To wonder why Spurs are playing so poorly??

Have been following them for a good few years now, as most of my family and friends are Spurs supporters, and then properly started supporting them myself.

They’ve got excellent world-class players (including recent World Cup winners, like Lloris and Romero), and they’re mostly always in the top 10 clubs in the Premier League.

They never actually seem to win anything though! They’re clearly a very good team, but they’re not a great team. I was following the Spurs-Arsenal game today, and while it’s true that Arsenal are untouchable at the moment and streets ahead of any other teams, it was gutting to see how Spurs were doing (I did feel awful for Lloris after his own goal).

What’s the issue? Is it an issue with their managers or is it the players? I’m sure it’s quite complex, with lots of factors at play, but it’s so frustrating as a fan, isn’t it.

There's a sports board

BitOutOfPractice · 16/01/2023 11:00

'Twas ever thus at Spurs I think. Inconsistent, never knew which team would turn up, and dare I say it, a few key players far too comfortable!

araiwa · 16/01/2023 11:03

The season Leicester won the league and spurs managed to come third in a two horse race was peak spurs

Saddogmum73 · 16/01/2023 11:04

Your team is not playing as a team and I don’t believe Conte is either committed or know how to change his tactics when teams are running rings around him. He’s constantly moaning and I think this transfers to the attitudes of the players.

I am a lifelong Arsenal fan so for me the game was great to watch but I would agree with others, Arteta knows what he wants, has a plan and is executing on that plan. He doesn’t tolerate spoilt brats and has the respect of the team, not sure you could say the same as Conte.

GoingtotheWinchester · 16/01/2023 11:09

<waves hello to all the fellow Arsenal fans on the thread> 😄

Sorry OP, it’s our turn in the sun 😄

Basically, the main problem is that we bring in excellent managers and then don't let them spend any bloody money or invest in long-term improvement plans. Mauricio Pochettino did an incredible job in getting the players to perform as a team, one that was greater than the sum of its parts and could do way more on the pitch than you'd expect on paper - but he couldn't work miracles. It was pretty clear that he knew he could fill our trophy cabinet with just a little more investment in the squad, but he wasn't allowed to do that.

Lloris is a long way past his best and he needs to go. He's not an inspiring captain for the team any more and his performances for us and for France have not been great. He's already announced his 'retirement' from international football which strongly suggests he was aware that France were likely to drop him.

The other problem is that a lot of the big trophy-chasing managers are absolutely not suited to Spurs in their style of play. Spurs have always been a team that specialises in attractive, attacking, risky football. Most Spurs fans would rather see us win 3-2 than 1-0 any day of the week, and it never works for the club when we get saddled with managers like Mourinho who want us to plod around defending a 1-0 lead like we're Chelsea or something.

TBF Spurs have dominated Arsenal in results over the past 7-8 years.

2015 was the last time Arsenal finished above Spurs in the Premier League and they haven't played in the Champions League since 17-18 ?

This season Arsenal are really good. They play at an intense speed, press super hard and play the ball aggressively.

Normally Arsenal have a good few months before Xmas and then fade because the squad isn't up to it. Feel this season thought they have finally got the legs to go the distance. Are they better than Man City ? Not sure, but the points total they now have means a very decent chance of winning.

As for Spurs, well Kane and Son clearly aren't singing the way they were.

Kane is a great player, so much more than a classic centre forward. His ability to hold up but also pass the ball is incredible and this part of his play is often ignored because he is not scoring. I think Spurs need to get an out an out centre forward and play with Kane behind him. That to me would be a winning combination.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/01/2023 12:00

I dont know. The players don't seem like they know what they're doing half the time..kind of like Chelsea atm and its frustrating because there's classy players but playing as individuals...
Though Chelsea have been more annoying lol...

GemJewels · 16/01/2023 12:09

@Aeroflot21 all I have to add now, because @SavoirFlair has summed it up perfectly, is I swear my neighbours thought my DH was raging at me with the amount of shouting and swearing that was coming from his cave yesterday.
When they're playing my team ( not a UK club ) they must think we're having a two hour punch up 😂
A little light-hearted story now. Back in 2010, spurs and arsenal were playing, in this particular match, spurs hadn't beaten them for 17 years.
I told my DH that spurs would beat them 3-2 to buoy him up ( he was pacing like a caged tiger prior to kick off ) he told me I was crackers, wouldn't happen etc, but if they did he'd buy me anything I wanted.
They won 3-2 and I'm still sporting a very nice but expensive wrist watch today due to my prediction 👍
Come on you spurs.

OoooohMatron · 16/01/2023 12:10

Dunno but I wish they were better as I have a pissed off DH and DS.

GemJewels · 16/01/2023 12:10

Spurs hadn't beaten them in that particular play off in 17 years away, I mean.

DialSquare · 16/01/2023 12:28

Look up Spursy OP. I can them the Frank Spencer of Football as they always seem to mess it up. But I'm another Arsenal fan so probably not objective!

DialSquare · 16/01/2023 12:28

can = call

FairyLightAddict · 16/01/2023 12:31

As a gooner, I'm delighted that are so shit 😉

minionsrule · 16/01/2023 12:35

Don't panic, Spurs play Man City this Thursday and they can play like dog shit in every other match but will miraculously pull something off against City..... I think its the law.
Son will definitely turn into Maradona for that one match 😢

Lovemydoggiesomuch · 16/01/2023 12:36

As the Mum of two Arsenal fans I am enjoying this much deserved break from footy counselling and hiding when an Arsenal match on 😊

MadisonAvenue · 16/01/2023 12:37

araiwa · 16/01/2023 09:38

Lads, it's Tottenham...

Pretty much sums them up

I was going to post that too 😂

Twilightstarbright · 16/01/2023 12:45

Spurs season ticket holder here. Some PP have posted some good insights into why, and it’s complex. Pretty unfortunate some of our best players have lost form/injured and our owners don’t spend like some of our rivals.

Gooners- you played great yesterday (and this season) but what goes around comes around. I was very gracious at the end of last season to my gooner mates (we live in N London and it’s a real mix) and they have been the same so far today.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 16/01/2023 12:47

EileenAdler · 16/01/2023 09:37

Son and Kane are overrated in my opinion.

Very overrated indeed.

10HailMarys · 16/01/2023 12:50

Look at it this way op, at least you're supporting a club with history rather than a sugar daddy club, so win or lose, do or dare, if you're a lifelong supporter of them like my DH then at least you're loyal rather than a plastic fan.
Come on you spurs.

Absolutely this. My grandad started supporting Spurs in 1919 and my dad's first time at White Hart Lane was in 1948. My family's been with them through 'those glory glory days' and we've been with them in their worst times, and we'll be with them always.

As the great Bill Nicholson once said: “It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs set our sights very high, so that even failure will have in it an echo of glory.”

Lost123454 · 16/01/2023 12:52

Other than winning the Audi Cup, their entire history has been a complete embarrassment

Lost123454 · 16/01/2023 12:54

He's one of your own supposedly LOL

Tessasanderson · 16/01/2023 12:58

Conte is a terrible manager. He can win things but only when he has EVERYTHING to his advantage like when he was in Italy or when he came to Chelsea and inherited and absolutely amazing team. It is no surprise that he falls out with everyone once things get tough.

Spurs got 4th last season by a miracle of Man Utd self destructing and Arsenals young team capitulating. The fact that spurs used about 14 players in regular rotation for the last 1/3rd of the season meant he ground those players into the dirt. They then have a season with a world cup thrown in. Zero imagination in management and in tactics. Hardly any rotation again and even when they were getting results it was turgid, horrible football.

The players dont like it. The fans dont like it and the club has gone from one horrible manager (Jose) to another in Conte. Spurs played yesterday with a debutant CM in Sarr plus the over rated Hojberg against 3 Arsenal midfielders. Sometimes they overloaded with 4. At Chelski they had Kante, he is superhuman and could do that job against overloaded midfields. There arent many others who can and certainly not a young lad and a water carrier.

GemJewels · 16/01/2023 13:00

@Lost123454 apart from winning two league titles, eight F.A cups, four league cups, seven F.A community shields, one European winners cup and two UEFA cups along with being runners up in the 2018-19 UEFA league championship you mean.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 16/01/2023 13:11

It's the Sp*rs way these days. Overhyped at the start of every season with "this is going to be our season", the press wanking over Harry Kane at every opportunity (even though he's the only England captain to the team relegated).

Even before yesterday's game, Sky Sports was all about when Kane would break a meaningless record, barely a mention of Arsenal being top of the league. Notice it's never about when he'll win a trophy.

Buying in expensive managers, particularly grim ones like Mourinho and Conte, but not giving them the oil money that they require to win, is never going to work. Spending huge sums on unpleasant characters like Richarlison isn't going to take you to the top.

It's all part and parcel for them since before the Premiership was founded.
