Next door neighbour wagging his rope about

I'm honestly going demnted and can't decide if I just need to suck it up because of the length of time, or if I should say something and nip it in the bud now.

Next door are detached from eachother but share a path each down the side of our gardens, each a gate width wide. Next door is into fitness and has installed one of them big whopping heavy ropes on their side, so about 1.5m max from our wall. He's wagging it about making a constant banging noise when he's using it. When we came home and first heard it I honestly thought someone was upstairs in our house going hell for leather in our bed! (Luckily DH was with me or I'd probably have ran up all guns blazing). Anyway he was at it twice yesterday latest being 7pm and he's at it again already today. I'm aware this is only the 3rd time, but the noise is so loud and repetitive it's already driving me up the wall!! Do I say something? Or am I being unreasonable?

@Shouldisayorshouldino how far away is your nearest bit of park with a tree? Would be far less antisocial to take it out into some communal space to do this & a FANTASTIC workout to trot there with his 40kg rope coiled over his shoulder as a warm up!

Perhaps you could gently suggest that this would be a better venue that ricocheting the sound through your walls while your little one tries to nap?

Record it on your phone… then when it happens again knock their door and say can you hear that dreadful sound? Do you know where it can be coming from, …
when they say ‘oh it’s Dave on his ropes!’
say OMGoodness I thought it was an Earth quake or something as it sounds horrendous in our house and woke my baby up. … I don’t suppose Dave could adjust it could he so the ropes don’t hit the floor?

Or just knock on the door and speak to them like a mature adult.

That’s always good as long as the person is also mature. Some people would deliberately do it even more just to be petty.

Yes they would, but the OP has not indicated that this is her situation.
Going round being sarcastic is more likely to create animosity.

T1Dmama · 23/01/2023 09:59

I wasn’t suggesting sarcasm

OMGoodness I thought it was an Earth quake or something sounds pretty sarcastic to me.

T1Dmama · 23/01/2023 12:59

LOL. Well if that’s how you’ve read it then obviously that must be how it was intended… 🙄
Although I think I know if I’d meant it that way… I did type it after all

No, I'm saying it sounds like you were being sarcastic to me.
You are now correcting me by saying you going round to knock on someone's door to tell them you thought there was an earthquake is not you being sarcastic; that you want to convey that you really think it is an earthquake.

So I went to put something in the bin yesterday while rope wagging neighbour was just about to start up his 3rd session of the day. He jumped straight into telling me how much hard work it was wagging his ropes, how he's been at it 3 times a day since he got them and he had his first day off yesterday. I was like yes "Mr waggy rope" I know how often you've been at it becuase it's really loud. Anyway he just carried on explaining how much hard work it is and how he's off to the gym for a sauna after to chill. Why not just do the rope wagging at the gym?! I can only assume he just doesn't want to share with others at the gym. Anyway their house is about to go on the market so I've chosen to just let it go since he's not really catching on and I don't want to make it a thing before they move. Just hoping they are sold and done before summer comes and I want my bifolds open.

Fingers crossed for you that their house sells quickly.
I feel very lucky to have lovely neighbours, I hope your next neighbours are quiet x
