Pinching stuff from hotel rooms/villas

Do you do it? Is it acceptable, is it illegal? I actually have no idea.
Would you take bath soaps/bubbles etc, loo rolls, towels, a robe?
Just curious really
I’ve always taken the little bottles/soaps with me when I’ve left somewhere I’ve stayed and thought nothing of it.
Do people take more though and is that illegal actually?

No I wouldn’t.
The little shampoo bottles I would have taken (pre recycling & reducing plastic times) as a little souvenir and had them in a basket in the bathroom, but robes & toilet roll??! Nope.

Twospaniels · 19/01/2023 21:27

I would only take the mini toiletries and sometimes the tea bags and biscuits. I would never take the robes or towels.

Ihatethenewlook · 19/01/2023 21:30

Funnily enough, stealing is illegal. Complimentary items (biscuits, mini shampoos etc) are free to take. Towels and robes they intend to keep are not. Most places I’ve stayed in have taken a deposit, the cost of any missing items are taken out of the deposit.

WhyIsntItFridayYet · 19/01/2023 21:30

I’ve just been looking for the thread I remember reading where a poster was contacted by the hotel and asked to return the posh, full sized, bottle of lotion or shower gel or something but I can’t find it.

SavoirFlair · 19/01/2023 21:30

It’s an incredibly craven and depressingly British way of thinking that because we have paid for a room, we can give ourselves an extra little “treat” by stealing something that actually belongs to the hotel and would be reused for another guest.

its just so typical of the “if I don’t, someone else will” , grab what you can mentality.

I have never done it, because I’m not poor or desperate or weird

JustKeepSlimming · 19/01/2023 21:30

I'll take something home if I've opened it (eg soap, those little bottles of shampoo etc), and I always take all the biscuits on offer, but other than that I can't be bothered - I never use the little moisturisers or conditioner once i get them home.

DH would clear the room if he could. In practice he limits himself to tissues, toilet roll, all the bottles, and all the tea and coffee. We'd never take a bathrobe or towels.

Ihatethenewlook · 19/01/2023 21:31

Thinking about it more, the last hotel I stayed in was really nice. Had large bottles of posh shampoo and shower gel, that were bolted to the wall in refillable bottles. I guess a lot of people like you take the piss

Kissedbyfire1 · 19/01/2023 21:31

There was a similar thread to this a while back where the OP’s young relative had taken the big bottle of shampoo from the dispenser in the shower. The girl and her mother refused to take it back and the question was whether it was ok to take such an item.
I wouldn’t take anything other than the plastic shower caps and I would eat the biscuits.

Pmsl crossed posts. They should have bolted them to the wall!! 😂

I think that’s the one I mean

blackpearwhitelilies · 19/01/2023 21:33

I take the tiny complimentary toiletries and sometimes the biscuits, but i
usually I just eat them. I wouldn’t take anything else. I’d never take a robe - that’s obviously not complimentary.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 19/01/2023 21:33

Who on earth doesn't immediately eat the biscuits but instead takes them home? 😂

MolkosTeenageAngst · 19/01/2023 21:34

If there are little individual biscuit packets provided with the tea and coffee and I’m not going to eat them during my stay I usually take them. I wouldn’t usually take anything else although think mini soaps and shampoo etc are usually complimentary so wouldn’t feel bad about taking them if I wanted them.

Obviously I wouldn’t consider taking a robe or toilet roll or anything like that!

The soap / shampoo etc yes. And the complimentary water. Nothing else.

Toilet roll??? Really?

ZenNudist · 19/01/2023 21:35

Mini jam! My dc love a mini jam from breakfast.

I'm chronic for taking shampoo and shower gel. I have tonnes which I never use.

Woahtherehoney · 19/01/2023 21:36

I take any toiletries I’ve opened (if they’re obviously to take, not anything bolted to the wall or in big bottles clearly meant to stay), and sometimes tea/coffee if it’s one I like. Never anything else!

I have stayed in a few hotels where there’s been a sign to say the slippers are yours to keep so I’ve taken them before (but only where it’s obvious they are to keep)

PassAnotherJumper · 19/01/2023 21:37

I eat all the biscuits Blush

The shampoo etc never seems as good as the stuff in my wash bag (or, at least, never suits me as well) so I hardly ever use it and don't take it.

Robes and anything that is not toiletries is theft and you should be charged on your card for the items once housekeeping realised you have stolen them

thinkponk48 · 19/01/2023 21:37

I accidentally stole a small hand/hair towel from my honeymoon hotel. Genuinely it just for mixed up with the washing when we where packing up. Fifteen years later it still lives at the back of my towel cupboard, always feel a touch guilty when I see it.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 19/01/2023 21:37

I’ve taken the mini toiletries and a packet of complimentary biscuits before, but nothing more. I’d never take something like towels, robes, slippers, large bottles etc. They’re not to be taken - it’s stealing.

gogohmm · 19/01/2023 21:38

Only the open mini toiletries as they get thrown

ThighMistress · 19/01/2023 21:39

I remember that thread. Amazingly there were posters supporting her! It’s surely obvious that if the bottles are big they are not for taking home.

when I’ve stayed at hotels recently there have been little notices advising that you can buy the products at reception.

My cousin is a hotel manager: some people managed to steal the mattress!

BloaterW1 · 19/01/2023 21:41

Depends how well it's screwed down

HobnobsChoice · 19/01/2023 21:42

This was one of the threads where someone took the big bottles
