18:18

My 20s 😆
uni
snogging loads of blokes (early 20s)
going out in a Friday after work ‘for a quick one’, hours later you’re still in the pub
being w dh but still having fun social life w our respective friends
no social media!!
great high street shops - oasis, warehouse, river island et al
when Labour got in - what a time to be alive! I still remember singing ‘things can only get better’ with my friend walking down the high st!
obviously there were shit things too but overall it was a great time. Now life feels pretty dull - early 50s, Health a bit dodgy, working but not really where I should be career wise etc!!

This thread is amazing. I miss so much from the 90s. Things we did that we thought made us rebels that wouldn’t even be a second thought for kids these days. I miss the innocence of the charts, taking a couple of quid to Our Price or Woolworths to spend hours choosing a cassette single to buy and hoping the B side made it worth while. I miss Saturday night television that involved the family sitting down together and watching shows like Gladiators and You Bet, even Blind Date. I miss pressing record when the top 40 was on the radio. I miss computer games costing £1.99. I miss the magazines like Smash Hits, and cherishing the pages that printed the lyrics. Oh the Smash Hits poll winners party was superb. I love the 90s 😂

MS DOS.

I feel such a pang of nostalgia now for being hopeful about politics, being young and slim, raving all night, good eccies, affordable housing, walking out of a job into another..... I really feel for young people now who have none of this.

Flufferblub · 25/09/2023 08:33

Being skinny. That's it really. I was at school in the 90s, and I didn't like school. I had the best time when I was 16 and went to college. I liked earning my own money, spending my own money, but tbh, I've never quite clicked in any where. I'm always just on the outside of anyone's circle.

Lupin61 · 25/09/2023 08:36

Cadbury marble bar
Sara Lee chocolate gataeux
Spice Girls impulse

Blind Date with Cilla
so many good films
TOTP
Pizza Land
Fruit soaps from The Body Shop
Mizz, Shout & Bliss magazines

twistyizzy · 25/09/2023 08:39

@NannyOggsWhiskyStash yes there was a sense of hope and optimism. I was first year uni when Labour got in but even before then, during my early teens there was a feeling that things could get better. We had more freedom as teenagers and I was 3 stone lighter!
I really worry about DD and the opportunities she will have.

MorrisZapp · 25/09/2023 09:08

I've always hated Blind Date! But I loved raving all night in condemned ancient buildings in Edinburgh's Old Town, with dry ice and fag smoke mingling with the patchouli and CK1.

Best part was taking thirty quid out with you and coming home with twenty eight quid in change rammed into three different pockets. Never did work that one out. Used to count it into neat piles like a covetous old miser.

MorrisZapp · 25/09/2023 09:09

Never watched X Files either but my mum once shared a steam room with D Duchovny, a very nineties happening.

Oh waking up feeling hungover and then catching the whiff of the smoky clothes from the night before being enough to bring up last nights excesses 😂

MorrisZapp · 25/09/2023 12:23

Sarah Beeney's endless head tilted haranguing:

'Beth and Richard spent far too much personalising this home, and eight thousand pounds worth of mirror tiles will not make the property more saleable. They bought it for eighty thousand pounds, spent a hundred thousand pounds on ghastly pish upgrading it, and sold it for three hundred and forty six grand. (ALL TOGETHER NOW) This profit is due to a rise in the market, and they were lucky not to make a loss on that shitty hot tub'

Ilikeviognier · 25/09/2023 12:38

@vera99 me too. It’s hard isn’t it. If only I’d known in the 90s they would both be gone by the time I was 32 I would have appreciated them more.

other things from the 90s- hooch, Friday night tv like the word and TFI Friday. Going to nightclubs and feeling so grown up and wowed by it all 🤣. Also top shop and Tammy girl.
