Putting here for traffic.

what do you drive as a family car?
What do you really love/not love about it and why?

Im looking for a new family car and just not sure what to get. Budget is not fixed massively although it won’t be newer than about 2018.

18mth old VW Tiguan.

Pros, heated seats, heated steering wheel, parks itself, reversing camera, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, huge boot, economical, electric tailgate, panoramic roof, huge boot, high up so good driving position and easy to get in and out.

We had a BMW 220 Active Tourer previously, that was really nice too.

This is my dream car. Sadly I have to make do with a 20 year old 3 door Polo that is so crap it still has wind down windows Grin

🤣 We have a shitty 15yr old polo too but with 5 doors. I hate it compared to the berlingo

Coasterfan · 15/01/2023 14:40

I have Kia Xceed it’s a nice size, the teens are comfortable in the back, I like how it looks, it drives nicely on short journeys and the motorway too and it gets a reasonable MPG. I also like that you don’t see loads of them! I m not hugely fussed on cars though as long as it’s reliable and the kids are comfortable that’s enough!

WithASpider · 15/01/2023 15:00

VW Sharan
Pros:
Tonnes of room for 3 tall teens and a dog.
Massive space with seats down - fit a huge oak dresser in it once!
Rear 2 seats actually do fit adults.
Fun to drive.
Sliding doors.

Cons:
Drinks Diesel.
Parking sensors are ridiculously sensitive.
Takes ages to warm or cool.

LittleDonkeyKong · 15/01/2023 15:01

I drive a 59 plate clio. Top of the range in its day. Full leather interior, built in Sat nav etc. I love her!

pointythings · 15/01/2023 15:03

I drive a Ford Focus Estate. Very useful, as with roof box it can take uni age kids anywhere with all their stuff. It's also an absolute pleasure to drive, great fun to throw around twisty lanes.

1982mommaof4 · 15/01/2023 16:48

Range Rover .. hate it

Lincslady53 · 15/01/2023 17:40

Skoda Octavia, 2nd one we have had. Loads if space in the back, enormous boot, brilliant tech. Our daughter has a Merc C Class and the tech is crap compared to our Skoda. Would recommend to anyone interested in function over badge.

Fluffy40 · 15/01/2023 17:49

VW golf GTE, it feels very safe and the doors weigh a ton!

Fidgety31 · 15/01/2023 17:52

Mitsubishi L200 - it’s massive and that’s why I like it

Ford Mondeo. I laugh my little head off when I see another one as they are all driven by much older men and I am a wee spring chicken in comparison. I've also only seen one woman driving one ever. I'm not sure what possessed me to get something so boring but it does everything I need it to. It's practical, nippy, comfortable and loves a tip run or family holiday. It's not yet needed a repair but when it does it should be cheaper for parts.

If I had the money, or rather could justify the additional cost, I would have got a c or e class estate or an arteon/Tiguan.

I have one too. I used to have one when my boys were little and then replaced it with same again. Current one is 14 years old and almost on its last legs!

WeAllHaveWings · 15/01/2023 18:34

Ford focus estate. Small estate but perfect for our labrador to jump in and out and roomy enough for ds and his friends.

Drives well, 10 years old this year and no problems with it since be bought nearly new. Love the gadgets it came with - inbuilt satnav, front and rear parking sensors, automatic parallel parking is amazing and back privacy window tints.

Drives well but does ideally need winter tyres in snowy/freezing conditions.

What’s the boot like? I have a 38kg golden retriever who needs to travel comfortably!!

Pinkywoo · 15/01/2023 19:09

@KendrickLamaze I have a Mondeo estate and love it! I had a Focus before but it wasn't big enough once DS2 was born.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 15/01/2023 21:13

Audi A4 Avant, big enough for an Ikea trip or a family holiday, enough space in the back for growing teenagers (our last car every trip started with the words "Can you put your seat forward please"), reasonably swift on the open road and comfortable to drive

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/01/2023 21:19

Nissan Quashqai.

I have three grown dc’s and the rare occasions we are all together means I have two over 6’ and one 5’8 in the back!
we sat in lots of this type and the Quashqai had the best leg and headroom.
it is a 2015.
I also like Nissan generally, I have had a few before because they have a reputation for being reliable.
it’s fairly economical and v comfy.
just don’t like the colour- it’s a sort of purply blue 💩

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 15/01/2023 22:29

Ford Fiesta. Love it!

BridieConvert · 15/01/2023 22:43

VW T-Roc
I love it! I'm small and really wanted a Tiguan but when I test drove it, it just felt like I was driving a bus!
The T-Roc is a good compromise for us ☺️

Context: 2.5yo and 4mo and DH

BridieConvert · 15/01/2023 22:44

DH has a Volvo V40 which I struggle to drive 😂

Boot space is good and the 2 car seats fit comfortably in the back.
It's good and easy to drive.
I used to drive a fiesta but when I was pregnant with baby 2 I just wanted something with that little bit more space! And the fact the T-Roc is a small SUG so higher off the ground is easier for putting her toddler in her car seat that the lower down fiesta was.
(Another reason I'm not as big a fan of the v40)

cruisebaba1 · 16/01/2023 19:13

Mercedes A 180 AMG. love it!

monicagellerbing · 05/02/2023 20:42

@Twoshoesnewshoes ooh that's the colour I wanted but couldn't get! Mine is like a burgundy red, swaps?! Wink

Kualma · 05/02/2023 20:44

Jaguar F Pace. I love it! So much boot space and such a comfortable drive.

IForgotOurSong · 05/02/2023 21:04

Skoda Kodiaq, a lot of car for the money, and is large and practical but still reasonably stylish. I do like it but not as much as the VW Tiguan I had when my kids were babies, that was a lush car, I’d love another one.

Airplant · 05/02/2023 21:44

On my 4th Toyota Corolla, would not change it for anything. I drive lots of different cars for work but still like these the best.

Reasons to love it we'll it's the most popular car in the world and all the taxi drivers can't be wrong 😅.

It's a hybrid and automatic, I usually get 60+ mpg for a petrol hybrid. The excel versions seats are super comfy and it has all the tech you could ever want. Super easy to drive and relaxing, even automatic selfparking if I'm feeling lazy, automatically self opening boot, packed with safety features.

Toyota give all their cars 10 years warranty or 100,000 miles, 15 years for the hybrid battery. I have an app that shows me where car is if I forget where I parked it in a car park and locates it if it's stolen.

There is pretty much nothing but don't like about it, I could afford alot more expensive cars but I don't want one.

Toyota's also are one of the most reliable cats on the road.
