What is your bmi if you feel slim?

Just that really! I have been losing weight since September and am down down to a bmi of 26, i.e almost in the healthy range. But I still have a lot of visible body fat. Anyone else have experience of this? Maybe it's more toning I need.

Aibu to post in aibu?

I'm 5'4 with a BMI of 26. Honestly I feel amazing. I went through a long period of not weighing myself but I'm pretty sure this is the smallest I've been since my very early 20s. A couple of years ago my BMI was over 35.

I am still trying to lose - hoping to get to BMI about 24. There's every chance at that weight I'll still have a waist size over 80cm, but I think I'm just going to focus on maintaining when I get there.

I know I'm still overweight, but honestly I feel a bit disheartened whenever I use the NHS tracker and it doesn't say I've done really well! (Obviously that doesn't know my history and I understand that.)

blahblahblah1654 · 28/07/2023 12:09

@ScottishBeth my bmi is also 26. I feel pretty good too. I was 30 at one point. Would like to get down to about 23. Certain body types look ok with a bit of extra weight anyway

notol · 28/07/2023 12:21

The thing is that BMI just isn't reliable and neither are our own perceptions.

A few months ago I had a BMI 18.5 and a waist of 25 inches, I was involved in an accident and couldn't do weightlifting for a few months.

Now I have a BMI of 18 and a waist of 26 inches, I feel "bigger" and overweight even though I'm technically lighter and absolutely not overweight.

Hollyppp · 28/07/2023 16:19

20-21

IveHadItUpToHere · 28/07/2023 16:27

BMI 25 (size 8.10) I look slim and healthy. Any lower and I have people stopping me in the street to tell me I look ill.

WhateverMate · 28/07/2023 16:30

BMI 21 and a size 8 or 10 depending on the shop.

I look slim if I suck my stomach in but at age 54 it's all sort of dropped, and I can't be arsed to tone it up.

KimberleyClark · 28/07/2023 16:35

I feel slim at around 23.5. I’m 5ft 2 but have a medium large frame, broad shoulders and hips. I also carry weight pretty evenly all over.

CoffeeRevelsForever · 28/07/2023 16:54

I feel like I look my best at BMI 26-27. (I don't know if someone on here might tell me it's because I've lost sight of what a healthy weight is though!) When I see photos of myself with a BMI of 25, it just doesn't suit me - my face looks long and drawn. I'm really happy when I can hover in the bottom of the overweight zone and balancing mental health, energy and exercise for my particular body shape I'd say it's where I'm healthiest. I'm an hourglass shape with weight distributed evenly over my body which I think makes a difference.

CoinsinaJar · 28/07/2023 17:02

I weight 9st 1lb, am 5'7" tall and take size 8/10 clothes. My BMI is 19.9 but I genuinely feel I could lose a few more pounds and not look too skinny. I do a lot of exercise, if that's relevant .....

YeahIsaidit · 28/07/2023 17:15

Bmi 19, size 6 feel chunky above about bmi of 21 but I'm a short arse with a small frame

Hbh17 · 28/07/2023 17:18

I don't know how much I weigh, nor my BMI, because happiness in life is not governed by a random set of numbers. What I weigh is irrelevant to my value as a person. OP, give up the slimming and targets, and just enjoy your life!

This sounds a bit silly.

It sounds as though you're saying people who keep an eye on their weight are only doing so because they feel it adds value to them as a person?

Is that what you're saying or have I misunderstood?

I mean, I keep an eye on my teeth and gums too and I get regular check-ups at the Opticians.

Looking after one's body doesn't necessarily prevent enjoyment of life. In fact at 54, I'm hoping the more I look after mine, the longer I might be able to enjoy it.

ManchesterLu · 28/07/2023 17:50

It can take a while for your mind to catch up with your body. EVERYONE has some fat.

I lost a lot of weight a decade ago and ended at BMI 22. I still felt chubby, but looking back now, I was TINY.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 28/07/2023 18:38

There is something really disturbing about the advert algorithm, it is showing me an advert for laxatives on this page when I was reading the posts about disordered eating and very low BMIs.

I wonder if that is something mumsnet could look into as it could be a potentially dangerous trigger for someone reading?

Allhailkingcharlie · 28/07/2023 18:41

I'm 21.3. My bmi that is. But I feel fat. I've put on weight on my bum and my stomach. I feel horrid. But have been used to being a size 8 most of my life and I'm now a 10. Hurtling towards a 12!

Daveismyhero · 28/07/2023 18:42

BMI is a load of rubbish.im 5 foot 2 and Wear a size 6. Im strong and fairly muscled for my size but absolutely not fat. My BMI says I'm overweight...

orangeblosssom · 28/07/2023 18:55

Happiness may not be, but health is. The numbers aren't random either.

IMustntBeLate · 28/07/2023 19:05

I had a belly like Buddha at a bmi of 24.
I feel slim at the bottom of my bmi range because I’m a typical apple shape and any weight I gain makes me look several months pregnant.

It isn’t.
For the average person, ie not someone fairly muscled, it is a good health risk indicator it’s not ever been an indicator of how you look in a bikini.

Oliotya · 28/07/2023 18:58

Happiness may not be, but health is. The numbers aren't random either.

It's possible to be healthy and not know or track your BMI though. Some people mught maintain a very healthy weight and lifestyle without weighing themselves or charting any particular numbers. The numbers (or knowledge of them) aren't always essential. This poster might be incredibly in tune with their own body and able to practise intuitive eating, exercise etc. For some people it's healthier not to know all the numbers; recovery from eating disorders might require someone not to weigh themselves for example. BMI isn't the be all and end all when it comes to health.

Fizbosshoes · 28/07/2023 19:19

Ive had an ED and I'm not sure that I've ever felt particularly happy with my body or bmi
It's now 21 but I'm short so although I'm not obviously overweight, I don't look or feel slim

StamppotAndGravy · 28/07/2023 19:23

I've got a big frame so around 23. At 21 I'm tired all the time, have no bust and you can see all my bones. I'm currently 24.5 and feel a bit tubby.

Curseofthenation · 28/07/2023 19:28

I feel best with a BMI around 21. I have a reasonably broad, muscular build and my boobs are on the larger side, so I think that makes a BMI of 18 or 19 a bit too much for me. I sound really masculine 😆, but I'm only 5'6.

  1. But I prefer Met Life charts - Middle - middle.
