Peas aren't classed as a 5 a day

Im shocked. I've been trying to eat 5 fruit and veg per day to improve my general health only to realise peas don't count!

Ah to hell with all these dictats. Next it will be 500 portions of this or that per day. I'm done with all the instructions.

I take a multivitamin, iron (prescribed for anaemia unrelated to diet), flaxseed for fibre and a berry and spinach smoothie every day, and that my friends is that.

Anyway peas give me enough wind to launch a parachute. So no.

If you're worryng about the calorie content of fucking peas, you really need to get a life.
A whole 81 calories? Wow. Better go for a run!

I’m not worrying at all just pointing out facts, most people would have more than 80 grams so the calories for a small part of a meal can be relatively high compared to other veg, when I’m watching calories I substitute peas for green beans.

Chickalettaetta · 11/01/2023 21:27

Oh well my 2 year old had potatoes and peas with his roast chicken for tea so I feel like a failure now!

(I'm kidding, peas and potatoes are excellent nutrient dense foods in my book and I won't hear otherwise!) 😁

LikeTearsInRain · 11/01/2023 21:30

Oh my god!

So why do birdseye lie on their bag? M&S are the only supermarket we can trust?

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 11/01/2023 21:31

It is because they are awful. Roll around, fall off your fork, always one stuck under the bite of food you were saving for last, ruining it.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 21:34

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/01/2023 21:22

“Why don’t M&S put it in their packets?”

You actually need to be told that a pea is a vegetable!?

This is possibly the most stupid post I’ve ever read.

Obviously I know that they're a vegetable..I just queried why they weren't classed as a 5 a day..

I only like petit pois, preferably in something like risotto or fried rice

Pease are a great protein source and nutritionally valuable!

Peas are good, peas are good!

wossgoinon · 11/01/2023 21:50

Give peas a chance

JinglingSpringbells · 11/01/2023 21:51

Obviously I know that they're a vegetable..I just queried why they weren't classed as a 5 a day..

But there are loads of fruit and veg on sale in open markets, supermarkets etc that are not labelled as 'one of your 5 a day'. Some even come without a bag round them!

Exactly. I’ve honestly never noticed any of my veg having a label on to say they’re ‘one of your five a day’. Most of it just comes loose.

ThereIbledit · 11/01/2023 21:53

Oh do behave PinkFluff76

Peas are food, they have nutritional value in protein, carbs and vitamins and minerals. They are a perfectly acceptable part of a healthy diet.

Carbohydrates are food and is a healthy component of a healthy diet.

"Carbs are bad for your health. The nonsense is you thinking carbs are for eating. They are unnecessary. Do some research and wonder why the world is getting fatter and more unhealthy when people eat cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta/rice/potato at dinner time."

If you're going to make claims like this the etiquette is to show your work. Don't tell other people to do their research, show yours!

Incidently, the NHS, the two main weight loss organisations in the UK, along with Diabetes UK, Heart UK, British Heart Foundation, the British government, the World Heath Organisation, The American CDC, BUPA, Age UK, Heart UK and the British Nutrition Foundation all list carbohydrates as part of a healthy diet.

Our brains need carbohydrate to function.

Carbohydrate plays a normal part of cell respiration. Whilst it's true that cells can produce energy without carbohydrates, there's a fair bit of evidence to suggest that solely relying on no carbs for cell respiration has negative long term health effects.

Moreover the studies showing the benefits of a carb free diet are short term - there's a fair bit of evidence to show that people just can't stick to them longer term.

Carbs are good for your health. Eating too many many carbs is a problem, I agree, particularly starchy carbs with inadequate protein/fat/fibre, and inadequate exercise.

"High carb veg like peas, carrots, corn, butternut squash don’t help."

it's not "high carb veg" like these that cause the metabolic problems associated with eating too many carbs. The ones you've mentioned contain fibre, vitamins and minerals and protein, important components of a healthy diet. It's too much white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and sugar that are the carbs which are a problem, and again only then they are a problem if consumed in excess.

As I have previously said , I've been conditioned to look for the 5 a day label. Especially in prepacked food. Obviously I know when I'm buying non prepacked food.

DoneWithHer · 11/01/2023 21:57

Just on the spud talk.... The guidance comes from the World Health Organisation, not the government. Yes potatoes are nutritious, but they are placed on the carbs shelf rather than veg because nutritionally the makeup of nutrients they contain is closer to a carb than a veg. Fruit and veg should be the largest food group we consume, followed by carbs so nobody is saying not to eat them!

Greenalien1 · 11/01/2023 21:59

Balls they are the only veggie my DS will eat, I thought I was safe giving him these every meal 😂

'Conditioned'.

By whom?

I've never even thought about labels.

You know that the 5 a day thing is bullshit, right?

They picked 5 because it is what they thought they could get british people to accept as a goal for daily fruit and veg. In other countries, they suggest things like 7 a day or 9 a day. But for Britain, the government health department thought 5 would be what they could convince us to eat.

5 a day is really, really easy. Aim for more.

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/01/2023 22:07

Oh I’d love some pea and ham soup right now!

autienotnaughty · 11/01/2023 22:08

I include pea's sweetcorn beans and ketchup Smile

Laurakiaora · 11/01/2023 22:10

Potatoes are technically one of your five a day as they're heavily packed with nutrients and goodness. The reason they're not included as a five a day vegetable is because as a nation we eat a huge amount of potatoes already and didn't need a push to eat more so they were excluded in an effort to get people eating other fruit and veg.
