ohbreaklongs · 17/01/2023 11:04

Me and my friend both go to the same hair salon and both get full head of highlights and a cut which now costs £160
Last Monday morning I booked an appointment for yesterday (the following Monday )
The afternoon they put a offer on fb /Instagram 50% off colour in January -book now.
So my friend booked in for yesterday too (Monday )
Got to the till hers came to £80 and she charged me £160
I asked why I didn't get the 50% off colour and she said I had booked my appointment 2 hours before they put the social media post out there for the 50% off colours
Aibu to think that's unfair ?
I go there every 7 weeks and have done for years

Pmsl at that "avail of the discount" convo 🤣🤣🙈

OP don't say any of that, you'll look a right dick.

I'd tell them how unhappy you are at the situation and see what they say. If they don't give you the discount then I'd cancel any upcoming appointments and find a new salon. There's nothing nice about spending thousands of pounds somewhere that doesn't value you as a customer.

daemonologie · 17/01/2023 12:10

It's a royal scan all round. I only pay £65 for full head blond highlights. What is she doing with your bathing it in whale sperm?!

If it def was only two hours before it would have been a nice gesture for her to allow you to have it. Anyhoo. You're getting ripped off generally

itswednesdayy · 17/01/2023 12:10

Exactly, the point of the discount was to drum up additional appointments in January. It doesn’t mean they HAVE to offer the discount to people who were already booked in for January before the offer went live. They’ve chosen to give the discount to new bookings, not to every booking.

ultimately you’re not in the wrong to be disappointed but I think your salon sounds like it’s struggling and couldn’t afford to give you the discount lol. It may not even be open by the time of your next appointment…

I'd baffle her with a bit of conversation:

You - So you're saying that I can't avail of the discount? If I had cancelled my booking and rebooked for the same date & time, but just after the offer was publicised, you're saying that I could have the discount, right?
Her - Well, yes
You - So how do you know that I didn't do that. Are you now saying that I didn't do that? Where is your proof that I didn't cancel my appointment and remake it for the same date and time but just after the offer was posted?
Her - Eh...emmmm.....what?
You - After seeing the offer, I cancelled my booking for X date at Y time and I remade the booking for the same date and time. Give me the discount or you lose a regular customer and I'll be contacting Trading Standards about your offer and I'll be letting all of my friends and colleagues know not to book or use your services. There is no "Start Time" specified on your offer, only an implied "End Time" (when January turns into February).
Her - <silence>

You'd baffle her indeed, with your silly lie. Obviously she can see the booking record.

Even if you went with the whole "start time"/"end time" thing (which I imagine you must think is a very clever loophole), sorry but Trading Standards also use common sense in making objective interpretations. The ad is hardly impliedly deceptive.

Customers who want to argue word salads on a technicality always make me laugh. If you've lost out on a good deal, rather than actually been ripped off, just go patronise another business. But this isn't even a technicality, just a stupid lie.

Agreed it was dumb of the business not to make an exception though. They've lost a regular customer. I think the cashier felt put on the spot and dug her heels in, as she'd already input the price. I've found it's a good idea to mention and confirm discounts you're expecting before the cashier inputs the price or before you make your order.

Forestwalks · 17/01/2023 11:30

That would annoy me even if they were in the right. You don’t treat a loyal customer like that.
The 2 hours thing is just petty.
I would not be returning and would take my custom elsewhere.

Agreed.

StubbleAndSqueak · 17/01/2023 12:12

Why would you do that@LookItsMeAgain ? That's really silly and wouldn't confuse anyone it would piss me right off though
I think they are foolish but technically they've done nothing wrong

itswednesdayy · 17/01/2023 12:13

Most hair salons use similar booking systems, there’s an electronic record of appointments booked, rescheduled and cancelled. Just the the NHS, DWP etc. it’s not that hard to see whether you are lying about rebooking the appointment or not.

it all get booked into a diary with limited daily space, so there needs to be a record of who is booked in and when, and an appointment can only be booked in when there’s availability. Cancellations therefore are recorded to ensure the diary shows as available.

AbsoluteYawns · 17/01/2023 12:16

Wow. I would never go back and tell them why!

Twanky · 17/01/2023 12:18

Steviebrown · 17/01/2023 11:26

It's January. You should get the discount. She'd lose my custom.

At £160 a time she would lose my custom anyway or is that the going rate?

When I book a hotel room I book at the higher, cancel anytime rate then if the room's still available the day before I'm staying I book again at the lower non-refundable rate then cancel the original one!

Somewhere in a far-flung county, there is an am-dram company missing its resident wannabe scriptwriter.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/01/2023 12:19

I’d be very annoyed and certainly not give them any more business. Very short sighted of them. Lots of hairdressers around.

theworldhas · 17/01/2023 12:21

They would have been smart to offer you the same discount given that you turned up together. That said, the fact that you missed it by just two hours is neither here nor there really. Promotions by their nature means that there always people who just miss out. I’d probably just put it down as one of those things, and if the service is otherwise high quality and friendly etc then just forget about it.

theworldhas · 17/01/2023 12:24

I do agree that the company’s problem here though wasn’t having a cut off date - it was having a stupid/ill thought out one

PatchworkElmer · 17/01/2023 12:24

I’d be annoyed too if I was a regular customer. Time to try another salon?

COPPER3 · 17/01/2023 12:26

Gosh!! Imo and as a s/e therapist, she should have offered this to you as a loyal, trustworthy customer. I would have!

Tattyoldted · 17/01/2023 12:27

I wouldn’t be going back there.

Where do you live, 2005? That's exceptionally cheap for a full head pretty much anywhere in the country. I'm in the Midlands and going rate is around £100 for full head highlights (not including cut and blow-dry), more for balayage or babylights.

Eleganz · 17/01/2023 12:29

I'd be looking for another hairdresser - you do not own them your future business.

NoseyNellie · 17/01/2023 11:16

Sucks but technically they’re right. The offer is to drum up business and they already had yours. That said, they’re idiots not to honour it for a regular/good customer. If this was me I would have phoned them as soon as the offer went up and asked if it applied to my appt - or at least have asked at reception before the treatment. That way if they said ‘no you booked before the offer’ I would say ok, I’ll cancel and rebook for another date in January and they would have (hopefully) seen that they were being petty.

Was the manager/owner there when you went in - If not I think an email to them calmly pointing out that you would have cancelled and rebooked if you had known your appt wasn’t included in the offer, plus that you are a regular and loyal client would be worth a punt and if they agree to fix from there all good. If not, sod them. Legally they’re right but they’re being dicks about it

I was going to type almost exactly this, but you’ve saved me the bother.

Beautiful3 · 17/01/2023 12:34

Those are for new clients. I've enquired before and it didn't apply to me, because I was already a customer.

GotAnyGrapez · 17/01/2023 12:35

I wouldn't return and would find a new hairdresser. £160 is daylight robbery?

No, only if the ad states so, which this ad didn't. OP's friend who received the discount was a regular client. More of when the appointment was made.

I'd probably be glad to lose a customer like this.
