Putting here for traffic.

what do you drive as a family car?
What do you really love/not love about it and why?

Im looking for a new family car and just not sure what to get. Budget is not fixed massively although it won’t be newer than about 2018.

Land rover disco sport. It’s nicely mid sized and fills that sweet spot between can still fit all the family crap in it but it’s not a stress to parallel park in tight spaces since we don’t have a driveway. Drives pleasantly enough. Wouldn’t get another one though, they’re a magnet for car thieves.

ProserpinaProserpina · 15/01/2023 09:17

A Citroen C3. It’s small and quite old but drives nicely and it’s easy to park. It’s a perfect little runaround.

DH has a massive van so we use that for day trips etc.

MoiraRoseRules · 15/01/2023 09:17

Interested in this! Have an 11 & 14 year olds so need space in the back for them to grow, boot space less of an issue these days. I drive for work so do a lot of miles & motorway driving so I really want something fun & nice to drive.

Currently in a Vauxhall Mokka which is not fun, feels clunky, though to be fair nothing has gone too wrong in five years! Three teens in the back were seriously squished, which made me think an SUV is worth considering but really I’m not keen on a big car. DH has a golf & it’s lovely - might just get the same!

I could probably stretch to a 3yr old bmw 1 / Mercedes / Audi if I stayed with a small car, otherwise I’d look at VW. What thoughts do people have?!

blondieminx · 15/01/2023 09:18

BMW 1 series. I love it, really nippy. Sadly going to have to change it soon for something with better rear legroom as fitting teens in the back isn’t great.

BelenaConhamHarter · 15/01/2023 09:18

Aygo. Cheap, fun to drive, fits in all those car park spaces the SUVs can't get in.

Takes flipping ages for the car windows to de mist though - have to work round it.

TreadLight · 15/01/2023 09:19

MG5 and very happy with it

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 15/01/2023 09:20

I have a Hyundai i10 and DH has a Ford Mondeo.

Mine is a fab little car - cheap to run and insure and has never had a thing wrong with it. I had to replace the battery in October but otherwise it sails through its' MOT's every year.

DH's Ford does more miles but it's been in the garage several times a year since he got it. Never for anything major but it's still a real PITA.

Muddydogpawprints · 15/01/2023 09:20

Skoda superb, so much room it's ridiculous

LactoseTheIntolerant · 15/01/2023 09:21

Volvo xc60 too its great for us. We used to have an xc90 when the kids were younger and the extra seats etc were useful, but now the 60 is a better size for us and more manageable when parking etc.
Things I like - reliable, safe, good size eg back seats are comfy for teenage boys with long legs. I love the little luxuries like a heated stearing wheel.
Things I don't like = I don't think the sat nav is great I still use waze when I need to find somewhere.

Jaybird43 · 15/01/2023 09:21

We have a Volvo v60 and love it. It’s only of years old and it’s got loads if space, lots of mod cons and people think it’s a police car so we often get people move out of the way on the motorway when we drive behind them 😂

Jaybird43 · 15/01/2023 09:22
  • only a couple of years old
uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 15/01/2023 09:22

I was a car delivery driver for a year, delivering up to 5 cars a day so I've driven pretty much every car on the market, old and new.

My absolute favourite was the BMW 530e. So comfortable, smooth, fuel efficient, powerful enough and loads and loads of features.

2nd was the Volvo xc60 and xc90. Way way better than any of the range rovers and land rovers. They had a much better quality to them and have the best safety features.

3rd was a bit random but I loved the Mitsubishi Outlander. It was just perfect for me and I loved the extras on it. It would be an excellent cheaper option if you lived out in the sticks.

cadburyegg · 15/01/2023 09:23

Skoda Karoq. Absolutely love it. Boot space is fab, so is cabin space, it being higher up makes it so much easier to strap ds2 in car. Much more economical in fuel than my previous car was (Vauxhall Astra) much to my surprise! Heated seats, parking sensors, rear camera. The kids love the little trays on the back of the seats 😂

troppibambini6 · 15/01/2023 09:23

BMW X5.
Downside it drinks petrol.
Upsides
Like that it's big, it's fast doesn't feel like you're driving a bus, seven seats and it's comfy to drive.

IwishIwasSupermum · 15/01/2023 09:23

Audi Q3, love it, had something much bigger before, but love this is fairly compact with decent boot feels safe.

Lcb123 · 15/01/2023 09:24

Kia Niro, very fuel efficient (got the hybrid). I’m so uninterested in cars - DH did all the research!

SocialLite · 15/01/2023 09:25

Electric Kona- awesome car, although might go for the near identical Kia e-Niro next time for the bigger boot

nc8975 · 15/01/2023 09:26

Hatchback, current is a Ford Focus but hoping to upgrade to a Mercedes A class this year. Family of 4, no dogs.

We don't need anything bigger than that, so I don't buy anything bigger...don't understand the obsession with SUVs unless you genuinely need a vehicle that size. it really irritates me how big cars have got in the UK, especially when people can't drive or park them (not pointing fingers here, I don't know how you drive!)

Eminybob · 15/01/2023 09:27

I have a vauxhall zafira.

Pros
Roomy
Massive boot
2 extra pop up seats in boot
Built in sat nav
Heated seats

Cons
Guzzles petrol
Visibility is bad, loads of blind spots
Looks like a mum bus

polkadotpixie · 15/01/2023 09:27

I've got a Ford B-Max, it's not very cool but the sliding back doors are ideal for getting kids/car seats out in small spaces

HaveYouSeenNancy · 15/01/2023 09:28

Jaguar xf, I absolutely love driving it as it's so smooth and comfortable. Dh had a land rover discovery last year which was great for space (7 seats) but it had something wrong with it nearly every month so he's just changed it for a Volvo xc90, which is probably the nicest car I've ever driven. I'd definitely recommend Volvo.

QueenofLouisiana · 15/01/2023 09:28

Hyundai i35. Fits large dog in the boot and 6’3” DS in the back if we all need to go out together. The automatic is easy to drive long distances and the fact it is higher makes it suitable for the rural roads around here.
Having said that, DS has a little micra and that is fun to drive. He’s just passed his test and I’ll quite miss driving that home after he’s driven to work.

Sparkletastic · 15/01/2023 09:29

VW Golf. Would never get a different make or model after driving this. It's economical, reliable and deceptively spacious but most importantly really fun to drive.

Grumpybutfunny · 15/01/2023 09:30

5 door Mini classic JCW I love it

freewimbledonwomble · 15/01/2023 09:31

Aston Martin but it isn't really a family car.
