Me and my friend both go to the same hair salon and both get full head of highlights and a cut which now costs £160
Last Monday morning I booked an appointment for yesterday (the following Monday )
The afternoon they put a offer on fb /Instagram 50% off colour in January -book now.
So my friend booked in for yesterday too (Monday )
Got to the till hers came to £80 and she charged me £160
I asked why I didn't get the 50% off colour and she said I had booked my appointment 2 hours before they put the social media post out there for the 50% off colours
Aibu to think that's unfair ?
I go there every 7 weeks and have done for years

Am I the only one frankly boggling at spending £160 on a cut and colour, every seven weeks so seven times a year. That's £1,120 on your hair over the year.

I am admittedly low maintenance and have short hair - I had it cut at a barbers for £18 at the weekend, do that about 4-5 times a year. And dye it vibrant colours at home with a £5 box dye or some bleach and henna or bleach and semi permanent colour, less than £10 for sure, a couple of times a year. Definitely less than £160 over a year.

Do most people send closer to £160 or £1,120 annually on their hair?

Some people have jobs where they have to be very well groomed or have darker hair that can't be tamed with 2 box dyes a year.
Others can afford £160 every 7 weeks or get joy from it. Others might spend the equivalent on a gym membership, clothes, jewellery or eating out which is all personal Choice.

Daddydog · 17/01/2023 13:24

That's the annoying thing with social media (or not being on it). Businesses put offers on there to make you follow them. You see a deal, get the deal and then show off your look on insta and maybe tag the salon and they get more followers and new business. Meanwhile those who phone up and book your regular appointment as a long standing customers from day one, who don't need to follow on social media get diddled. If the salon owner cared they could have asked you to follow their page and if you agreed to tag a photo with your new look, you could have been given the discount! Everyone gets what they wanted! A bit shortsighted of them!

Dutchesss · 17/01/2023 13:25

YANBU
Well technically you could have cancelled your appointment and rebooked it but I'm guessing you didn't realise you would need to be that petty.
I wouldn't go again. Businesses have lost my custom for much less.

You booked before the offer! Therefore you don't get the offer!

I agree
Where do they draw the line?
2 hours/days etc?
If you booked before the offer you shouldn’t expect to get it.

Posts like these are so tiresome. a) OP said that she is there every seven weeks, not that she spends £160 every time, and b) newsflash, different people have different budgets and different priorities.

It wouldn't of felt as bad if it was a "new customer offer only " but both regulars ,both booked same day ,same stylist ,same hair service
It has stung a bit

I’d inform them they’d lost my custom. What a shame.

givemushypeasachance · 17/01/2023 13:30

@unclebuck people can spend their money on whatever they like! I find it strange people spend so much money on having a takeaway every week, or on designer shoes, and expect many people would 'boggle' that I pay out for pet insurance on three rescue cats and more on food, vets, etc for them each month, or why I own over a dozen pairs of running trainers.

As someone who doesn't like getting haircuts and is cheap-minded, even when I went to actual hairdressers I picked the cheap end of the spectrum. And now I've used barbers for the last half dozen years I've lost all perspective on what an average women's haircut might cost. So I genuinely don't know and am interested if the majority of people are closer to £160 a year or £1,120 a year - wondering how much of an outlier am I. Over a thousand pounds a year on hair just sounds like a lot, but maybe a not insignificant minority of people do pay that much idk.

Tamarindtree · 17/01/2023 13:31

They are correct because you booked before the offer was promoted. Upon seeing that offer you should have contacted them and asked if you can benefit from the offer as you are a long standing customer and it was only a couple of hours before the offer was made.

Bu turning up you must have realised there was a strong chance they wouldn’t honour the promotion. Your friend is irrelevant in all of this.

Blossomtoes · 17/01/2023 13:32

This is like paying full price for a dress and being pissed off because it’s reduced in the sale. Yes, it’s annoying but it’s just one of those things.

Some people spend their money on different things. That’s it.

silverbubbles · 17/01/2023 13:34

Book now for your next appointment and ask them to honour the discount for you

CanStopWillStop · 17/01/2023 13:34

I had a similar issue, I booked in regularly for colour with my old salon and once I left it a month longer than usual to get the roots done. The salon owner told me at the till that it will be an extra £40 for additional regrowth. My hair grows about 1cm a month....

I paid without comment but never returned after that. I used to give them hundreds of pounds a year and they lost my custom, not just over a cheeky £40, but the deceptive nature (why not mention it at booking or during that they will ask for more money over 1cm regrowth). Stupid really...

It’s entirely up to them where the line is, but if you have a regular customer who is probably one of the highest individual spenders with you, you don’t draw the line at a couple of hours to make £80 thereby losing £1,000 a year plus. Terrible business sense. They are taking OPs custom for granted and now they lose out.

corcaithecat · 17/01/2023 13:38

Beautiful3 · 17/01/2023 12:34

Those are for new clients. I've enquired before and it didn't apply to me, because I was already a customer.

Really? Unless their advert specifically stated it applied to new clients only, they’re misrepresenting the offer. You should have complained more vociferously.

TrashyPanda · 17/01/2023 13:43

that would be my last visit there.

No, it’s like going to the till and being asked to pay full price because you picked up exactly the same dress but from a different rail.

The OP and her friend both had their hair colour done on the same day.

I’d have offered to pay 50% and tell them why that was all I was paying.

Unfortunately, some hairdressers have no business sense. (Ex hairdresser here!)

drpet49 · 17/01/2023 13:45

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 17/01/2023 11:18

If you’d booked it the day before the offer fair enough, but two hours, yes as a regular customer id be pissed off with that too.

I agree. I would take my business elsewhere now.

Puppers · 17/01/2023 13:47

The technicalities of the advert are neither here nor there. It's 100% about the customer experience, and in this case OP has left the salon feeling extremely unhappy. It's short sighted and poor business management. It costs an awful lot more to attract a new loyal customer than it does to retain an existing one. They've been very silly to risk losing a long-standing client over what is really only a few quid to them.

As a consumer I'd feel quite indignant about this. It would leave a very sour taste and I'd not be spending £1000+ every year with a business that clearly doesn't value my custom.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/01/2023 13:55

Hairdresser is very petty. I guess she lost you as a customer? She would if it was me. Very unfair.

itswednesdayy · 17/01/2023 13:56

I wanted to add that I wouldn’t leave my hairdresser over this. I would be happy to pay the cost I agreed to when I booked the appointment in.

good hairdressers are like gold dust, and if this person gives you phenomenal results then stick with them. I don’t think hair colouring is something you can go to just anyone for. My hairdresser moved to a different city this year so I’m looking for a new local hairdresser. I had a colour consultation today, and the new hairdresser didn’t really understand what I wanted, and gave me a quote that was about £40 more expensive than my previous premium central London hairdresser. I’m not paying them more for a worse job. Having a hair dresser that gets exactly what you want is crucial.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 17/01/2023 13:56

I think I'd stay with them but preface every single call to book for the next year with 'Are there any offers you intend to post on social media today which I should be aware of?'

1FootInTheRave · 17/01/2023 13:56

I'd be looking for another hairdresser asap.

Getamoveon36 · 17/01/2023 13:57

You booked before the offer went out. Not eligible for it.

StubbleAndSqueak · 17/01/2023 13:59

I'd put money on this post turning up on Loose Women

amusedbush · 17/01/2023 14:00

daemonologie · 17/01/2023 12:10

It's a royal scan all round. I only pay £65 for full head blond highlights. What is she doing with your bathing it in whale sperm?!

If it def was only two hours before it would have been a nice gesture for her to allow you to have it. Anyhoo. You're getting ripped off generally

That's incredibly cheap - even tiny independent salons around here charge more.

My (city centre) hairdresser charges £50 for a cut and style and £165 for a full head of highlights, cut and style. I go three times a year for the latter and I'm in the chair for 3.5 hours, so it's not that unreasonable for his time, expertise and products.
