Putting here for traffic.

what do you drive as a family car?
What do you really love/not love about it and why?

Im looking for a new family car and just not sure what to get. Budget is not fixed massively although it won’t be newer than about 2018.

I drive a BMW convertible, DP drives a Mercedes C Class. I much prefer mine.

whiteroseredrose · 15/01/2023 11:00

We have a Honda FRV and love it.

It has the option of 3 seats in the front as well as 3 in the back, so seats 6 and still has a big boot.

It is like a tardis as it is small on the outside.

Our last one had done nearly 200,000 miles and was still going strong until some bugger smashed into it.

Unfortunately they stopped making them c.2008 so we had to hunt around for another.

PurBal · 15/01/2023 11:05

Ford Focus (Mk4). Loads of boot space, and loads of leg room in the back so it’s comfortable for 4 adults.
Test drove a VW Golf too but love the Focus.

PanettoneMoly · 15/01/2023 11:21

Volvo XC40. DH was desperate for the XC90 (“because”) but couldn’t really justify the extra expense as we only have 1 DC and don’t need the extra size or space

Oncemoreforluck · 15/01/2023 11:23

Suzuki Swift Allgrip Hybrid.
previous car was the Suzuki Swift 4wd which my DH still drives. His is now really due to be changed, but he loves it so much that he is keeping it until it falls to bits.

Only downside is the size of the boot, but we just fold the back seats flat and use as a 2 seater when we have to.
I can’t think of another car I would swap mine for, as I like small cars, and like to have 4 wheel drive because we are out in the sticks and get snowed in sometimes. Would love the Volvo X60, but it’s just too big for everyday use.

janeeyreair · 15/01/2023 11:24

Old convertible Saab that has a leaking roof that im trying to fix, I was incredibly lucky that it was given to me. It is actually very reliable and has flown through its MOT.

I would love a small 4 x 4 such as a Nissan Juke or Jeep.

senior30 · 15/01/2023 11:24

Range Rover vogue and I hate it with a passion. It’s almost 5 years old and we are haemorrhaging money in repairs, can’t wait to see the back of it! I would advise anybody considering one to steer clear

Kath85 · 15/01/2023 11:35

Audi q5, easy to drive and loads of boot space. Previously I had a qashqai but had a lot of mechanical issues with it so got rid after about a year

Liz1tummypain · 15/01/2023 11:37

I had a Nissan qashquai but the dog couldnt jump in the boot at easily now he's getting old so gone for a Vauxhall Zafira because of the low tailgate - if that's the word. Nice to drive but I work longer days/.hours so hardly take the dog out now so feels a tad too big really..

whoruntheworldgirls · 15/01/2023 11:37

Jaguar F-Pace, great car, very comfortable, lots of boot space

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/01/2023 11:38

Lexus hybrid. 15 years old, most reliable car I’ve ever had.

Lonelycrab · 15/01/2023 11:44

Honda Civic about 10 years old. Very well put together, coming upto 80k and nothing has gone wrong yet (touches wood)

Great boot and space, fun to drive with reasonable mpg. Crap rear visibility the main downside but you get used to that.

waiyuh · 15/01/2023 11:58

Grand scenic. I hate that it doesn't have heated seats. Or a panoramic sunroof, or ANY sunroof because it's called a grand SCENIC but you don't see anything more than you'd see in a normal car. I also think the tiny little cubbys in the floors are pointless, hate that it's only got one USB point and loathe the fact that although it's got seven seats, the ones in the very back would only suit elves as they've so little space if the human sized people in the next row, needing room for their tiresome legs are to sit comfortably at all.

I don't really like the car at all, to be honest. It was a fairly quick purchase after my zafira, which I loved, was totalled by a BMW dickhead texting and driving.

Giggorata · 15/01/2023 11:59

I have a Renault van, which is perfect for going away in, as I am small enough to be able to sleep in it, plus I have a small chest of drawers and general camping needments in it.
It also gets used for carrying 3 dogs in a huge dog cage, getting wood, getting big stuff like piles of bricks or paving, being the luggage carrier when the coven goes away en masse, bicycles, going to the tip and just generally.

The only issue is, only two seats. So I can only legally carry one passenger nowadays. Gone are the days of people and dogs on big floor cushions in the back. I once had a van with rear fold up seats, which was pretty good, if a bit of a faff.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/01/2023 12:05

H drives a Volvo xc60 - I don't drive for all kinds of reasons

Crikeyalmighty · 15/01/2023 12:10

@Happydays321 aren't they just- it's our second xC60 -before that we had a Volvo S40 - and my 24 year old son has a 17 year old S60 for last 5 years, it's been great and still has fantastic bodywork,

RicciardoPerez · 15/01/2023 12:12

Fiesta ST in the bright orange performance edition! Best car I've ever had! Perfect amount of space, easy to park and it's fast!

DH has an Audi Q5. Great car too, but not looking forward to replacing the tyres in the next couple of months... 🫣

zingally · 15/01/2023 12:13

A Ford Focus.

GemJewels · 15/01/2023 12:22

I drive a 1972 VW beetle which is my pride and joy and a 1987 ford XR 3i convertible, my second pride and joy.
DH drives an 15 year old tank of a nissan X trail.
All immaculate and never give a minutes trouble.

Suzuki Swift. I don't have small DC to worry about any more and she's perfect. Nippy - 1L turbo - small so fits into small spaces and very economical, nearly 50 to the gallon even with the short commute I have. We also have a VW Transporter, but it's huge so I don't drive it much.

Jaybird43 · 15/01/2023 12:48

@UsherBobble how did you guess?! 😂

@Pinetreesfall haha! I know! We often get people anchor on the brakes and stare at us as we drive by! We have the blacked out windows as well and I think makes it look extra cool!

NewHopeNow · 15/01/2023 13:22

Hyundai i10. I really like it. I prefer small cars and it's big enough for me and the 2 kids. If we go out as a family we go in dh's bigger car.

garlictwist · 15/01/2023 13:27

Gwdihooooo · 15/01/2023 08:50

Citroen berlingo…. When the kids were small you could get 3 carseats in the back.

Now they’re older we can get 4 bikes on the roof and all the camping kit in the boot.

This is my dream car. Sadly I have to make do with a 20 year old 3 door Polo that is so crap it still has wind down windows Grin
