Me and my friend both go to the same hair salon and both get full head of highlights and a cut which now costs £160
Last Monday morning I booked an appointment for yesterday (the following Monday )
The afternoon they put a offer on fb /Instagram 50% off colour in January -book now.
So my friend booked in for yesterday too (Monday )
Got to the till hers came to £80 and she charged me £160
I asked why I didn't get the 50% off colour and she said I had booked my appointment 2 hours before they put the social media post out there for the 50% off colours
Aibu to think that's unfair ?
I go there every 7 weeks and have done for years

Am I the only one frankly boggling at spending £160 on a cut and colour, every seven weeks so seven times a year. That's £1,120 on your hair over the year.

There's quite a substantial home dye section in many chemists, so I'd say you're not an outlier. I used to spend about £75 for a cut and finish about 20 years ago, so that was a fair bit back then. I also spent a stupid amount on Bumble and Bumble products. These days I have less money and different priorities. I use solid shampoo and conditioner bars, which aren't cheap, but a lot cheaper than B&B and last for ages, and I make my own styling product. I use a plant-based home dye and cut my hair myself - it's curly so I can get away with it. If I had more money I'd get a better cut, but it's hair. It grows anyway.

JudgeRudy · 17/01/2023 14:05

I wouldn't call it unfair no, I'd call it tough luck....similar to buying something then seeing it in the sales the next day. If the person in the next chair wasn't your friend you'd be none the wiser.
I'd maybe ask what incentives they're offering for loyal customers to book in advance. You'll get more through being pleasant.

I am admittedly low maintenance and have short hair - I had it cut at a barbers for £18 at the weekend, do that about 4-5 times a year. And dye it vibrant colours at home with a £5 box dye or some bleach and henna or bleach and semi permanent colour, less than £10 for sure, a couple of times a year. Definitely less than £160 over a year.

Do most people send closer to £160 or £1,120 annually on their hair?

A lot of women don't want a man's haircut that is dyed bright blue.

@NoseyNellie

I'm not sure that we have enough information to say whether or not they're meeting trading standards regs as we haven't seen the wording of the post.

Regardless, I wouldn't bother arguing the legal side but might contact the manager and hope they agree it is a poor way to treat a loyal customer.

I think we do have enough info. She booked at appointment as the standard price. Later on there was an offer...bit like an item being reduced in the sales after you've bought it. I don't think there's any legal argument.

I bought a dress from Jigsaw a few years ago on a Sunday. It was £200 and on the Monday went in the sale with 40% off which was £60 reduction. I took the dress back and repurchased the same dress in the sale (she literally handed me the same dress back), however, she did say they would honour a discount as well if I had just popped in without bothering with the transaction - I did not know that she would do this so I went through the process of returning it first.

Blossomtoes · 17/01/2023 13:32

This is like paying full price for a dress and being pissed off because it’s reduced in the sale. Yes, it’s annoying but it’s just one of those things.

It's not really. It's like buying a dress and then the person after you getting the same one for half the price.

AssumingDirectControl · 17/01/2023 14:14

It’s easier to get an even blue shade at home than it is for an even blonde colour (not to mention the damage). The blue shade can probably be whacked on and cover up any orangey bits.

That reminds me of when I tried to dye my hair blue some years ago now. Let’s just say for a while afterwards all my friends called me Sully after the Monsters Inc character.

OP as your friend was in same situation as you, being a regular customer on the same day, I think I’d give them a chance to honour the offer but be clear if they don’t you’ll take your custom elsewhere.

ihaveopinions · 17/01/2023 14:17

I can see both sides really. The salon wants to drum up new business and probably should have stated 'new customers only' for 50% off and maybe offered a lower percentage off for regular customers. You could contact the salon manager about your annoyance or go elsewhere. If you like the salon otherwise don't kick up too much of a fuss as finding a hair stylist you like and trust isn't easy. It's annoying but they're not technically wrong, just inflexible maybe. If I was the manager I'd offer you a credit (but not £80) to show goodwill.

daemonologie · 17/01/2023 14:23

£65 full head of highlights and it's the hairdresser 2.5 hours. Not London.

Nanny0gg · 17/01/2023 14:31

Those sorts of offers are mad.

Regulars would have gone anyway for the normal price and most new customers go for the offers. You don't get many new regulars from these.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/01/2023 14:31

Somewhere in a far-flung county, there is an am-dram company missing its resident wannabe scriptwriter.

Or Chris Chibnall is on MN.

MrPickles73 · 17/01/2023 14:58

OMG every 7 weeks you spend £160 on your hair! Wowzer! Is this normal now?

MrPickles73 · 17/01/2023 15:00

I am with you givemushypeasachance I get mine cut twice a year for about £60 a pop and dye it using stuff from Boots. I resent the 4 hours spent in the hairdressers wasting time and loss of salary! I can't imagine spending half a day every 2 months!!

ReneBumsWombats · 17/01/2023 15:10

OP can spend her money however she likes.

Agreed! I don’t understand these comments at all. I don’t pay for hair removal, botox, nails, tattoos, designer clothes etc but lots of people do and that’s up to them.

You have a woefully defective imagination then.

ohbreaklongs · 17/01/2023 15:16

I only get a full head of highlights every year and
when I go I normally get a t section and alternate between that and half a head every 7 weeks
Getting my hair done is a little treat to myself and I work as cabin crew so need to look groomed every day unfortunately

She’d lose my custom and I’d tell anyone who needed their hair done to avoid the place like the plague.

how petty to refuse a loyal customer a discount because of when they booked the appt rather than when the offer is running.

longtompot · 17/01/2023 15:19

Usually if I have bought something and then received a discount afterwards which could have been used with the item, I'll contact the company and just ask. Usually they take it off that order, no problem.
I would suggest contacting the hairdressers and just explain what had happened and how, as a long term customer, you hoped they'd have honoured the offer for you too. Depending on their answer would depend on if I would go back there again.

Can’t see this having much effect as OP’s friend (presumably they have mutual friends) had a good experience to offset the bad review.

btw OP, what has your friend said about this?

gamerchick · 17/01/2023 15:21

Technically they're not wrong. Realistically it will grate going back to them. So you have a choice to suck it up or go elsewhere in future.

MourningTea · 17/01/2023 15:25

If she had it the same day and got the reduced price Yanbu also it says in January. If you went after the offer went up it should count.
I wouldn't go back and would post a negative review on their Facebook tbh saying they lost my custom.

Patineur · 17/01/2023 15:28

It could be worth an email referring to this incident and asking if it was a mistake - given that you would have thought they might value their established customers more than this suggests. With any luck they'll take the hint and offer you the discount.

Habreathmint · 17/01/2023 15:33

I would have said something. I'd also never return and tell her why!
