Pinching stuff from hotel rooms/villas

Do you do it? Is it acceptable, is it illegal? I actually have no idea.
Would you take bath soaps/bubbles etc, loo rolls, towels, a robe?
Just curious really
I’ve always taken the little bottles/soaps with me when I’ve left somewhere I’ve stayed and thought nothing of it.
Do people take more though and is that illegal actually?

Nope. I don’t want/need more toiletries.
Obviously I would drink the bottled water.

HadEnoughNoise · 19/01/2023 22:11

I'm really shocked at the number of people who take the tea and coffee. I don't think there's anything that bad with actually taking it, but tbh I just find it a bit pathetic Confused

Definitely not the bathrobes. If you do, you deserve to be charged for them

They get a wash between guests just like the towels presumably.

I hope so but seeing as apparently they use the used towels to dry the cups, who knows! 🤢

I think that very much depends on the establishment.

We run a holiday let in a UK city centre. We "lose" about 4 hairdryers a year. A pair of kitchen scissors about twice a year. We have had lightbulbs taken. Loo roll, toilet duck, washing up liquid.

Essentially, people often are lovely - leaving us wine to say thank you etc. Sometimes it is an accident - thinking it belongs to another guest and packing it. But, mostly, we factor it into our costs.

Annoying though!!!

LondonLovie · 19/01/2023 22:24

I mean why not also take the mirror and a bit of bedding whilst you are at it.. why are towel free game? Blush

Wayk · 19/01/2023 22:25

No way would I take stuff from a hotel. Would you use pillows other people slept in or towels others have used. Why take stuff just save up and buy it.

KimberleyClark · 19/01/2023 22:27

Mini toiletries yes but only if I really really liked them. Disposable shower caps. Biscuits yes. Nothing else.

Fullsomefrenchie · 19/01/2023 22:27

God wtf nicks the toilet roll. And no you don’t steal the towels and robe, how cringe.

anyone remember the couple years ago who emptied the room out the window, caught by someone making off with the tv?

Hobbesmanc · 19/01/2023 22:28

Just the biscuits. Unless it's a really good shower gel

Although once we pinched a rather lovely ice bucket that was left in the corridor. But felt really bad after.

BashfulClam · 19/01/2023 22:29

We joke about taking the trouser press home but in reality take complimentary stuff only.

AdoraBell · 19/01/2023 22:30

Maybe the biscuits and tea/coffee but definitely not loo roll/towels etc.

I was once at a black tie dinner in a fancy London hotel and the host’s wife took 2 champagne flutes and a crystal candle stick 🤦‍♀️

Mydogatemypurse · 19/01/2023 22:31

I dont take anything just enjoy it whilst im there

KimberleyClark · 19/01/2023 22:31

What do people think of filling up bottles from the juice dispensers at the breakfast buffet? Not me, but have seen others doing it.

littlegreenheart · 19/01/2023 22:32

I once discovered, when I checked in and went to my hotel room, that the lightbulbs had been completely removed from all four of the lamps - desk, floor lamp, lamp on bedside table x2. Each lamp had a shade which completely covered the bulb, so I understand that housekeeping would have missed this unless they intentionally checked, especially as there were also ceiling lights.

I mean - there is no way someone thought that was genuinely expected or accepted, it's just seeing what you can get away with. (This was in the USA though; probably not British people!)

determinedtomakethiswork · 19/01/2023 22:33

If I was with a guy who stole the toilet roll from the hotel, I would dump him so fast. How pathetic and humiliating to steal something like that when you don't need it.

EasterIsland · 19/01/2023 22:35

Why would you take anything? Are you so poor that you have to take all the tea and coffee, or the biscuits? Usually hotel shampoo and soap are pretty horrible - I don’t even use them, let alone take them.

TangledWebOfDeception · 19/01/2023 22:35

Mini toiletries and other similar amenities, yes.
Biscuits/treats, yes.

Anything else, absolutely not.

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 19/01/2023 22:36

Surely the TV, wardrobe and trouser press are fair game as well….? Sod the biscuits!

Merrilydancing · 19/01/2023 22:36

I’m did take a large bottle of very expensive shower gel but it was, I think, made clear that I could take it as I used some during the stay and housekeeping put another unopened bottle in the bathroom which I did leave.

SlippinKimmy · 19/01/2023 22:36

I would only take the mini toiletries if I liked them, and I always take the disposable shower caps as I like to wear them when I put my makeup on (to keep hair off my face, not a weird fetish).

I remember going on holiday with a couple of friends and both of them took branded towels from the hotel back with them as a souvenir - I was so embarrassed! It really is just stealing…

I remember

Fullsomefrenchie · 19/01/2023 22:37

Also see a lot of folks pocketing food at the hotel breakfasts. Like palming rolls and pastries and packs of Nutella. It’s so cringe.

IScreamMonday · 19/01/2023 22:37

I have no idea why people do this. I have teabags and better shampoo in my house. As for toilet rolls - really?? Some places refill the little bottles, they are not intended for mono-use

Simonjt · 19/01/2023 22:38

The mini toiletries in your room and biscuita fine, nothing elsw though. We have a little holiday let and people have stolen books, mugs, cutlery, two hair driers, cushions, towels, board games and a brand new unopened huge box of dishwasher tabs.
