To buy a load of Prime drinks?

Dowhahdiddy · 11/01/2023 22:42

I’m currently abroad and those Prime drinks that everyone is going gaga over in the UK for, are easily available here and only £1.40 a bottle. AIBU to buy a boatload and sell them all on eBay when I get back to the UK next week? I’ve seen people selling empty bottles for £50 each on eBay!! I think it’s ridiculous that people are paying those prices but, I wouldn’t be forcing anyone to buy them, I’d just stick them into auction and people can pay whatever they’re willing to pay. A fool and their money and all that? Should I cash in whilst I can?

@dementedpixie Ah thank you for that clarification. However, I guess schools are worrying (the warning was a primary school's letter to parents) and the reality is that the difference between caffeine and non caffeine will be hard to distinguish (clever branding) once both versions are available freely.

Anyway, OP can do what they like, free will and all that, but I think it's poorly judged if they do.

And will those bottles explode?! A scientist is bound to be along with some juicy horror stories.

*You know exactly what people are saying. Just because businesses make a profit and just because other people take advantage, it doesn’t give OP a free pass.

Attitudes like that make me really lose faith in humanity even further.*

It's the hypocrisy of chastising OP that annoys me.

" of the backs of desperate children'

For a holdall of Prime.

I meant ‘’desperate’’ as in desperate to try it, to fit in with their peers, not desperate as in destitute.

Things like this are important to kids and it’s important to parents to provide for their kids in that way at times.

I now know what it was like for my parents at Christmas when they had no money and got into debt to make sure the we had a good day, for example.

The scenario is slightly different, but situations like that are why people pay those prices and OP knows that. Kids don’t understand the value of things.

Kids are always flapping about trying to keep on trend with their peer group be it music, fashion, gadgets, slang or whatever and it is daft to expect the parents to fork out for whatever temporary fad hits the playground. To be honest any parents who fall into debt in order to indulge in this kind of nonsense need to have a word with themselves. It is entirely possible to say 'no' and explain why. Sure, the pestering kids will sulk and moan but they will get over it and maybe learn a lesson in managing disappointment.

There is ALWAYS a craze or a 'thing'.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 12/01/2023 11:37

I think the moment has passed. Ds9 was nattering for them mid December. Ds13 couldnt give a shit. We’ve got about 8 bottles just by nipping into Asda at the right time. Even ds9 hasn’t mentioned them since Xmas.

Kids can be bullied for being left out and not having the same things as their friends. Yes, it’s sensible and possible to say no, but OP is playing on knowing that they don’t. Actively encouraging this type of thing is wrong.

Anyway, it’s just my opinion and the OP can do what he/she likes. Everyone else is doing it so it must be okay and I am BU

Whatafustercluck · 12/01/2023 12:50

If as PP say, they taste disgusting, all those parents who spent £1000 in Aldi for a tray of 12 are going to be left with open packs of 11 sitting in the bedrooms of kids all over the country.

If they'd bought them at RRP from Aldi it would cost £24. The problem is those who bought them at RRP solely to mark them up and sell them on at 5x that to children. Of course there is no way I'd allow my ds to pay that for a drink, and you would not believe the number of arguments the word 'Prime' has caused in our house as a result.

Dowhahdiddy · 12/01/2023 12:59

It occurred to me last night that I can make a listing now and only buy the bottles if they sell on my eBay. I’ll just buy them all on the morning before my flight as we don’t fly back until the evening. The comments about poor deprived children are funny, it’s a coconut water drink with added flavourings. It’s something kids want, it’s not something that’s needed. I know my own kids have asked for stuff before that’s on trend and I’ve said no because it’s stupidly priced. It could be a valuable lesson for them, it does your children good to hear the word no occasionally 😉 The comment about people getting into debt to please their kids, how daft are they?! Taking out a loan to buy your kids something they don’t need is utterly irresponsible and totally on you. Voting is at 70% YANBU so I’ve made a few listings for individual bottles and I’ll see how it goes. Bidding starts at 99p plus P+P. My own kids need clothes, food, we have electricity and gas bills to pay, so if I do make any profit it will be well spent on things that are actually needed. I feel no guilt over making a few quid out of those with more money than sense. I sell things on eBay quite often and our post office very rarely has a queue (strange comment) and as much as I value my time, Im happy to post something in order to make a few quid, that’s kinda how eBaying works.

It’s not like I’m reselling hand sanitizer during a pandemic like many were. It’s just a silly drink and none of your kids NEED this drink, and none of you parents need to buy it. If your kids are being bullied at school because they don’t have a bottle of Prime then I suggest you take that up with the school (another whacky comment 😂) 😉

You could say that about anything though - Canada Goose parkas, Yeezy trainers, Squiggle crap, whatever. At some point every parent has to have the "you can't have that, I don't care if everyone else does" conversation, and in absolute terms compared to many crazes the amount of money isn't actually that big.

Things are worth what someone will pay for them. If they are available at a lower price than the OP is offering or not viewed as worth what the OP is charging, hers won't sell. That's basic capitalism for you. I suspect she's already missed the market peak, but she can charge whatever she wants and people will make their own decision on whether it's worth it to them, just as you make a decision on whether, say, a £30 moisturiser or a £60 haircut or a £4 latte is worth it to you.

Flapjackquack · 12/01/2023 13:08

OP I think you are just being goady and unpleasant now.

And no I haven’t bought my child any overpriced drink or clothes etc. They are 2, before you think I am bitter.

Am I correct in assuming this "Prime" stuff is flavoured water?
🤔

MistyLuna · 12/01/2023 13:39

W0tnow · 12/01/2023 08:41

I’d never heard of it. It’s just another version of red bull dressed up as a high performance drink? Why is it so popular?

Worse. At least Red Bull has caffeine in it.

This is just a bottle of water, of which only 10% coconut water, and then a few vitamins added and probably some flavouring.

It’s much cheaper and healthier to have one multivitamin tablet and a glass of tap water.

Yup — just water, of which 10% is coconut water, and some vitamins and flavouring added.

No sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol. Just water! Like I said, drink a glass of tap water with a multivitamin tablet from Holland & Barrett and Bob’s your uncle.

"Things like this are important to kids and it’s important to parents to provide for their kids in that way at times."

I couldn't disagree more. It's important to teach them it's only a "must have" due to some influencers say so and than no drink is worth paying ££ over the recommended retail price.

It's about that influencer getting more money - that's why they created this hype over a drink. It's ok to teach kids that, it's giving them critical thinking skills.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 12/01/2023 13:44

Coconut water..?

🤮🤮🤮

God, I'd rather drink the shitty domestos-flavoured stuff from the tap!

Imagine it was being sold for £20-25 a bottle in the run up to Xmas. How many parents & grand parents were guilt-tripped into buying this??!! It’s a joke.

IntentionalError · 12/01/2023 13:53

Idiots fighting each other to spend their hard earned money on over-priced, over-hyped bottles of sugar water.
This is why I genuinely love capitalism. Because there really is a sucker born every day.

Totally.

Except it's not branded PRIME, which is what this is all about.

Errrr you quoted me and asked me a direct question? I think it was safe to assume I could answer. You are very odd. Have fun profiteering.

What even is it???

mollibu · 12/01/2023 14:29

Unpopular opinion it seems OP but I would just to get an extra bit of cash!

My local petrol station is selling them for £10 a bottle and sells out daily!!
