Does anyone else have no wish to be very "thin"?

My BMI is 21.5 probably a bit porky by MN standards. I've been ill but I feel a bit frail and too thin, my hip bones are jutting , I'm going back to the gym to do weight training I like having big thighs , big bum , feeling strong I'd be happier with a BMI of around 22.5 even 23. Does anyone else feel like me or does everyone want to have a very low BMI? Is being very thin a sign of status? I think once women start to get older it looks very aging.

@ThirtyThreeTrees me too, at my lowest I was 7st 12 with 34 G breasts. Really not a look I was happy with, sadly this pushed me into being more comfortable overweight so this is the year I tackle it mentally and physically.

You might not look or feel healthy at 7 stone 10, but someone with a smaller frame who is the same height would.

A healthy BMI window is around 3 stone. It's not saying every single person will look and feel their best anywhere in the window, but most people will have a healthy weight somewhere in that 3 stone window.

Exactly, that’s the point I’m trying to make. BMI doesn’t take body shape or fitness levels into account and can be triggering for those who struggle with body image and eating issues.

Yarrawonga · 13/01/2023 12:23

I know everyone says, weight comes off their breasts first but mine don't or at least very little.

I’m the same.

Oakbeam · 13/01/2023 12:26

It does, by giving such a wide healthy range.

What's the point of this thread? It appears to be an excuse to bash thin people - status driven, jutting bones, haggard faced, old-looking...

I agree. I'm thin I'm a small size 8. I love sport, especially running, I eat well because I enjoy it, as well as enjoying not so healthily food. It's just my body type. I'm happy. Would you have started this thread about larger people, using negative language op?
I suggest you get on with your own life and not be arsed about others appearance.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 13/01/2023 13:15

@FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb & @Yarrawonga

So glad to hear it's not just me!!!!

It's almost impossible to get bra sizes in under 30 larger cups too.

Sunnytwobridges · 13/01/2023 13:22

I've never wanted to be thin. I"ve always liked big bums, thighs, and toned arms and backs. I prefer the more curvy, pear, hour glass shapes - which I unfortunately don't have but i do have a big bum and thighs but on an apple body sadly. lol

You sound like you have a nice shape at a higher BMI - I'm jealous lol

ThirtyThreeTrees · 13/01/2023 13:22

Overall, I don't think you weight or dress is important, it's about what a person themselves feels.

I also hate the negative takes surrounding weight, whether it's slim or overweight.

My best friend is a size 6. She's not underweight, she's not guant or scraggy losing or any other of those words bandied about. She's within healthy BMI, eats properly, moderate exercise and the amount of shitty comments she gets at times are cruel. She's also stunningly pretty. One of the nicest people you could meet but jealousy in some people is astounding.

malificent7 · 13/01/2023 13:28

I prefer being slim and toned...i feel healthier and more energetic. Im 44 and look it but i prefer that to getting out of breath when i run for a bus.

yorkshirepudsx · 13/01/2023 13:29

This post just seems like it was intended to become a list of why being slim is bad.

In my eyes, size doesn't matter, if you're happy in your own skin, that's great - but if you have to put others down in order to feel good in your own skin, then I'm afraid you're a shitty person

I'm slim, always have been, don't try to be 'slim', but I look healthy & try to stay healthy🤷‍♀️ don't think I look 'scraggy' though 🤣

trythisforsize · 13/01/2023 13:30

I find curves so much more attractive in myself and in other people. A happy medium of being strong, curvy and 'well covered' but without a pot belly so that my jeans don't dig in would be wonderful.
I've put on 2 stone in the last 2 years and I don't mind but my knees are protesting a bit and I can't afford a whole new wardrobe so I need to lose the belly. The boobs, the bum and the thighs can stay!

As has been said previously I think it's losing weight that leads you to feel "scraggy/haggard" not those who are naturally smaller. I went from 12st 13 to 8st 7, I'm 5ft 2 and I looked terrible, I looked ill and my face was sunken. However a friend the same measurements looks amazing, it's always been her size and she doesn't face the same issues I did.

Same here. I have always had a sturdy frame (come from farming stock on DM's side). Used to work with a woman who was really tiny and birdlike and even at 8.5 stone I felt like an elephant beside her!

I think as you get older you need some reserves. Cancer outcomes are worse if BMI is low at time of diagnosis.

This is the only real health related post I can properly see on this thread and I find it interesting so will give it a google.

I can't help wondering if low BMI here is for people isn't the cause of negative outcomes, but rather, people who are thin are (for example) also elderly which is a risk factor, that sort of thing. Does anyone know?

Personally I stay at borderline underweight and fight the urge to lose more constantly. I'd love more of this kind of information which could work out what an actual ideal BMI would be, it would help with the ED tendencies.

Gufo · 13/01/2023 13:53

I lost weight and also have a bmi of 21.5. It's not looking thinner that has pleased me - it's the blood tests showing lower cholesterol, having more stamina for exercise and my heart rate going from 75bpm to the low 60s. I am now working on strength training and don't mind if my bmi increases if I feel stronger (I'm a right weakling).

Leopardprintisaneutral · 13/01/2023 13:56

I have been fat for most of my adult life and though I have a relatively healthy lifestyle and am working on losing weight (again), I have no desire to be skinny. I liked the way I looked at around a 16-18 and would be thrilled to get to that size again and stay there this time. Getting skinny at this age, even if it were possible, would leave me looking haggard with lots of loose skin.

Rebel2023 · 13/01/2023 14:12

@lifter I remember reading something about it but don't ask me where!
I think it's because say you are diagnosed with something that's severe, you lose weight and you're already right on the line, you've no reserve left so you're then having to work at gaining weight as well

It's like if you're underweight and get a vomiting bug, it's more dangerous because you can't really afford to lose any weight

It's actually better to be slightly overweight when you get very old. Things like falls, fractures can kill you , more cushioning helps. If you get an illness you have the fat stores left as reserve. It's not healthy being overweight when younger but becomes more beneficial when you reach a certain age.

No and I have no desire to be fat either.

I know what you mean. Are these people ill because they are very thin, or very thin because they are ill.

pocketvenuss · 13/01/2023 15:18

PAFMO · 13/01/2023 06:23

Nobody I know in real life gives "being thin" a second thought once they're over the age of about 19.
BMI of 21 unless you're 3ft tall is hardly obese.
Is that OK for your article?

BMI doesn't work like that. At 3ft tall a BMI of 21 would be slim just as a BMI of 21 would slim if you were 5'10"

pocketvenuss · 13/01/2023 15:19

FindingMeno · 13/01/2023 06:25

I don't understand the whole 'haggard' face thing.
What does that really mean?
Angular? Wrinkly?

Hollow and not filled out. We lose fat and muscle mass from our faces as we age so some people look haggard. Conversely if you run over wet you can look matronly. Not sure what is better or worse.

pocketvenuss · 13/01/2023 15:20

Hollyhead · 13/01/2023 06:25

I wish I could have a bmi higher than 20 without feeling utterly disgusting. I have to maintain a certain weight to be happy. I’ve tried coping with an extra stone and I can’t bear the way the fat feels on my body. There are upsides as I’ll never be overweight, but it is an unpleasant thing to live with!

What height/size/measurement are you?

Fizbosshoes · 13/01/2023 15:26

pocketvenuss · 13/01/2023 15:18

BMI doesn't work like that. At 3ft tall a BMI of 21 would be slim just as a BMI of 21 would slim if you were 5'10"

I'm really short and my bmi is around 21.4. I don't look thin, I think I look quite chunky. I think someone taller with the same bmi would look slimmer

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 13/01/2023 15:26

I am 70, maybe a stone overweight, easily hidden. My face looks much younger than my body. People guess my age at early 50's. Some friends my age who are thin look ancient, over 80. It really is a choice between your face and your arse when you get older. I like eating - and I like my face.

hamstersarse · 13/01/2023 15:31

I do want to be thin

My BMI is 20-21 and I just feel better when I am thin. I have been BMI 19 before and genuinely felt amazing.

I tend to feel more sluggish if I am any bigger (post pregnancy I was maybe 11 stone?), and I definitely feel more comfortable when there are no rolls of fat or chub rub. Feels like what my optimum body should feel like.
