Me and my friend both go to the same hair salon and both get full head of highlights and a cut which now costs £160
Last Monday morning I booked an appointment for yesterday (the following Monday )
The afternoon they put a offer on fb /Instagram 50% off colour in January -book now.
So my friend booked in for yesterday too (Monday )
Got to the till hers came to £80 and she charged me £160
I asked why I didn't get the 50% off colour and she said I had booked my appointment 2 hours before they put the social media post out there for the 50% off colours
Aibu to think that's unfair ?
I go there every 7 weeks and have done for years

I wouldn't go back on principle to be honest haha, as a long term and returning customer its horrible that they're saying you missed out by 2 hours and not honouring it, especially of the wording of the advert says for colours in Jan. That said you wouldn't get anywhere by taking it further I doubt, phone to be taken off the books and say why- I suspect they'll offer you something then as they're evidently struggling to fill apps if they're running such a discount.

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/01/2023 12:41

She was being rigid and inflexible and it may have lost them a loyal customer. I think most people in that situation would be a bit flexible and would have offered you the discount. They would see it as a way to retain business with a regular customer (a gain rather then a loss).

But maybe the owner of the salon is rigid and inflexible and your hairdresser didn’t feel like they could be flexible without fear of the owner reacting badly.

Either way, I’d be looking for a salon where my loyalty would be valued.

GotAnyGrapez · 17/01/2023 12:35

I wouldn't return and would find a new hairdresser. £160 is daylight robbery?

Not really for a full head of highlights, cut, and blow-dry. You'd be in the chair for 2.5-3hrs.

WhenDovesFly · 17/01/2023 12:46

I'm sure the salon owner didn't just suddenly think "I know, I'll post on Insta with a 50% off offer for the rest of the month". They will surely have been planning this for a little while (more than a couple of hours), so the fact that they didn't say anything when you called up - with you being a VERY regular customer - that they were about to launch an offer, is incredibly mean and short-sighted. Unless they're amazing I'd seriously consider whether I wanted to go back there.

Flapjackquack · 17/01/2023 12:48

No idea of the legalities but very short sighted business wise. It would leave a bad taste in my mouth and I wouldn’t be going back. I wouldn’t leave any reviews or tell them, just vote with your feet.

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/01/2023 12:48

@WhenDovesFly that’s a very good point.

givemushypeasachance · 17/01/2023 12:49

Am I the only one frankly boggling at spending £160 on a cut and colour, every seven weeks so seven times a year. That's £1,120 on your hair over the year.

I am admittedly low maintenance and have short hair - I had it cut at a barbers for £18 at the weekend, do that about 4-5 times a year. And dye it vibrant colours at home with a £5 box dye or some bleach and henna or bleach and semi permanent colour, less than £10 for sure, a couple of times a year. Definitely less than £160 over a year.

Do most people send closer to £160 or £1,120 annually on their hair?

ThanksItHasPockets · 17/01/2023 12:49

Are you sure your friend was charged as little as £80?

Usually the deal is half-price colour with a full-price cut and finish, not 50% off the full bill.

littlelid · 17/01/2023 12:50

Oof I can see why that stings and its short sighted of them not to agree to honour it for you but I can see technically they are right. YANBU and I'd go somewhere else

I'm sure some people do but I don't think it's the norm. OP says that she goes every 7 weeks, not that she has a full colour and cut every 7 weeks. She is probably there every 7 weeks for a cut and has the colour less frequently.

Flapjackquack · 17/01/2023 12:53

@givemushypeasachance - a simple trim and blow dry will set you back £65+ where I live (SE but not London) at your normal chain salon with a mid level stylist.

Blufelt · 17/01/2023 12:53

I’ve never known anyone write down the time at which a customer booked! An offer is usually on at a certain time, bookings between those times get the offer. It’s not based on when you book but on when you attend. I would have been furious and would never go back.

I also have short hair. Bleached it myself in lockdown and was hours when salons could reopen having it corrected again!

My salon has 50% off colours on Sundays, apart from December. As I’m a regular, my hairdresser didn’t charge me for the toner when I had my December appointment.

SpeckledlyHen · 17/01/2023 12:56

My (old) regular salon lost me as a customer over something as petty and silly. I went religiously every 6 weeks and had full colour/cut which was in the region of £130. During covid the team members were furloughed and had a reduced salary, however, the salon owner didn't and did claim a wage for about 8mths I think. Because of this I tipped them all very generously post covid to help them out a bit.

I was never late, I never cancelled and recommended loads of people to go there. They put an offer in for 50% off a straightening treatment (normally £250) which I had literally booked that morning. It was not something I had done regularly and had ummmmed and ahhhed about it for months due to the cost which they knew about. As soon as I saw the offer on FB I phoned and said would I be eligible and they said no, I booked it before the offer went out. There was no discussion or meeting me half way. I cancelled the treatment and never went back to the salon.

The behaviour is so incredibly short sighted.

mondaytosunday · 17/01/2023 12:59

Very poor customer service not to honour it especially if you are a loyal customer. I'd complain to the manager.

you’re on one extreme end of the scale. Most women don’t have short enough hair that barbers can service, and most women don’t have vibrant hair (I’m assuming you mean pink, blue etc). Therefore you’re probably cheaper than average. It’s easier to get an even blue shade at home than it is for an even blonde colour (not to mention the damage). The blue shade can probably be whacked on and cover up any orangey bits.

I’m on the other extreme of the scale and more expensive than average. I get a combination of root tints, highlights, money pieces, hair cut/blow dry & extensions and spend more than OP on my hair. As an example, my maintenance appointments would be every 10-12 weeks and would include hair extensions moved up, root tint, money piece, toner and hair cut.

Appleblum · 17/01/2023 13:09

Vote with your feet, I wouldn't go back.

Iamwhatiam52 · 17/01/2023 13:10

As you were a regular customer I would also have expected the 50% off deal. That's quite unfair of them.

I'd not be able to stomach that; I'd be finding myself a new hairdresser!

WetBandits · 17/01/2023 13:11

My hairdresser put an offer up a couple of hours after I’d booked an appointment the last time I went. I didn’t complain or question her as she is an excellent hairdresser and the offer didn’t exist when I booked 🤷🏼‍♀️ sod’s law and life isn’t always ‘fair’. However, she did do a cut and style when I’d only booked and prepaid for a full head of highlights because she was excited to cut my hair.

Alexandernevermind · 17/01/2023 13:14

Sorry, but I don't think they were wrong, not technically anyway. You booked on the basis of paying the full price and their offer seemed to be for bookings from the time of the advert onwards, presumably to fill the appointments diary if January is a quiet month. The silly thing is, you could have seen the offer, cancelled and then rebooked and be given the reduction. In hindsight you should have checked back to make sure you would get the discount.

people spend their money on different things, what a shock!
My hair costs me approx £1500 a year, it's my whole thing. I have 1 £15 handbag and the only shoes I own are 3 pairs of trainers and a pair of sliders - all under £50. Am I 'boggling' at others nice leather boots? Fancy bags. No, I just think they spend differently to me. Stop being so judgemental, most women don't want to go to a barbers and I wouldn't touch a box dye if you paid me! That doesn't mean I judge you, it just means I have different taste.

PeekAtYou · 17/01/2023 13:17

I wonder if they would have accepted you cancelling then rebooking for the same day in order to get the 50% off?
Yanbu to be disappointed that they didn't use discretion to keep a regular customer.

Viviennemary · 17/01/2023 13:17

She should be reported to trading standards if the offer was for January. I wouldn't set foot in the place again. You booked the same day. In hindsight you should have canc-elled and rebooked. But you didn't know you wee going to be ripped off.

Mommabear20 · 17/01/2023 13:21

You booked before the offer! Therefore you don't get the offer!
