What is your bmi if you feel slim?

Just that really! I have been losing weight since September and am down down to a bmi of 26, i.e almost in the healthy range. But I still have a lot of visible body fat. Anyone else have experience of this? Maybe it's more toning I need.

Aibu to post in aibu?

20-21 at age 55. I've been 5 ft 7 and 9 stone- 9 stone 2 all my adult life except during pregnancy. Any higher and I feel a bit flabby.
However it's not toned like it was 30 years ago! I don't work out, but walk the dog miles and have an active job.

Sorry I meant BM1 5. Size 0. Extremely tall and extremely willowy. 6'7". 20kg weight.

I really should be a top model. They missed their chance.

You may think you are being funny but having been hospitalised with AN, with patients with BMI's below 10, I can assuring you it's not laughing matter.

Are there are actual adults with BMIs of 5?

If there are, I had no idea. Not trying to poke fun at those who're suffering.

Felix01 · 13/01/2023 00:17

My BMI is 21.5 I have a 26 inch waist and flat stomach. I have E cup boobs Any skinnier and face is going to look gaunt even with filler. I prefer to have a bit of weight on and not look old to be honest. I think too skinny looks unhealthy on me I prefer to look strong and curvaceous.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/01/2023 00:21

I sought bmi 5 would be survivable but I've certainly seen patients bmi 8

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/01/2023 00:21

Doubt.

Everyday is a school day. I was going for something I thought was impossible even at BMI of 10.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/01/2023 00:31

It's scary really and I think it defies the science. I probably would have thought the same until I fell victim to the evils of AN. The body compensates in all sorts of ways at such low weight but in reality the patient is very, very sick.

I am 5'6" and when my bmi was 19-21 I felt healthy and was slim and fit. I am 12st now, just lost a stone and my bmi was very high. If I can get back to 20-22 I will be happy.

Jourdain11 · 13/01/2023 00:35

Hah, apparently mine is 14.6 - I had to calculate it as I didn't know. I have light bones though, I reckon. I certainly don't look particularly gaunt or bony.

For context, I was diagnosed with AML in March 2020 and lost ca. 9-10 kilos. I've never been able to put it all back on despite being in remission and healthy now. I'd like to get back to my previous weight (although even then I had a lower than healthy BMI - I just have a very narrow frame) for bone health and feeling the cold less. But I've never managed to gain more than half of the lost weight back, unless I have Ensures twice a day (and eventually I get bored and can't be bothered and then my weight just resets to this same level). I probably should be more concerned, but I'm quite happy with being generally healthy and alive as things stand 😀

On reflection I'm going to ask for my last post to be deleted in case it sends someone struggling to look.

Oh yes I remember Nicki. She was shocking. Had no idea of her actual number though, such a shame.

It really is.

It's amazing how the average UK clothing size is 16, and 2/3rds of population are statistically overweight or obese - but everyone on mumsnet seem to be a size 8 Grin

I think MN associates thinness as Upper MC and aristocratic 🤣🤣🤣.it's aspirational. I know no one in real life who covets to be ridiculously thin , it's all about being strong , big thighs , buttocks.

Siameasy · 13/01/2023 01:38

5’4” personally Ideal weight 9st 8 gives me a BMI of 22.8 but currently I’ve got a few Xmas lbs on so I’m 10st 2 BMI 24. I still look good and feel good but need a little push.
Lowest I’ve been in my 40s was 8.13 and I now realise that much below 9st 5 makes me look like a teenage boy.
I measure my waist (28-30) and go by clothes (8-10 high street size).
Im 47 and I like my body and work hard to stay slim as it’s really important to me and makes me feel amazing.

If the posts on this thread represented the whole of Mumsnet you might have a point, but they don’t.

The thread title is “What is your bmi if you feel slim?”, so it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that mainly slim people have responded.

BigChesterDraws · 12/01/2023 23:26

I normally keep my BMI at 18. After all, no one needs more than a lick of a lettuce leaf once a fortnight.

I once scoffed a MASSIVE salad. I was so huge after that. We’ve definitely lost sight of what a healthy weight and portion size is. Yesterday I had to stop myself eating a whole tomato.

On a thread with many posters speaking somewhat openly and honestly about our own/ our daughters' eating disorders, this attempt at being funny just falls really flat.

I've personally found it more sympathetic and less triggering than most threads on this subject on here, and have felt more able to speak a little about my own history of struggling with food/Ed.

There is no need to take the piss.

It really is a lot deeper than that for me, and I would guess for most people posting here. It's not a hilarious attempt to pretend to be 'aristocratic'. You could try listening rather than mocking.

I've been told I should aspire to have a bigger bum and thighs, or that men find 'curves' sexier. I'm 42 years old, I know perfectly well that men aren't put off by a bit of extra flesh. But that really has fuck all to do with my own feelings about my own body (and that would be true even if I weren't married)

MissTrip82 · 13/01/2023 05:15

No idea what ‘ridiculously’ thin means. There are lots of different sizes and shapes. There’s no moral aspect to this. You’re not good because you’re thin, or because you reject being ‘ridiculously’ thin. You’re just whatever weight you are.

BMI’s a big range and at my height the range is about 15 kilos. Not really surprising that some would feel large and some small at the upper end of that.

The mockery was really unpleasant.

I don't really see what's attempting to be aristocratic when women either share their experiences of eating disorders or when women share that they feel slim when their weight places them the slim end of the wide healthy window.

At my height the BMI healthy window is 3 stone. Depending on weight and body build that could look very different on different women and each one of us would have a different place we feel slim.

How another woman feels about her body is really nobody else's business.

123ROLO · 13/01/2023 10:33

BMI is weird

If I had a bmi below 21 I'd look emaciated.

At my physical peak I was a size 8, 5'9, I had defined abs, and I was frequently told I was "too slim". My bmi was about 22-23. I was frequently asked how I stayed so skinny.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 13/01/2023 11:29

@BloodAndFire Feelings differ though. I found it funny because I used to use that genre of Mumsnet post as eating disorder fuel, telling myself it was good to starve myself and feel constantly cold and ravenous because We've Lost Sight Of A Healthy Weight and is being underweight really that bad?
I'm 5'4 and I now weigh in the low 50kgs, I don't know the exact figure. I don't feel slim because this is the biggest I have ever been. But I've come to recognise that this is because I have a very skewed perspective, and if I were to tell someone seeking to lose weight like OP that I don't feel slim at my size I'd be doing her a disservice. I felt chunky, clunky, all those loaded words when I was 10kg lighter, but that was not a valid way of thinking. It wasn't OK for me to feel like that just because it was my perspective.

ShellyV · 27/07/2023 09:10

I’m 5ft 2 and feel slim at bmi 20 I’m small framed medium busty 34C and quite fit . I feel gaunt n skinny under that and feel chubby at 22
