To wonder where Margot Robbie's internal organs are.... see Vanity Fair cover

This is not an intention to body shame - but I find the cover shot of Margot Robbie on Vanity Fair quite shocking. And unnecessary 😥
I have been just as thin, and was classed as underweight and diagnosed with an eating disorder.
I hope I'm not the only one who wonders what the next level for stars might be, if this is an aspirational "look". And for us regular humans.

You seem to be the person who has introduced the term ‘normal’ in to the conversation though.
Pacific Islanders have some of the highest rates of obesity and obesity related diseases in the world. I’ve attached information from Wikipedia on the causes. Pacific Islanders traditionally did not carry the level of excess weight they tend to now until new, high calorie foods were introduced to them.
Re Rubenesque - this was at a time when only the wealthy could eat so much that they put on significant amounts of weight. Being larger was seen as desirable as it was seen as a marker of wealth.

I briefly lived in a PI country that's why I've used them as an example of different genetics. They definitely are obese now as they now have been westernised and eat junk food, but it didn't used to be like that, they were naturally like this as a survival thing (ie biggest survive in extreme conditions). Anyway ... my point simply is that everyone is different and normal and healthy can also be different, and what is desirable is highly manufactured. The Sunshine song "Beauty Magazines will only make you feel ugly". Weight isnt the only thing, so is skin colour, so is hair colour. So is teeth colour! So is everything. So many beautiful woman can't see they're beautiful because they've been brainwashed to never think they're good enough and that's why I would never promote being able to see ribs as something to 'aspire' to for anyone. Spoiler alert, magazines are always trying to sell you something 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well healthy is not different. Pacific Islanders for example have huge problems with diabetes, cardio vascular disease and other obesity related conditions, as I am sure you know. That is not healthy.
At the end of the day it’s much better on every level to aspire to be on the slimmer side. Things don’t always have to swing the the extreme. Something like 60% of women in the UK are now classed as obese. That is extremely problematic for those individuals and for society as a whole.

Think the visible ribs are a bit much, but I'd love a stomach like that

A concave stomach? Really?

workiskillingme · 15/01/2023 00:28

I came here for the usual predictable comments and wasn't disappointed
All weight related threads on here are exactly the same . Everyone on MN believes they are fat at a bmi of 17 and anyone over a size 8 needs to lose weight

piedbeauty · 15/01/2023 00:45

She looks beautiful. Amazing stomach and lovely skin.

Of course being obese isn't healthy, good lord 🙄 neither is ribs showing (usually) Surely there's an in-between 😑
I despair at humanity sometimes 😔

OhDeniseReally · 15/01/2023 00:50

I agree OP she is giving off a really inappropriate vibe, yes whilst rational people can se she has been photo shopped and is sucking her stomach in, I don’t think this is the a healthy image at all - and not one we should be showing our daughters
What if your daughter naturally looks like that? Mine does - she has a figure similar to this and she is not underweight. We should be showing our daughters all shapes and sizes of women, and that includes slim women, toned or with visible ribs. Stop excluding naturally slender and slim women. Some women are this shape. As for the OP asking as to where her internal organs are, that is just nasty-you are insinuating that she so thin as to be very unhealthy. I say all this as a size 16-18 woman, but my younger daughter is really small and slender. Takes after her dad's side of the family. The women in his family are all very small and slightly built.

You are very wise, it is my first. The one yesterday was about breastfeeding that turned nasty. Might be time to delete my account and spend time with real people 🙃

Their is nothing unhealthy inherently in seeing people’s ribs

Where you getting that from on this thread?

CosyFanTucci · 15/01/2023 01:17

She looks like she’s a very healthy weight. She’s obviously fit and eats well. For someone with a moderately tall, slim build this is an absolutely normal shape. It’s body-shaming to suggest otherwise.

georgarina · 15/01/2023 01:31

I did not say that she was underweight.
**
That VF cover image makes her look "too thin".

What does that even mean? That is the essence of body shaming.

Would it be acceptable for someone to start a thread on a different actress, and say ‘I didn’t say she was overweight. She just looks too fat.’

Lol nail on the head! Only acceptable when you are telling a slim woman she is too thin, never acceptable the other way around

lljkk · 15/01/2023 02:19

Your ignorance has made you look a bit daft. She’s a very famous Australian actress. Not just a pretty face, a bloody good actress.

Ah well, if only the unkindest thing anyone on MN ever called me was daft. That would be way cool.

I haven't seen anything MR was in, according to her career record on Wikipedia. I'm one of those people who claims to "not watch TV." There were a few items I have heard of, though. I might see them one day. Is there a role where MR is especially good, folk would recommend her acting in that role? The trailor for Babylon didn't appeal (even though I quite like Brad Pitt).

back to insomniac job hunting

Ladyincrimson · 15/01/2023 02:21

She’s just sucking it in. I bet it doesn’t look like that at 7pm after she’s had her dinner, or when it’s her period and she’s bloated 😂

Anon778833 · 15/01/2023 02:32

She looks fab...

GrinAndVomit · 15/01/2023 06:02

BungleandGeorge · 14/01/2023 21:06

Can’t tell from that picture whether she’s healthy or not. However, the question is why vogue have put her in a pose, used contour on her face and asked her to breathe in to make her look as thin as possible? I’m sure a lot of young girls looking at that are not noticing the manipulation…

Yes. This I agree with.
MR is a very healthy weight and there are a multitude of photos they could have used to showcase that.
To choose to have the image that shows her to be as thin as she possibly could appear on the front cover is the worrying aspect.

This.

I am a fit, slim size 6, and I have just tried to achieve this look by posing in the mirror, and I can't. I do not have prominent ribs like that no matter how hard I try, nor how hard I suck my stomach in.

This is a clear attempt to promote extreme thinness as attractive and aspirational.

I genuinely taken aback by how many women on this thread are trying to say that is an image of normal, healthy body - it isn't. Its an unachieveable, manufactured contrivance, and you'd make yourself pretty unwell trying, mentally and physically, trying to emulate it.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/01/2023 10:40

She was on Graham Norton the other day and didn't look that bizarrely skinny - only had some type of crop top on to display her abs, but looked normal. Suspect lighting and/or photoshop in the magazine cover.

Whataretheodds · 15/01/2023 10:41

astronewt · 14/01/2023 19:56

That's just how a fairly slim person looks breathing in. Mine are as prominent if not more when I breathe in, and my BMI is 23.

Yes, but isn't the point that the styling of this photo means the visible ribs are a focal point, and that's not a healthy standard.

That’s a normal, toned waist. Just because you don’t have it, it doesn’t mean it’s something out of the ordinary.
Have you seen Brigitte Bardot’s waist when she was young? Yet, nobody would call her anorexic or sick.

TheKeatingFive · 15/01/2023 10:46

People don't seem to be engaging with the fact that fat is distributed in different ways on different people.

Visible ribs aren't necessarily unusual and aren't unhealthy in themselves. I'm a size 10 with a bmi of 24 or slightly higher and my ribs are visible.
