To wonder why Spurs are playing so poorly??

Have been following them for a good few years now, as most of my family and friends are Spurs supporters, and then properly started supporting them myself.

They’ve got excellent world-class players (including recent World Cup winners, like Lloris and Romero), and they’re mostly always in the top 10 clubs in the Premier League.

They never actually seem to win anything though! They’re clearly a very good team, but they’re not a great team. I was following the Spurs-Arsenal game today, and while it’s true that Arsenal are untouchable at the moment and streets ahead of any other teams, it was gutting to see how Spurs were doing (I did feel awful for Lloris after his own goal).

What’s the issue? Is it an issue with their managers or is it the players? I’m sure it’s quite complex, with lots of factors at play, but it’s so frustrating as a fan, isn’t it.

No@CurlyTop1980 we are (West Ham) 😥

it's interesting reading all these - I love football and talking about all the news and to the fans of different clubs. I CANNOT do this with my dh or ds - well especially not about Spurs or Arsenal 😂

KylieKangaroo · 17/01/2023 12:04

Worthington Cup in the 90s was the last trophy I remember with the winner from Neilsen!

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2023 12:13

@Ravageur I'm a Wolves fan (sorry, not sorry about Saturday!) living in a very Hammers-y area. From what I saw at the weekend it's not going in the right direction at West Ham

Ravageur · 17/01/2023 12:27

@BitOutOfPractice It's not great unfortunately. Story of our club for years now apart from a fleeting few months last season. Watching Liverpool stuff Wolves tonight might cheer me up 😂

As a Liverpool fan I'm not massively hopeful you will be watching this...

"Gone all Tottenham on it" is another way of saying Spursy

Lads, it's Tottenham...

Pretty much sums them up

This 👆

"Lads, it's Spurs" has been a saying for at least 30 years amongst the people I go to football with.

Watch the Spurs documentary on Amazon Prime, it's ripe for analysis

girlfriend44 · 17/01/2023 13:25

lots of teams performances go up and down its not just Spurs.

Look at Man United, now doing really well again.

Christ, the top bantz on this thread… my sides…

Kane selfish? He's one of the best passers of the ball in the league and his assists record is nearly as good as his scoring record. If anything he's underrated.

Son is terrible this season though and I can't explain that. We've also got a lot of key injuries (although most starting to return now) which is exposing our rather thin squad.

The only reason I can think of for the poor performances, other than the chronically bad investment decisions by the board over many years, is the loss of Gian Piero Ventrone, the fitness coach, a couple of months ago. He wasn't well known outside the club, but his sudden death knocked everyone at the club for six, especially Conte, but also the players.

I'd still rather be a Tottenham fan than cheering for Thomas Partey every week. Jesus.

Good recommendation, thank you! I actually started watching it on and off a couple of weeks back, and it is very insightful.

We have Liverpool, Spurs and one Arsenal fan in our household. You can imagine who is the most smug at the moment!

HazelBite · 17/01/2023 14:33

I am a Spurs fan, DH an Arsenal fan, we have been happily married for 45 years, we watched the match on Sunday, I got over it but I have to because I make him come to matches with me at Tottenham😆
He has to put up with me singing and shouting during the matches but has to concede that the stadium is far superior than the Emirates!

Cherry60 · 17/01/2023 14:34

Sad isn't it? I think the current issue goes back to losing the Champions league final and the sacking of Pochettino - they should have supported him and built on what he had created. Conte isn't working out and we had the nonsense of Kane's failed transfer bid and Nuno's 5 minutes in charge. 🙄

Spurs getting to the CL final was massively lucky though. I don't think much was to do with Poch's tactics. Away goals rule got them through both quarters and semis. I was in Madrid and it was a damp squib of a final really, I've had the privilege of being at four CL finals and that was the only one we (LFC) won and it didn't feel like it was a massive achievement given the opposition and how quickly the penalty was conceded. On the plus side I didn't have to shield my kids from teargas...

Same, absolutely no chance. We'll lose 2-0.

Kerri9 · 17/01/2023 15:14

Hugo Lloris! One of many that isn’t good enough right now

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2023 15:17

After being married to a Spurs fan, my current DP is an Arsenal fan. I've told him if he smirks one more time I'll throttle him.

Yes they had luck, many teams do. The consensus at the time was that they played really watchable football with a great team ethic which Poch had inspired. That's all gone.

They made a big mistake in sacking Poch, things were shaky but he should have been given time and resources to rebuild. Contrast with the treatment of Arteta.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 17/01/2023 17:36

They've got a very average midfield. You can have (usually) great attackers and a couple of other good players in the more fringe positions but there's times if you can't dictate/control the game you can't win. I think Liverpool's recent demise is the same.

I feel for Kane though, I don't follow a Premiership team but I think he could well win the unwanted title of best player (and he is one of the best right now) to never win anything if he's not careful. Whilst many make fun of Stevie G for never winning the league he won plenty of cups including the CL.

This really for me. He is an excellent passer of the ball, but you get the impression he is no longer happy playing the out and out striker role.

They need to look at a new more physical and aggressive CF, with Kane playing close too/slightly behind for me.

LlynTegid · 17/01/2023 17:49

@Aeroflot21 you'd love Hugo Lloris to win a trophy. Lifting the World Cup in 2018, are you sure it wasn't his double?

AyeCarrumba · 17/01/2023 17:57

I wonder why the selfish fucking Spurs fans park in the bloody hospital car park on match days! Just fuck the fuck off! I need to park
there to get in to see my sick elderly parent. You are the MOST supremely selfish bunch of wankers and I hope you lose all yer games! 🤬😤🤬😤🤬😤🤬😤🤬😤🤬😤

@LlynTegid ha I know he won the World Cup, but I meant with Spurs - would be good if he could enjoy an equivalent sort of victory with them! 😁 But agree with others that he hasn’t been playing at his best atm - although I still think he’s great.
