Putting here for traffic.

what do you drive as a family car?
What do you really love/not love about it and why?

Im looking for a new family car and just not sure what to get. Budget is not fixed massively although it won’t be newer than about 2018.

OP posts:
Hesma · 15/01/2023 09:52

Mokka and I love it. Easy to drive, like being high up, goid boot space

Iwantmyoldnameback · 15/01/2023 09:54

Ford grande CMax, great choice of seat configuration and sliding doors and Nissan Note which has amazing rear leg room for its size.

BluIsTheColour · 15/01/2023 09:54

Nissan juke. Don't really like it to drive. It's a nice looking car and the boot is alright size. I really miss my Honda civic. Although I don't miss the bloody length of it, it was difficult to park. The juke is a gd bit smaller much easier to park. It's on lease for 3 yrs so I'm stuck with it for another 2. Will be def getting a big upgrade as now have a lot more disposable income.

I'd recommend the Honda civic! Boot is huge and very roomy inside but also lovely to drive.

SockQueen · 15/01/2023 09:54

Mazda 6. It's big, nice size boot, comfortable to drive. Fuel efficient for long journeys.

Mol1628 · 15/01/2023 09:57

Skoda Kamiq.

Best car I’ve ever had. Just nice and simple to drive and is comfy. Fits in kids and dog but it’s not too big so fine for short journeys when I’m on my own as well.

I don’t like the information/entertainment system though, it’s slow takes ages to load profiles and tells me there’s an update every 5 minutes.

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 10:00

I live in the suburbs of London and do not have a car. Hire one occasionally, have found Fiat 500s to be ideal (except for long hills) and would suit a family with say primary school age children. Also easy for my elderly mum to get in and out of.

Ylvamoon · 15/01/2023 10:03

VW golf - can't beat it. Not to big but still specious enough for a family of 4.
Drives well and not to expensive to maintain we have a service plan £25.-/ month.

Pinetreesfall · 15/01/2023 10:03

Volvo V60 love it.
@Jaybird43 same with ours. It makes me laugh if I'm going spot on 70 and see people fly by and slam on the brakes because they think we're the cops. Especially if DH is driving back from work in a high vis. We have black windows too so you can't see the kids.

Simonjt · 15/01/2023 10:03

Civic type r sport line, like most Honda’s its very big on the inside (including the boot) without being an absolutely massive car. Very comfy, nice drive, easy to park and very reliable. I’ve had civics for years now and I’m yet to have to so more than standard maintenance.

Happydays321 · 15/01/2023 10:04

Another with an xc60, love it. So Comfortable.

E class estate, and before this a 5 series estate. Both are good. Merc has a slightly bigger boot but the 5 series was more fun to drive/handled better. With the back seats down I can fit 3 bikes in whole. The back seats fine for a 6ft2 adult all the way to the Alps. Ran second set of wheels with winter tyres and thus neither car had issues in snow. Both can tow well. Both easy to manoeuvre and park and being an estate the visibility is good out the back without loads of guff trim and body panels that don’t achieve much in terms of function.

Before these I had a little BMW 1 series go kart which I loved to drive and still pretty spacious for a hatchback but I wouldn’t buy a newer one as they are now often specked with underpowered engines and are all front wheel drive, the old pre 2015 ones are better/more fun!

I have a 2008 Nissan Murano. No one's ever heard of them; they didn't sell many in the UK. It's a bit bigger than a BMW X3 and a bit smaller than an X5. It looks like a giant Qashqai. I really like it; it's big, wafty and comfortable which is perfect for the long motorway journeys that we do. It's been extremely reliable, especially considering I only paid about five grand for it. It's almost 15 years old now but it doesn't really show, except in nav/tech which is now a bit dated. I'm keeping it until it dies, or until the government bans ICE cars.

I also have a Peugeot 206 GTI 180 which is a sort of rolling project car. It was in a sorry state when I bought it and I'm slowly doing it up.

Hellsmovie · 15/01/2023 10:20

18yr old for mondeo 2.2 diesel.

Heated windscreen
Heated seats
Cruise control
Comfortable on long trips
50+ mpg on a run

Blankspace35 · 15/01/2023 10:24

Vw passat estate, i love it, its got a huge boot and we can change the floor height to give extra boot space when needed. Really comfortable to drive too

only downside is sometimes the length as it can hang over the edge of smaller parking bays

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/01/2023 10:25

A Ford S-Max. I love it, Fords are super reliable and cheap to run.

Had a Mercedes once, so many problems and so expensive, soon went back to Ford

Dippydinosaurus · 15/01/2023 10:27

Honda Civic it's great quality you can tell the difference in things like the gears and switches from the Hyundai we used to have. Free car tax and mpg is around 60 and up to 80 on a long motorway drive

CoffeandTiaMaria · 15/01/2023 10:32

Ford Focus Active, sunroof, spare wheel, heated seats and windscreen. Lovely lot of room in the back and the boot, easy to drive (front and rear sensors), economical and comfortable.

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/01/2023 10:37

Mazda CX30 something or other. DH loves it, I don’t. We only have one car now and I really miss my Karoq and the Kamiq I had before.

MintyPrincess · 15/01/2023 10:39

A mint green fiesta as per my user name ☺️ its nippy and good to drive.
6 yrs old but heated leather seats, rear parking camera, electric wing mirrors etc.
I love it

sittingonacornflake · 15/01/2023 10:40

Range Roger evoque. It drives nicely, v comfortable, automatic, like that it has an app, like the heated seats and that it's still easy to parallel park as not too big. My 4 year old likes that it shines a light shaped like a Range Rover on the floor when you unlock it in the dark Grin

BUT the quality is dire. At 4 years old the windscreen badly leaked and had to be replaced, the reverse camera packed in and had to be replaced. Parts and tyres are expensive. Albeit I like the fancy servicing garage when I'm there. And I always get a well fancy courtesy car so feel posh for a day Grin

PotteringPondering · 15/01/2023 10:45

Suzuki Vitara.

Suzuki are always near the top of the reliability tables, but cheaper to buy than most of the others.

I recently replaced my earlier Suzuki with a 2019 Vitara with an economical 1.0 engine and 14,000 on the clock. I bought it from a Suzuki dealer, and it was less expensive than I expected (about half the cost of buying new). Roomy and economical, and feels sturdy too.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/01/2023 10:47

Hyundai i10. It's my second one and I absolutely love it.

geminiflanagan · 15/01/2023 10:48

Nissan pulsar. Its fine. Nissan are solid, but this is boring to drive with no go.

UsherBobble · 15/01/2023 10:51

@Jaybird43 Is your car white? 🤣

TheWayOfTheWorld · 15/01/2023 10:52

Volvo XC90 hybrid - love it! Has a lot of oompf and doesn't feel huge but amazing boot space for camping etc; parking is surprisingly easy due to the 360 degree degree cameras.
