Pinching stuff from hotel rooms/villas

Do you do it? Is it acceptable, is it illegal? I actually have no idea.
Would you take bath soaps/bubbles etc, loo rolls, towels, a robe?
Just curious really
I’ve always taken the little bottles/soaps with me when I’ve left somewhere I’ve stayed and thought nothing of it.
Do people take more though and is that illegal actually?

Ok, I feel better now as always take the shampoos etc, nothing else, but have read of people that do 🙈
It doesn’t make sense though, so if there’s a basket full of lots of minis, it’s ok to take those, but not if there’s a larger bottle of one shower gel? Are all gels/soaps classed as complimentary or not?

Devoutspoken · 19/01/2023 21:49

Why do you need them?

rookiemere · 19/01/2023 21:50

I take the mini toiletries as useful for my basic gym with showers but no shower gel or shampoo. If we're planning camping we take the uht milk containers and tea and coffee sachets, plus biscuits of course.

Wouldn't dream of taking towels or robes as they are part of the room.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 19/01/2023 21:51

I take the mini shampoo, shower gel and the tea bags/coffee sachets and biscuits. Never anything else and especially not those massive bottles, you’re not supposed to take those!

Chowtime · 19/01/2023 21:51

I don't steal from hotels no.

For those of you that do - don't forget the batteries in the remote control.

Anon778833 · 19/01/2023 21:52

No, I would only take stuff that is meant for you to use. Stealing things is horrible behaviour and I would not do it.

AppleandSpice · 19/01/2023 21:53

Only the mini toiletries if we’ve used them, but if we haven’t opened them then just leave them.
Oh and those towelling slipper things but only if there’s a sign/note to say they’re fine to keep/ take home.

Wouldnt dream of taking anything like robes, toilet rolls, towels etc as they’re not there for the taking.

Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2023 21:53

Little opened sized ones I'd take home. Don't tend to open or eat the biscuits. Taking loo rolls/towels and robes-that's a no. Why stop there, take the lightbulbs and the batteries from the remote control and maybe the kettle and cups?

unclebuck · 19/01/2023 21:54

During a brief career as a chamber maid I was told to bin all the small sized toiletries as apparently tampering with them is a weird thing/fetish some people do (this tampering was explained to me in lurid detail by the manager) So I always take them. Nothing else thou, that is stealing.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 19/01/2023 21:54

Why would anyone take the robes, so many people will have work them. Yuk.

Januaryisjustaweirdmonth · 19/01/2023 21:55

@unclebuck Fetish how 😬

I imagine male customers make a deposit in the bottles. Envy

They get a wash between guests just like the towels presumably.

SavoirFlair · 19/01/2023 21:30

It’s an incredibly craven and depressingly British way of thinking that because we have paid for a room, we can give ourselves an extra little “treat” by stealing something that actually belongs to the hotel and would be reused for another guest.

its just so typical of the “if I don’t, someone else will” , grab what you can mentality.

I have never done it, because I’m not poor or desperate or weird

I don't think it's British - there are immoral people in all countries. I knew this Italian guy who lived and worked opposite a gift shop and if a delivery was left outside before the shop opened, he stole it. He stole a large, expensive looking clock and even tried to steal a sofa. Despicable.

StaceySolomonSwash · 19/01/2023 21:59

The biscuits get scoffed within minutes of me arriving. Tea and coffee gets drunk in the morning, mini toiletries I'm not that desperate for!

IntentionalError · 19/01/2023 22:00

I stay in a lot of chain hotels, and I always take the little bottles of toiletries plus any teabags, biscuits, bottles of ‘free’ water & sachets of coffee & sugar that I don’t use. It isn’t stealing because they are part of the price of the room.

unclebuck · 19/01/2023 22:00

@Januaryisjustaweirdmonth Oh man, really? Men jizzed in them off course 😂😂

This does remind me of when my brother was billed for a £150 robe after his honeymoon. He went berserk and eventually did a section 75 on his credit card accusing the hotel of besmirching his good name etc. He was very pleased with himself. About 6 months later his wife swanned into the lounge one night wearing it 😂😂

HE WAS FURIOUS. They are divorced now but that was due to other issues 😂

asblindasabat · 19/01/2023 22:00

Wouldn’t take any things like towels and robes etc but I would take biscuits/sweets or any body wash/soaps they left as they are meant for you, and you only.

unclebuck · 19/01/2023 22:01

RatSlave · 19/01/2023 21:56

more eloquently put 😂

Addymontgomeryfan · 19/01/2023 22:01

That thread about being asked for the big bottles is hilarious, the OP kept bringing up how big and important her husband was.

I just take the mini bottles, my DC loves them 😂.

purplecorkheart · 19/01/2023 22:02

When they had them I would take the bottle of body lotion as I used to carry it as handcream in my handbag. Shower caps I take to use as shoe covers when packing.

There is one hotel I stay in that always have two or three quirky teabags along with the usual. I tend to take them home. The hotel only gives papercups in the room, if they had mugs or cups I would use them inroom.

Anon778833 · 19/01/2023 22:03

@Januaryisjustaweirdmonth how do we vote on this?

QueSyrahSyrah · 19/01/2023 22:03

Individual toiletries & coffee / tea / biscuits bits, fine.

Slippers, usually fine (they're not reused).

Anything else, straight up theft.

MiniTheMinx · 19/01/2023 22:06

No never. I prefer my own toiletries.

Drank the entire contents of the mini bar though 😀 was probably charged for this, but I wasn't paying!

UrsulaPandress · 19/01/2023 22:07

Hell no. None are as good as my own.
