Pinching stuff from hotel rooms/villas

Januaryisjustaweirdmonth · 19/01/2023 21:22

Do you do it? Is it acceptable, is it illegal? I actually have no idea.
Would you take bath soaps/bubbles etc, loo rolls, towels, a robe?
Just curious really
I’ve always taken the little bottles/soaps with me when I’ve left somewhere I’ve stayed and thought nothing of it.
Do people take more though and is that illegal actually?

Those thin toweling slippers get thrown away if they are opened and used so you might as well take them if you want them - in most places anyway

caringcarer · 19/01/2023 23:38

Biscuits, t bags and mini soap as once you have opened and used it they would only throw it away. I certainly would not steal anything. Taking toilet rolls ....rediculous. You can't be that hard up.

I take loads of things, everything is overpriced, hotels make a lot of money, If I like something in the room like a good towel or wash cloth I'll take it. Same with posh shampoo and conditioner. I will even ask for a replacement saying I've used it all and take that too. I once left a hotel in London with 2 L'occitane full size set of toiletries worth collectively £120. They are put in the room to be used they can't dictate how many baths or showers a day I have so maybe i did use all the soap and lotions and hair products. Same with the towels, plush fluffy towels and bath mats I will get a replacement because I "spilled" something and take them. Our camping crockery is full of stolen items, mugs saucers, loads of tea bags and coffee sachets, biscuits hotel chocolat sachets. All very handy stuff to have. Never once been called out for it either. Makes me want to go stay somewhere again writing this Wink

This sort of thing really bothers me because ultimately the cost gets passed onto the consumer as "shrinkage" etc. Hopefully karma will sort you out

EBearhug · 19/01/2023 23:45

Mini toiletries and biscuits (I don't drink tea or coffee) and complimentary water.

I was away this weekend, and took hotel shampoo I'd had a while rather than a big bottle.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 19/01/2023 23:51

I went to the theatre last night and the people next to us stole the binoculars. They paid the £1 to get them but didn’t put them back! Some people are awful.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 19/01/2023 23:54

I'll sometimes take the little tidily miniature bottles of shampoo, body wash etc, if they smell nice. If not I'll use them there and bin what's left over. Usually abroad cos I don't stay anywhere apart from travel lodge or premier inn over here.

Biscuits don't last more than about 5 minutes. As soon as I'm in the room the kettles on and I'm having a cuppa and a few biccies as soon as I've unpacked. Depending on how long I'm staying I usually have to go to reception to ask for more teabags, coffee sachets and milk but leave what I don't use in the room on leaving. Did take half a toilet roll once though. I woke up with my nose dripping like a tap and didn't particularly fancy spending the 3 hour train journey home wiping my nose on my sleeve.

Muffins off the breakfast buffet. Yes I take a few usually to have with a cuppa for my dinner once I'm back in the room later on.

I did once also take the room key card home with me. Completely by accident. I put it in my back pocket ready to post in the wooden box when checking out. Went to double check the time of my train and completely forgot about it. It wasn't until I got home later that night and put my jeans down for wash that I felt it. I did ring the premier inn up and told them I'd still got it but they weren't all that bothered.

UsingChangeofName · 19/01/2023 23:56

Funnily enough, stealing is illegal. Complimentary items (biscuits, mini shampoos etc) are free to take. Towels and robes they intend to keep are not.

This.
I would take something that would be thrown out (say, the rest of the tiny bottles of shower gel or shampoo, if I'd only used half but thy aren't going to leave a 1/2 bottle for the next guest.)
I might take the little biscuit if I hadn't eaten it whilst there, and I have been known to take a couple of the sugar sticks as dh uses them when he goes camping, and I don't take sugar. My thinking is, if I did take sugar, they would be gone / used so it doesn't matter they go in his drink not mine.
But I wouldn't take stuff I hadn't, in effect, bought off them.

CuntyChopss · 20/01/2023 00:22

I’ve taken the usual toiletries etc. Also once took a towel, in my defence it was because during the night I came on unexpectedly. Luckily I caught the worst on my pjs and none got on the bed. Went in the shower and half asleep dried myself before putting my mooncup in and got blood on the towel. Didn’t want the cleaners to have to deal with it so I took it home. Used as a dirty floor towel. I don’t feel bad for that I couldn’t cope with the guilt of leaving a period blood stained towel.

Dummycrusher · 20/01/2023 00:31

Who the fuck can be bothered having itty bitty bottles of crap toiletries and random teabags and cheap cardboard slippers floating round? I spend most of my life battling the relentless tide of shite that floods my house (mainly courtesy of children), why would I willingly add more?!

TellMeTheTruthTheWholeTruth · 20/01/2023 02:12

I wouldn't steal anything!

I take the small toiletries but that's it!

Although I've stayed in the Savoy a couple of times (courtesy of my employer) and they leave you slippers which you can take home. They obviously don't expect others to wear them and they can't be washed, unlike a bath robe!

Ottil · 20/01/2023 02:17

I'm pretty fussy about toiletries and use my own - I'm really not minded to take any. It wouldn't cross my mind to steal a robe or towel.

I usually take a couple of teabags and biscuits or whatever, if they're nice ones.

TellMeTheTruthTheWholeTruth · 20/01/2023 02:21

I know someone who always takes things as a "souvenir/keepsake" from wherever they go!

They've got some nice whisky glasses engraved "Orient Express" from a trip on the train a number of years ago.

I wouldn't have the gall.

GrandDesignCockUp · 20/01/2023 02:29

I don’t normally even use the toiletries. I travel a lot and take my own stuff because I like nice products.

Even a nice hotel’s products aren’t generally as nice as the stuff I buy myself.

TellMeTheTruthTheWholeTruth · 20/01/2023 02:30

purplecorkheart · 19/01/2023 22:02

When they had them I would take the bottle of body lotion as I used to carry it as handcream in my handbag. Shower caps I take to use as shoe covers when packing.

There is one hotel I stay in that always have two or three quirky teabags along with the usual. I tend to take them home. The hotel only gives papercups in the room, if they had mugs or cups I would use them inroom.

You put your shoes in a shower cap?

What's wrong with a carrier bag?

TerfOnATrain · 20/01/2023 02:51

Generally speaking the tea and coffee are shite in hotels, who bothers taking catering tea and Nescafé sachets home?

when I’ve stayed in nicer hotels with Nespresso machines, I’ve drunk the pods.

i always take the complimentary shower caps, so useful. DH stays in hotels all week, takes his own toiletries as he says they’re better.

I’ve got dozens of those plastic room cards - we always get at least two between us and inevitably one gets left in a handbag or trouser pocket by accident.

'Oh, everyone takes things from hotel rooms!'
Lister: 'I took the bed!'

Flatandhappy · 20/01/2023 03:32

Most hotels I stay in have really good shampoo and conditioner so I will take the little bottles home for DD, I will only take the body lotion if I have opened it. Again if I have used the toothbrush and toothpaste provided I will take it with me as it obviously can’t be used again and I have a bad habit of forgetting to pack my toothbrush. I am more inclined to bring extra coffee pods with me than take what is in the hotel. I love it when hotels have big bottles of nice products attached to the walls, so much less wasteful.

GoAgainstNicki · 20/01/2023 03:35

I do

GoAgainstNicki · 20/01/2023 03:47

Just read the full thread and I can’t believe someone managed to take a mattress. How is that even possible?! I would have loved to take the mattress from the Blakemore Hotel in Hyde Park as it really was amazing.

The funny thing about these threads is when posters admit to what they’ve taken and people comment, ‘how in the world do you not think this is stealing? You’re a thief, you disgust me’ etc. Like those (myself included) who have pinched things, know that it’s stealing. I’ve never seen anyone say ‘I’ve taken x y and z but it’s not considered stealing for these reasons.’

Saying that though, since I’ve become a mum I’ve made the conscious decision to not steal stuff from hotels as it doesn’t belong to me. Whereas a couple years ago when I was 19/20, I wouldn’t have cared less. I’ve still got two lovely towels that I took from the Crowne Plaza hotel🫣

GoAgainstNicki · 20/01/2023 03:49

Also, I guess this is slightly different but if someone doesn’t pay for a 20p/30p plastic bag, do you consider them a thief?

Bizarre. Before you became a mumypu had no sense of right and wrong?

ThreeblackCats · 20/01/2023 04:03

I rent my spare bedroom and bathroom out. I provide bottled water, sweeties, dove soap, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, fluffy robes, slippers for long stays, wifi access. All for £40 per night with discount for long stays.

l have had bedding stolen!

It’s so depressing having to send that first email to someone asking if they inadvertently took home my bedding then having to report the theft to Airbnb to get the cost refunded.

I do not take anything from hotels as I usually prefer my own brand of shampoo etc.

Of course I did. I just didn’t care

Adviceneeded200 · 20/01/2023 04:05

I used to take the small bottles of shampoo and shower gel. Built up a fair stock and gave them to the hospital during covid when they sent out a request because families were unable to supply.

Since then I've realised how much plastic they use and leave them clear of water in the hotel so it's obvious they've not been used and take my own.

Never dream of anything else.
