Does anyone else have no wish to be very "thin"?

My BMI is 21.5 probably a bit porky by MN standards. I've been ill but I feel a bit frail and too thin, my hip bones are jutting , I'm going back to the gym to do weight training I like having big thighs , big bum , feeling strong I'd be happier with a BMI of around 22.5 even 23. Does anyone else feel like me or does everyone want to have a very low BMI? Is being very thin a sign of status? I think once women start to get older it looks very aging.

I was happy with my weight at BMI 26 so technically overweight, but my clothes fit better, I looked good, I felt healthier, was eating healthier and doing plenty of exercise (plus weights in the gym so I always though that the muscle was what tipped me over the BMI thing anyway), I am now in the Obese category, and as much as I don't want to be super thin I would like to get back to a healthier weight. I have borderline high blood pressure now, and it was low to normal when I was weighing a bit less. So obviously my body is meant to be at a 26 on the BMI scale not smaller, when I start to lose muscle and my boobs, bum etc start getting flat instead of curvy.

shewolfsout · 13/01/2023 10:19

I have been very thin on a few occasions, but was really ill at those times. When I've been in the best health BMI has been at 25/26

I very much doubt a BMI of 21.5 is porky by MN standards.

Stealth boast much.

Felix01 · 13/01/2023 10:21

It's not that I'm saying being thin is unhealthy in its self. I like having lean muscle as it helps me at work I feel stronger in myself. I feel shit right now even though I'm thinner, I don't feel at peak performance.

There was just a thread where people were commenting about a BMI of feeling fat with a BMI of 18-19..

I'm a real porker....size 20. Ive always struggled with my weight. I wish I was slimmer yes but not thin. I'd be happy at a size 12/14. I'm 56...at my age its only the extra layer(s) of fat that's keeping the wrinkles away!

Orangebadger · 13/01/2023 10:23

Never wanted to be think no. Happy if I am fit and healthy more than skinny.

Echobelly · 13/01/2023 10:23

I'm a size 10-12 which is apparently considered 'big' now - sure it wasn't when I was a kid. But no interest in being size 6 or 8.

Redblanky · 13/01/2023 10:26

I want to be fit and healthy, which I don't think you can be if much over weight. You'll get away with it for a while but it catches up.

My current BMI is 22 and that's quite slim enough, but my body fat is low. The same BMI without the muscle, I wouldn't be comfortable with.

Does everyone want to be thin? I'm pretty sure most women, if given a magic wish, would choose pronounced hourglass.

I'm naturally very thin and whilst I wish I was a bit bigger overall I certainly don't want to be an hourglass figure. I love feeling athletic, no ED, just always been this way. I hate the way people project.

mintdaisy · 13/01/2023 10:29

The only time I have been thin I was unhealthily obsessed with calorie counting and exercise. I got as low as under 8 stone and got so many compliments. Now I eat what I want, enjoy food and exercise and naturally sit around 9 stone. Am happy and feel healthier mentally and physically.

Cotswoldmama · 13/01/2023 10:33

I've always been thin. My BMI is about 17 I think. Its just how I am. I used to hate it now I just accept it, I'd almost go so far as to say embrace it. I never used to exercise but I started 2 years ago because although I've always been slim I've never been very fit or healthy. Now I feel confident about my body I want to maintain it. I'm nearly 40 now and definitely don't look haggered yet! In fact I usually get mistaken for being at least 10 years younger. I think genetics have more of a say in a haggered face than weight.

But you surely must realise that anyone thinking they’re fat with a bmi of 18, are likely suffering with dysmorphia, eating disorders or other mental illness.

Threads like this make me really uncomfortable and I think mumsnet has a duty to monitor them. We have all heard of the websites/groups that talk like this and encourage others to basically damage their bodies. It’s very frightening and sad.

Eat healthy foods, eat enough, exercise, do weights and you’ll feel great. Above all be honest, if food or thoughts about food, your body, weight etc start taking over, seek help.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/01/2023 10:36

There is a happy medium between being thin and fat - it's called being healthy. No, I don't want to be stick thin, but I also don't want to be chubby.

People with eating disorders and body dysmorphia are probably a) not representative of MN as a whole b) necessarily honest c) a reason to label yourself as being some kind of porker d) mean this is any less insensitive/ rude

Help14235 · 13/01/2023 10:36

I like having a flat stomach and thin legs my i is 17.2 but I hate my bum boobs and arms which are all small , I can’t help it though I really struggle to gain weight i lost some from illness and it will not go back on. I think this post is abit mean towards skinny people. Can you imagine if someone posted how they love being skinny and and think fat people look awful and there fat bodies age them?

Weirdest humble brag. In what thread have you seen MNers say 21.5 is ‘porky’, OP? Hmm

There was a thread yesterday full of comments like that

EmpressOfTheSofa · 13/01/2023 10:40

My BMI is apparently 24.

I’m my ideal weight/shape. Any skinnier and I lose my boobs. I’m a size 10 with hips and a flat stomach, I look great in a bikini and I’m pretty toned.

I’m 5’3 and weigh 9st11.

A friend of mine is an inch smaller and a pound heavier and is a size 16, looks ‘fat’ and hates it. BMI is bollocks, there’s so many other factors.

FelicityFleur · 13/01/2023 10:42

‘Scraggy’
Christ, how judgemental.
Is it also acceptable to call overweight people piggy then?
Or some other negative and harmful term?
I’m guessing since most people on this thread are desperate to say how much better they look at a size 12-14 than they would at a size 8 then no, that would be fat shaming and wrong

Being overweight has a huge impact on your health, are we going to ignore that in favour of a subjectively ‘prettier’ face?
No wonder the NHS is in crisis.

BMI is a blunt tool, it serves very few people effectively, but putting weight on, or telling yourself that it’s better to be heavier, because then you won’t look ‘scraggy’ (or just not have that pillowy bloated look that fillers have brought into fashion rather than cheekbones) is ridiculous

purpledalmation · 13/01/2023 10:43

BMI is 24 and on the high end of normal, but to lose a stone I would look gaunt. Maybe look at 5 lbs off, but it's such a struggle.

What's the point of this thread? It appears to be an excuse to bash thin people - status driven, jutting bones, haggard faced, old-looking...

We shouldn't consider ED and distorted body image as norm.

I agree. My BMI is 19.1, I'm very slim, it's just my body. I couldn't put weight on if I tried. I've learned to accept my size.

If you're healthy, what does your body type/shape matter?

"Thin is very ageing", oh, fuck off.
