To wonder why Spurs are playing so poorly??

Have been following them for a good few years now, as most of my family and friends are Spurs supporters, and then properly started supporting them myself.

They’ve got excellent world-class players (including recent World Cup winners, like Lloris and Romero), and they’re mostly always in the top 10 clubs in the Premier League.

They never actually seem to win anything though! They’re clearly a very good team, but they’re not a great team. I was following the Spurs-Arsenal game today, and while it’s true that Arsenal are untouchable at the moment and streets ahead of any other teams, it was gutting to see how Spurs were doing (I did feel awful for Lloris after his own goal).

What’s the issue? Is it an issue with their managers or is it the players? I’m sure it’s quite complex, with lots of factors at play, but it’s so frustrating as a fan, isn’t it.

You clearly don't know their history if you think they've never won anything op ( it's ok, a common misconception )
I don't know why they're playing so poorly these last couple of seasons. I think a change of manager is needed.
They performed well under Pochettino, yet poorly under Mourinho and not too badly under Conte.
They always seem to hit a mental block when up against Arsenal away, to the point where it's become an expectation with the fans.
Look at it this way op, at least you're supporting a club with history rather than a sugar daddy club, so win or lose, do or dare, if you're a lifelong supporter of them like my DH then at least you're loyal rather than a plastic fan.
Come on you spurs.

Your penultimate paragraph is a strange one.
Just because a club now has rich owners doesn't mean all the fans are plastic.
I certainly didn't start supporting City in 1986 for "the money and the glory" and there are thousands like me. Supported them when we literally didn't have a pot to piss in whilst other 'big' teams were buying expensive player we could only dream of.
Every dog has its day and all that

Well I'm a Gooner so pretty happy about that right now Grin

Same. 😀

Yes, for a club to have glory hunter fans (I'm looking at you Chelsea and Man City) there has to be some glory! 😂

Qwertyfudge · 16/01/2023 13:49

Isn’t it just that “Tottenham get battered, everywhere they go” even at home?

DashboardConfessional · 16/01/2023 13:56

I was also going to post about the 2016 third in a two-horse race scenario! Grasping defeat from the jaws of victory is known as "Doing a Spurs" in our house.

I hope Arsenal do win the league. As long as it's not City I don't care who wins it.

DashboardConfessional · 16/01/2023 13:59

Unfortunately for Spurs they never seem to have that magic pulling-together for the manager moment like Aguero's goal in 2012, us winning the Champions League in 2005, and what's happening at Newcastle now.

Son and Kane are overrated in my opinion.

Son is a wonderful player and a manager’s dream. As a Liverpool fan he’s the one non Liverpool player in the Premier League that I’d have picked to join us given the choice.

Kane is a great finisher, but not as great when it comes to team play (in other words he can be a bit greedy).

And that proves my point! Plastics follow winning teams and change their "team" once they fall away. From Citys perspective the hard core fanbase supported their local team.
We are still allowed to support them even though they now do have glory without the tag of plastic.
I honestly thought that term was used by 15 year olds on Twitter 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 16/01/2023 15:07

@minions ouch! touchy much? It's a joke. At Spurs' expense. I support a (different) team that hasn't had any glory for 60 years so it's not a problem we have!

I'm not sure where I said you are not "allowed to support" your team but OK, strop off like a 15 year old 😂

DialSquare · 16/01/2023 12:28

Look up Spursy OP. I can them the Frank Spencer of Football as they always seem to mess it up. But I'm another Arsenal fan so probably not objective!

Hahaha that is a perfect comparison @DialSquare 🤣

I’m not sure Xhaka is any better than Richarlison…

The whole Spurs never win everything is such a boring trope and not true. But if we worked on that basis, everyone would support the same few teams. As I tell my 5 year old, it isn’t just about winning.

I don’t find Spurs enjoyable to watch at the moment, but in the past when they were arguably less successful they were more enjoyable to watch.

Aeroflot21 · 16/01/2023 22:04

What’s the deal with Richarlison? Just curious as a few posters have mentioned him now, and I’m pretty oblivious as I only focus on my favourite players 🤣

You bought him for £60m from Everton, where he was an average player

Gave him a 5 year deal I think

Confused

Well if it was a joke I must have read it wrong.
Its something I read too many times a day on Twitter and it just bores me to tears now. I had 25 years of shite, I deserve good times 👀
Anyway back to calling Spurs Spursy

He refused to shake Martinelli's hand at a corner while warming up. Didn't shake hands with other players. Accused them of diving irony overload. Couldn't deal with Ramsdale at the end and shoved his hand in his face.

A bit of a shit, to be frank...

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2023 07:53

@minionsrule yes you did read it wrong. I was joking that any Spurs glory hunters have gone to the wrong club if all they want is glory. They’ll have a long wait.

You know 95% of fans have decades and decades of “shite” don’t you? Usually with no glory at the end? Spurs included though theirs has been a very rarefied, privileged, premier league shite compared to most. Man City fans are not unique in that respect though you’d think they were! My club hasn’t had a sniff of glory for 6 decades (though I am VERY happy where they are now) and are unlikely to ever hit Man City heights. Still we all carry on hoping. And as you know, it’s the hope that kills you.

Murdoch1949 · 17/01/2023 09:04

You've obviously not been a Tottenham fan for long. They are known as being Spursey. Continually snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. Having incredible wins, with fantastic goals then losing to a bottom 3 side. There is no rhyme nor reason to it, you've just got to suck it up. Bring back Poch.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2023 09:21

I watched Spurs a lot at WHL in the 90s. My exH is a spurs fan and we were members and went to most midweek matches (he worked weekends so I got to watch my team too!). They were certainly Spursy back then. Had some wonderful times there (in the days of Ginola, Sheringham and the rest). Also seen them unexpectedly get turned over by West Brom or such other strugglers. No way of knowing which spurs would turn up. Still have a soft spot for them though.

I was aware of the ‘Spursy’ tendency, but selfishly, would love to see them lift a trophy imminently!! I’m honoured to call myself a Spurs fan though - come on you Spurs!

This is all part and parcel of being a spurs fan. Not winning stuff is what we do. I’m afraid you might just have to learn to live with it. 😂

This. Although at least they're not bottom of the league...yet....

Hmmmm.... have you just started supporting them? 47 years now and the only trophy I can recall is the Continental Cup and I can't even remember when it was it was so long ago....
