Next door neighbour wagging his rope about

Shouldisayorshouldino · 16/01/2023 15:26

I'm honestly going demnted and can't decide if I just need to suck it up because of the length of time, or if I should say something and nip it in the bud now.

Next door are detached from eachother but share a path each down the side of our gardens, each a gate width wide. Next door is into fitness and has installed one of them big whopping heavy ropes on their side, so about 1.5m max from our wall. He's wagging it about making a constant banging noise when he's using it. When we came home and first heard it I honestly thought someone was upstairs in our house going hell for leather in our bed! (Luckily DH was with me or I'd probably have ran up all guns blazing). Anyway he was at it twice yesterday latest being 7pm and he's at it again already today. I'm aware this is only the 3rd time, but the noise is so loud and repetitive it's already driving me up the wall!! Do I say something? Or am I being unreasonable?

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was a euphemism. I’m quite disappointed…

THIS! I only came here to find out what ‘wagging his rope’ meant, only to discover it means exactly that

MissWings · 16/01/2023 16:27

What time is it? I guess if it’s at a reasonable time and only for 30 minutes youll have to suck it up. Not talking about the rope by the way.

MissWings · 16/01/2023 16:31

Oh sorry I AM talking about the rope 😂

UsingChangeofName · 16/01/2023 16:34

I'm amongst probably the overwhelming majority those who came to see exactly what he was up to ! Grin

I think, if you get on, then it is worth going and having a chat and asking him if he can move it somewhere else. Say that you realise he won't be aware just how loud and disturbing it is and that you know he wouldn't be doing it if he realised............ making out what a nice chap he is and clearly the only reasonable thing to do would be to move it.

If you don't say anything then he will never know.
However, if he chooses not to, I don't think there is much to be done. It is relatively short lengths of time, during hours people would reasonably expect to be awake. I mean, it will give him no legs to stand on about noise complaints once you get your dc a drum kit in a few years time.

Warspite · 16/01/2023 16:37

There are foam inter locking mats about 18”to 2ft square to be had at B&Q.
We used them on the awning floor of our caravan.
They're black but nursery schools have multi coloured ones to soften floors against falls by little ones. I expect you’ve seen them?
It might help if he bought some of those & laid them out on the path?
Frankly, I’d have to say something. Maybe start with his partner? Throw in a hint about baby being unable to nap when he’s doing it.
You have my sympathy.

TheOrigRights · 16/01/2023 16:37

If they're using them properly then they can't do it for long - that's the whole point. Usually they're used in short bursts as part of a workout. Smacking them down on the ground does indeed make a horrid noise.
They would be less intrusive than a basket ball and hoop being played for hours, or the squeak of a trampoline. In all cases it would be nice if people were courteous and mindful of their neighbours.
Do you think knowing that it was going to be used for 1 mins intervals over the course of 30 mins once a day would make it more tolerable?
For me personally, if I know noise disruption is going to stop at a certain time it really helps me not go round and punch them accept it.

TheOrigRights · 16/01/2023 16:38

Oh and you should try it - it's great for core and upper body strength!

beenwhereyouare · 16/01/2023 16:40

From the title I thought your neighbor was a nudist or a flasher. 🙄😆😆😆

LookItsMeAgain · 16/01/2023 16:43

If it's one of those fitness ropes, they are really heavy and they would make quite a lot of noise in comparison to say a standard skipping rope hitting off the ground.
Is the rope (at the end he doesn't hold on to) connected to your property at all or is it connected to his? If it's not connected to a party wall at all or fence that you share, I think all you could ask for is for the rope to be moved indoors or get a mat to absorb some of the noise. It might not be possible to get a mat under the rope as that might affect how the rope works when training with it.

You could always play cowboy music and shout giddiup at him when he does it like.

This is brilliant

Me too. I was expecting full frontal nudity. Gutted.

UsingChangeofName · 16/01/2023 17:13

I can't see mats helping.
When I went to the gym, they had a rope like this on the mats and it made a heck of a racket - quite annoying even in the gym to my ears (though I totally accept that is a reasonable place to be using one Grin )

MyDogStoodOnABee · 16/01/2023 17:13

Unless he’s He-man I doubt it’s for very long, have you had a go? It’s a killer, certainly not a sustainable activity for minutes, let alone hours of noise torture!
Have you thought about joining an Amateur Dramatics group?

I guess at least that would be quieter!

Chasingsquirrels · 16/01/2023 17:30

I have no idea what these are, but it's new, you get on with him & isn't causing you a disturbance - just go and talk to him.

Damnit now I’ve got that scene from the Blues Brothers and “Rawhide” going round and round in my head.

Haha SO tempted to stick my head over the fence and shout yeehaa!

For those saying its only short bursts, you are right, I mentioned earlier its interval training. But he managed it for a 45 min session at 3ish and he's at it again. Unless he's got others coming round for a waggle of his rope....I'm not a curtain twitcher so who knows!

OP, you HAVE TO DO THIS! Grin

Honestly, (some) silly silly men and their macho sports accessories. I'd not even heard of these things, googled, had a laugh at the muscly men whipping their ropes all over the shop... (ok, I know women do this daft fitness fad too.)

Any reason why he can't have the ropes anchored in his actual garden where the grass (?) would dampen the sound, rather than choosing to do it in a literal echo chamber? Or perhaps you need a hard, resonant surface to slap your ropes manfully against, rather than something that absorbs the energy.

untilgertie · 17/01/2023 12:59

He won't be able to keep it up for long. YABU.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/01/2023 13:00

Oh, the thread title was literal.

tommika · 17/01/2023 13:29

I can only apologise due to taking the entertainment value as opposed to you’re having to listen to the slapping noise

Could you play some dramatic music and provide feedback on his technique and range of exercises?

On a more helpful note, a chat might see if he can vary the specific exercises or hit the ropes on something else?
