To wonder why Spurs are playing so poorly??

Have been following them for a good few years now, as most of my family and friends are Spurs supporters, and then properly started supporting them myself.

They’ve got excellent world-class players (including recent World Cup winners, like Lloris and Romero), and they’re mostly always in the top 10 clubs in the Premier League.

They never actually seem to win anything though! They’re clearly a very good team, but they’re not a great team. I was following the Spurs-Arsenal game today, and while it’s true that Arsenal are untouchable at the moment and streets ahead of any other teams, it was gutting to see how Spurs were doing (I did feel awful for Lloris after his own goal).

What’s the issue? Is it an issue with their managers or is it the players? I’m sure it’s quite complex, with lots of factors at play, but it’s so frustrating as a fan, isn’t it.

Well I'm a Gooner so pretty happy about that right now Grin

EileenAdler · 16/01/2023 09:37

Son and Kane are overrated in my opinion.

araiwa · 16/01/2023 09:38

Lads, it's Tottenham...

Pretty much sums them up

Nimbostratus100 · 16/01/2023 09:38

I also wish I knew 😥I love Harry Kane -He is a great player. when are we going to see him lift a trophy?

EileenAdler · 16/01/2023 09:39

I'm an Arsenal fan ( from that part of London ) so made me smile.

🤣 in all seriousness, enjoy it, @rainbowandglitter - you should be rightfully proud! You guys absolutely owned it against Spurs yesterday.

Me too @Nimbostratus100! Also love Hugo Lloris and really want him to get a trophy before he retires 😬

When he leaves sours

OneTC · 16/01/2023 09:49

Bottling it is in their nature.

If they had to beat a school team to lift a trophy they'd still fuck it up

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/01/2023 10:01

This is all part and parcel of being a spurs fan. Not winning stuff is what we do. I’m afraid you might just have to learn to live with it. 😂

Probably by going 3-0 up against the schools team and then losing 3-4.

I’m a lifelong Arsenal fan, generational in my family, but I can see the problems at Spurs.

it’s all about planning off the pitch and vision on the pitch. Arsenal have both in both categories - Tottenham don’t.

Spurs should in theory be flying. 8 months ago this fixture against Arsenal was played and they won 3-0. kulusevski, Son Heung Min, and Harry Kane all looked great in attack. The football club was going places.

The problem I think has been a serious amount of indecision from the head coach who is not working well with the board. He is a moany sort anyway but you get the feeling he wants more signings. He also chops and changes the team continuously - witness this fixture, where Ryan Sessegnon’s pace is preferred over the experience and tactical nous of Perisic. You also have an experienced goalkeeper who is clearly struggling in form, hugely, and demonstrated before the World Cup, yet he starts him and lo and behold he makes a mistake.

Spurs quite simply don’t know their best first XI or their preferred pattern of play. Son Heung Min is a hell of a talent, a proven goal scorer. This season he looks lost. Bryan Gil showed his worth in the last game but isn’t consistently played properly. The defence switches from a back 3 to a back 5 to a back 4, no one knows their tactical positions properly.

Meanwhile at Arsenal, it’s a settled lineup, A back 5 that you can name with your eyes closed every game, a settled midfield, a quiet and res

SavoirFlair · 16/01/2023 10:05

*respected leader in Odegaard, and a forward line that rarely changes until the 60th minute.

Arsenal have a plan. Spurs feel lost.

Zebedee55 · 16/01/2023 10:06

As a Spurs fan for 60 years, I despair...😩

GemJewels · 16/01/2023 10:07

You clearly don't know their history if you think they've never won anything op ( it's ok, a common misconception )
I don't know why they're playing so poorly these last couple of seasons. I think a change of manager is needed.
They performed well under Pochettino, yet poorly under Mourinho and not too badly under Conte.
They always seem to hit a mental block when up against Arsenal away, to the point where it's become an expectation with the fans.
Look at it this way op, at least you're supporting a club with history rather than a sugar daddy club, so win or lose, do or dare, if you're a lifelong supporter of them like my DH then at least you're loyal rather than a plastic fan.
Come on you spurs.

GemJewels · 16/01/2023 10:09

@SavoirFlair I agree. ( Agreeing with an Arsenal fan 😲 🙂 )

All any of them do is fall over a cheat

Sorry!! I meant they never seem to win anything, but I know they have won stuff before ❤️ Come on you Spurs! And you’ve put it perfectly - for a couple of years I was a (very fickle) Chelsea supporter, mainly because I thought they sounded like a glamorous team (🤣) but I much prefer supporting Spurs, as like you say, there’s lots of history to get behind and they’ve got heart.

An uncommitted manager in Conté

Aging keeper in Lloris, who has never been convincing

Sluggishness first half of every game, which they got away with for the first three months of the season but their luck then ran out

And specifically yesterday, playing a two man midfield and then the five at the back not getting remotely tight on Saka and Nketiah. I felt so sorry for Sarr who ran his socks off but had no chance.

Lifelong LFC fan and season ticket holder here.

I think you’re bang on the money, @SavoirFlair. I couldn’t get my head around it until I saw your post, and read a couple of articles about yesterday’s match, but I now think it’s really an issue with their managers (which is such a shame!) I’m sure it’s a complex issue, but I feel sad that there’s so much insane talent among the players, and managers often seem to waste it, as you say in your post.

This is a bit of a bonkers pipe dream, but I’m hoping when Hugo Lloris retired (although equally don’t want him to go lol) that he can come back as the Spurs manager. Or that they can get someone like Dider Deschamps to whip them into shape (again an even more unlikely dream 🤣)

I was quite surprised yesterday, my DH, DS and brother came back from the game yesterday, DS said the result was better than he predicted, he thought they would loose 4-0. At the moment, it seems to be one good match, one bad, but as they are playing Man City on Thursday, I just don’t know. I agree on paper, they should be winning more trophies, but DH says that’s the fun of supporting Spurs.

SavoirFlair · 16/01/2023 10:33

Weirdly I think they should do a manager swop with Chelsea.

Graham Potter would be perfect for Spurs. He’s on borrowed time at Chelsea because every coach is (even Champions League winners are summarily sacked.

Keep him at Spurs min three years, let him have the run of the whole place and get his team to work on recruitment etc, and he will put in place a pattern of play and an identity that could really do things.)

Lloris could never be coach, he looks like he’s going to retire and start a men’s clothing boutique on the Cote d’Azure. or write a collection of children’s poetry.

But yeah I think Spurs have recently tried to chase “trophies” by hiring trophy winning coaches (Mourinho, Conte) but not giving them the recruitment infrastructure, budget and time they need.

Maybe Spurs can never be that club - no money due to stadium debt, and perhaps no right to think trophies are round the corner.

Hard work, a five year plan, the right recruitment; and anything can happen.

I love your post so much 🤣🤣 it’s all so true!! Have you considered putting your hat in the ring to be Spurs coach? Sounds like you know them better than they know themselves!
