Watching the x files just now got me thinking about the 90s

It was much easier to do and decide to go somewhere and just turn up- think cinema, football matches, gigs. Pay on the door sometimes.

So you could have a plan but change it if you felt a bit off colour or just not in the mood to go out.

HeadacheEarthquake · 20/01/2023 16:03

Being fed and housed by my parents 🤣 did not appreciate it at the time

Daisymaker · 20/01/2023 16:11

My waist

Rubyupbeat · 20/01/2023 16:43

My boys being little

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/01/2023 16:49

Ah the university years... I miss
My waistline
My capacity to party until dawn and then get up after 2 hours sleep and do a full day
Being carefree with essentially no responsibility other than churning out a few essays per term

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/01/2023 17:19

Being able to just go to the pub on the spur of the moment. Sometimes a quick drink would turn into a late night with or without food. No booking in advance or only having a table for 2 hours. Plenty of nice pubs that had good music - not all fancy wine bars, gin bars, cocktail bars, having to decide in advance if you were going to eat.

Potatopuffsandtangytoms · 20/01/2023 17:37

Like others have said, the hope and optimism.

The TV shows. Renting a video. Cadburys Sprias and proper pic n mix.

Everything felt more exciting, a cinema trip, a shopping trip, Christmas, getting a takeaway, such excitement and anticipation. I'm not sure whether that was just my youth or because things weren't so readily available as they are now.

I wouldn't want to go back but I do love the nostalgia.

Wafflehouse · 20/01/2023 17:45

Oh, I forgot the gigs! So cheap and easy to get tickets, not all tours being stadium tours but actual local venues you could get tickets for £10 and not have to get them three years in advance. You could just phone up or go to the venue to buy an actual physical ticket. Even the touts were better then, outside the venue and didn’t totally take the piss with what they charged.

arghtriffid · 20/01/2023 17:46

Any evidence of drunken nights was a few blurry shots via an instant camera at best but the cameras only came on special nights. And never any videos of our drunken antics thank fuck.

Yes imagine if someone had a VHS video camera filming everyone on a night out. They would have been thrown out!

GossipIsMarmite · 20/01/2023 17:46

Spira chocolate bars

Take That

Taping my favourite top 40 songs off the radio.

Friends Tv show

No mobile phones or pointless Social media like Facebook.

people being nice to each other.

Less narcissistic people about.

Smash Hits and Big magazine.

Going to the shops and buying a few chocolate bars for £1.

Mars bars being much bigger.

Penfriends. I enjoyed sending and receiving letters from them.

People didn’t seem to want to get one over on you or enjoy watching people fail or hating anyone succeed back then - or maybe I was just surrounded by better friends back then.

perms.

Going to blockbusters.

Taking less photos. Living in the moment more.

The anticipation of picking photos up from the shop after they had been developed and trying to remember what you had taken photos of.

I remember drinking a lot of peach schnapps, taboo and lemonade and Cinzano.

Nights out costing a lot less than they do today.

Shopping in C&A for clothes.

Woolworths for pick n mix.

Bring back the 90s!

1FootInTheRave · 20/01/2023 17:47

Position of the fortnight in More magazine.

5 vodka shots in revolution for a fiver.

Clubbing outfits, getting in at 5am then going to college/work.

I’m pretty sure I had the bottom left one. Never found a shade since that matched it. Ditto Brighton Rock and Dancing Queen. 99p each.

These were just the best. 90p lasted ages. Me and my best friend had pretty much the full range between us!

I loved the silver metallic one, it was bloody amazing and the dark purple called Morticia...

Used to do loads of different designs, lots of alternating colours and things. My friend had a steadier hand and did glitter tips and things too.

We used them to customise DMs too!

And perfumes -
CKOne
so……?
Exclamation

GossipIsMarmite · 20/01/2023 18:28

Just thought of some more

fruit polos

Toffo

The original trolls - I collected quite a few.

And does anyone remember wearing little plastic dummies and collecting them? They looked a bit like plastic versions of the glassy sweet lollies you get at the beach, but smaller. Everyone in my school used to collect them.

Waitingforcoffee · 20/01/2023 18:32

Also re clothes, there wasn't really fast fashion as such. There were cheaper clothes shops but people still bought cheaper clothes to wear again and again.

My friends and I had 2 or 3 going-out outfits each maximum and we rotated them. I was a bit more alternative so I often customised or chose items that were a bit different (I loved Betty Boo's space age style) but a lot of the girls would just wear simple jeans (probably close to mom-jeans these days), a stretch top and black ankle boots and a black cropped jacket, the jeans, boots and jacket would be worn with everything, the top would be the main event).

Back then we weren't obsessed with lots and lots of everything (bags, shoes, clothes, makeup). I could probably fitted my entire clothes and accessories into one normal size suitcase and still have space left over back then!

MissWings · 20/01/2023 18:37

What do I miss about the 90s?

Gosh, I Miss everything

I Miss my Nanny from the 90s when she was alive, I miss playing out on my old council estate. I miss singing into a hairbrush to the spice girls and I miss my childhood best friend. I miss going to the church that was attached to my Catholic primary school and I miss making daisy chains on the school field whilst chatting to my best friend. The latter being one of my favourite memories.

catchingclouds · 20/01/2023 19:31

I loved Spectacular nail varnishes! My favourite was ballet slippers and baby blues.

Shout magazine with Cathy's A Problem Shared page

Being obsessed with the Backstreet Boys before the stories of legal issues and drug use came out

In general the 90s felt like the final years that technology had a more balanced presence in life. Everyone had cameras but they used film, the internet existed but it was in it's early days and mobile phones existed but only rich people had them.

Januaryisjustaweirdmonth · 20/01/2023 20:27

Ohhh, some of these are making me almost weep with nostalgia, miss it all so much, wish I could live it all again

pastypirate · 20/01/2023 20:28

This is so true. Tech was interesting and exciting but you could go weeks without requiring it.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/01/2023 20:47

Miss nothing at all. Crappy school & uni, hated both. Stifling family dominated by elderly grandparents. Meh.

Glitterybee · 20/01/2023 20:56

such nostalgia reading this post!

love it!!!!!

Left · 20/01/2023 21:05

Having an amazing group of friends. I miss them so much! Music. Nights out on cider and coming home with change from a fiver. Leaving home. Being a crustie and finding my way. Art college. Watching My So Called Life on tv. Positivity. Festivals. Sneaking into Glastonbury. Body Shop White Musk, impulse body spray, and a dupe of CK1. Skinny eyebrows. Party culture. Homemade mixtapes. Moving out and working out how to survive. Spectacular nail varnish. Clothes from charity shops. Having plans for the future.
