What is your bmi if you feel slim?

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 12/01/2023 09:09

Just that really! I have been losing weight since September and am down down to a bmi of 26, i.e almost in the healthy range. But I still have a lot of visible body fat. Anyone else have experience of this? Maybe it's more toning I need.

Aibu to post in aibu?

I agree - these threads are like catnip to those eager to post that they are 5ft 3 and 8 stone, but only feel slim when they’re 7.5 stone or whatever.

Theae threads also don’t address the bigger societal issue of why so many individual women are only happy when they’re at (or below!) the bottom end of a healthy weight range and not happy towards the top end of a healthy weight range. Is it that media expectations and portrayals of women make a lot of us want to be on the very small side of normal BMI?

I agree with this. It's quite depressing to read a thread of women saying they only feel slim when a BMI of 20 or below. People saying they only feel happy when their body is so slim they can't get warm at night, when when are underweight. People saying they feel clunky stones below being even slightly overweight.

I think for all that mumsnet talks about us forgetting what a healthy weight looks like this thread demonstrates we still have a long way to go with regards to women's body image

17/18. I’m 5’6”. It has me down as underweight but I’m not for my frame. I’m very petite (before I get started on again on here for being ‘dangerously underweight’, and accused of having an eating disorder 🙄 by an element of MN). I do a lot of sport and exercise, lift weights, and do MMA. My weight bracket means I get tiny opponents. Win.

superplumb · 12/01/2023 16:51

I think its around 23. Ita been a while but I'm 5.6 and just under 10 stone gives bmi 23. I still felt fat at the time. I'd kill for this now

oldtableleg · 12/01/2023 16:52

slim - 21 at 23 & above I feel & look chubby. I'm short though (just over 5ft 1) which makes such a difference ... would kill for a couple more inches!

But your cold all the time? You aren't comfortable

Genuinely of you feel your body is best at a point where you can't get warm at night time I would gently suggest an issue with body image

Thank you for your very kind and understanding reply. I have suffered with disordered eating throughout my life but i do eat better now. I try and have 3 small meals a day and eat plenty of healthy food (as well as some treats). I have 7 children now and i'm mid thirties so i try to make sure the children see me eating as normal as possible. I have tried to seek help in the past but I do feel better now, albeit cold. Again thank you kindly.

I look and feel slim when my BMI is 25. I have naturally broad shoulders and big wrists.

poppypetal · 12/01/2023 17:35

Mine is 18.3 (just calculated it!)

Apparently I’m underweight according to the NHS website, but I’m definitely not. I’d say I’m slim but not skinny. I’m 5ft 10 and weigh 9st 2lb.

HangingOver · 12/01/2023 17:37

19

I feel slim when a size 8, which is a BMI 24 for me (at 6ft tall).
currently sitting at size 12, BMI 25, so a bit to go.

This doesn't sound right. I'm 5'9" and a bmi of 23 but I'm a size 10/12. Are you using the NHS calculator?

Menopants · 12/01/2023 17:41

I’m currently 24 and feel ok but not slim. I feel slim at 21. I’m 5’8”

AliciaJohnson · 12/01/2023 17:42

18-19 is my ideal. 20 is acceptable. However, I have a long history of anorexia, so make of that what you will.

Patchworksack · 12/01/2023 17:44

My current BMI is 25 and I feel flabby - I need to lose nearly a stone to be my happy weight and BMI 22-23.

Watsername · 12/01/2023 17:49

21 - I get lots of comments about being too thin, so I guess I look slim.

lljkk · 12/01/2023 17:53

I'm told I'm slim. My BMI is 20-21.
I start looking at size 12 for trousers.
38-29-39, or something like that.

kingofchaos · 12/01/2023 17:53

Good grief, what a depressing thread.

Cluelessat33 · 12/01/2023 17:57

21-22. I'm 5'7. Flat stomach. Walk lots everyday with my dogs. I wouldn't want to loose much at this point or I start looking gaunt.

Redblanky · 12/01/2023 18:29

22, but I'm m quite strong/toned. I think I could feel flabby at the same weight if it wasn't for all the exercise I do.

shivawn · 12/01/2023 18:30

BMI is 23.5 and I consider myself slim. 5'6 and size 8.

jevoudrais · 12/01/2023 18:43

I feel slim when my BMI is 21. It's currently 23 and I'd say I'm slimmiish.

olderthanyouthink · 12/01/2023 18:44

16, I feel like 💀

Yes great. Should we keep it a secret tho? Are we not allowed to discuss our body image since it's such a terrible thing.

How about you go and start a thread about the terrible injustices of society instead of shaming women for wanting to feel good about themselves.

Everyone else thank you that does help. I would say most people said 21-22 so I think that is what I will aim for.

GyozaGuiting · 12/01/2023 19:53

21 feels right for me (short with a small frame), much higher and I start to look a bit chunky!

Season0fTheWitch · 12/01/2023 19:58

Mine is 17 currently, I wear a size 4-6 right now. I'm 3mo postpartum so this fluctuates but I feel healthy and happy with this.

spuddel · 12/01/2023 20:04

My BMI is 21, am 5ft 4 and 9 stone but naked I know I need to lose a few pounds to look slimmer. I swim and am about to start weight training to try to keep the flab in check. 55 yr old.
