Im shocked. I've been trying to eat 5 fruit and veg per day to improve my general health only to realise peas don't count!

SmileWithADimple · 11/01/2023 19:47

What?? Why not?!

DolphinWars · 11/01/2023 19:48

Sweetcorn isn’t either, iirc.
Or potatoes 😭

Badleg87 · 11/01/2023 19:48

Who says? Nope not having it, They're the best vegetable!

SocksAndTheCity · 11/01/2023 19:48

🤯

Pterrydactyl · 11/01/2023 19:49

They aren’t? 🤯

Icannoteven · 11/01/2023 19:49

😂 Why have you ruined peas for me?

Expand on this please. Why aren’t they one of your five a day (isn’t it 7 a day or something now?)

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:49

God knows I bought some mighty peas from marks and spencers and the 5 a day symbol wasn't on the pack so I googled it... I'm shocked, baked beans are so this seems wrong!

JinglingSpringbells · 11/01/2023 19:49

They are.

Potatoes aren't.

You are looking at a wrong list.

All legumes and pulses count.

bellac11 · 11/01/2023 19:50

Potatoes are one of the most nutrient dense veggies there are which is why I dont follow the so called guidance

Plus it bigs up things like sweet potato which is not only disgusting but so sweet that it encourages a sweet tooth.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:50

I like peas..I thought I was smashing my healthy eating.. this is terrible for the peas

OP posts:
TyneTeas · 11/01/2023 19:50

NHS thinks they do...

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/5-a-day/portion-sizes

Seeline · 11/01/2023 19:50

Cooked vegetables
The same quantity as you would eat for a fresh portion. For example, a portion is 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked vegetables, such as carrots, peas or sweetcorn, or 8 cauliflower florets.

From the NHS website.
They do count

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2023 19:51

peas are easy and cheap. No hope for the 5 a day or 30 a day of peas can’t be included.

GiltEdges · 11/01/2023 19:51

According to the NHS they do count:

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/5-a-day/portion-sizes/

Peas aren't classed as a 5 a day
Helpel · 11/01/2023 19:51

They do - but you can only count them once. So it doesn't matter how many pulses you eat in a day, you can only count it as one portion (beans, peas, lentils). I think I read that right anyway!

dementedpixie · 11/01/2023 19:51

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/5-a-day/portion-sizes/ Says 3 heaped tablespoons of peas is a portion. Where are you getting your info from?

CheesyCrumpet · 11/01/2023 19:51

I thought pea's were supposed to be full of vitamins and stuff?
It's taking the pea's!

Slimmer2018 · 11/01/2023 19:52

They’re legumes or pulses same as chickpeas, haricot beans (baked beans) etc

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/01/2023 19:52

Of course they are.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:52

Thank god! I just done a general Google and it said they weren't. They are pulses... wonder why my m&s mighty peas have no mention of 5 a day

OP posts:
Slimmer2018 · 11/01/2023 19:52

5 a day refers to vegetables and fruit

Xiaoxiong · 11/01/2023 19:52

I would guess because they're too sweet/starchy and not enough fibre?

Suzi89 · 11/01/2023 19:52

Where are you getting this from? I just googled and apparently they are

dementedpixie · 11/01/2023 19:53

DolphinWars · 11/01/2023 19:48

Sweetcorn isn’t either, iirc.
Or potatoes 😭

Sweetcorn counts but potatoes are counted as a starchy food rather than a vegetable

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/01/2023 19:53

I eat peas nearly every day, they are my favourite easy veg! I definitely count them.
