Im shocked. I've been trying to eat 5 fruit and veg per day to improve my general health only to realise peas don't count!

OP posts:
Figrolls14 · 11/01/2023 20:42

Also, the vegans I know all eat pea protein - that’s a green veg doing double duty in my book.

WaddleAway · 11/01/2023 20:43

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:58

Ha true I need to look at my information sources.. but why aren't m&s putting it on their packs

Because most people don’t need telling what constitutes a vegetable?

ChristmasTensions · 11/01/2023 20:41

@dementedpixie that’s incorrect. What they mean by that is that you can’t count TWO portions of different dried fruit etc. Even if you eat raisins and dried apricots in a day, only one of the two can count. Even if you have an apple juice and an orange juice in a day, only one counts. That’s because the sugar partially counteracts the goodness. This is a separate part of the guidance specific to those types of foods.

However, with fresh fruit or veg, you can’t eat two portions of the same thing and count it as two. Two bananas counts as ONE portion. You need to have 5
DIFFERENT fruits or vegetables. Otherwise obviously I could eat a huge portion of tomatoes and claim I’d had my 5 a day.

It's marketing though, this gives it a seriousness it doesn't need.

Boomboom22 · 11/01/2023 20:44

No, the link the op put said only 1 legume counts per day. That's what she misread as peas not even counting as 1.

I always follow the money. E.g breakfast is the most important meal of the day (says Kellogs).

A mars a day helps you work rest and play (says Mars)

Diamonds last forever (says de beers)

Peas don't count...looks suspiciously at spinach company.....

Wetblanket78 · 11/01/2023 21:00

I'm sure they are think it's mushy and marrowfat peas that aren't. I remember seeing a post on Facebook though about a woman who lost weight by eating mushy peas as a snack.

ThereIbledit · 11/01/2023 21:04

Peas have lots of goodnes in them. From BBC Good food website:

Nutrition in an 80g serving of peas:

5.4g protein
1.3g fat
8.0g carbohydrates
4.5g fibre
184mg potassium
104mg phosphorus
1.2mg iron
13mg vitamin C

Nutritionally, there is little difference between fresh and frozen peas, making frozen a useful and cost-effective alternative.
What are the 5 top health benefits of peas?

  1. Good source of plant-based protein
Being rich in fibre and one of the best plant-based proteins makes peas a satisfying component of a meal. They are also a useful vegan source of iron, which is needed for making red blood cells and transporting oxygen around the body.
  1. May improve blood sugar management
With a low glycaemic index (GI) and a high fibre content, peas are a useful inclusion if you need to monitor your blood sugar levels. Peas contain starch in the form of amylose, which slows our digestion and as a result, studies support that they may help improve our blood sugar balance. Peas also contain nutrients like magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C, all of which help support blood sugar management.
  1. May support digestive health
Peas are rich in fibre which both supports digestive health and fuels the beneficial gut microbes, which play a pivotal role in our health. Much of the fibre content is soluble, which may alleviate constipation. Eating more fibre is associated with a reduced risk of a number of conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
  1. May support heart health
Peas contain heart-friendly minerals including magnesium, potassium and calcium and are also rich in antioxidant nutrients like vitamin C, as well as phytonutrients including carotenoids and flavonols which are heart protective and support cardiovascular function. The soluble fibre peas contain helps us manage cholesterol levels, especially LDL cholesterol.
  1. May be cancer protective
Regularly including legumes, like peas, in your diet may reduce the risk of cancer due to their high antioxidant levels. Peas also contain natural compounds called saponins, these compounds have been shown to help protect against some forms of cancer

Fuck Ro

Pinkfluff76 · 11/01/2023 21:07

You’re all wrong. Peas are carbs and shouldn’t be eaten.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/01/2023 21:07

They need to rethink all this now, it’s a vegetable. As long as it’s not drenched in fat it’s ok.

No they aren't. They have carbs, they aren't carbs, and carbs are for eating too.
What nonsense is this?

Tigofigo · 11/01/2023 21:11

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/01/2023 19:57

They most certainly are.

If someone’s saying they aren’t it’s likely an attempt to get people who might just eat peas/corn every single day to have more variety of veg in their diet.

Also, it’s actually supposed to be at least 8-10 a day, but it was thought that 5 was more likely to seem achievable.

I'll start eating 8-10 a day when I win the lottery! For a family of 4 that's 40 pieces of fruit or veg - which ideally are all different - every day. It would cost a fortune. And mi kids would leave most of it.

Portion sizes are big, too - 2 satsumas or kiwis, 10 radishes, 14 mushrooms all count as one portion, for example.

Realistically I think I just about manage 5. 2-3 pieces of fruit and 2-4 veg but often smaller portions.

I do try not to rely on peas, as we eat lots of pulses, but are sugar snap peas, mange tout, green beans much better?

Maybe when your calories counting trying to be healthy you do

"Some people think legumes aren't good for you"

I've never heard that. What do they say is wrong with them? They're vegetables with lots of protein so very important I'd think.

WaddleAway · 11/01/2023 21:13

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 21:11

Maybe when your calories counting trying to be healthy you do

But you know peas are healthy and low calorie, don’t you?

ArabellaScott · 11/01/2023 21:14

The Shamen even made a song about it. 'Peas are good'.

HarryArry · 11/01/2023 21:14

I have peas nearly everyday, it’s an easy way to add a bit of protein to a meal.

Pinkfluff76 · 11/01/2023 21:16

They’re 73% carbs to be precise. They are not part of healthy eating. Carbs are bad for your health. If you think peas contribute to your 5 a day then knock yourself out. The nonsense is you thinking carbs are for eating. They are unnecessary. Do some research and wonder why the world is getting fatter and more unhealthy when people eat cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta/rice/potato at dinner time. High carb veg like peas, carrots, corn, butternut squash don’t help.

wowwhydoesmybackhurtwaaah · 11/01/2023 21:18

CArbs are not bad for your health.

What a load of bullshit you people do spout. gO dO YouR RESeaRch INdeED.

Lightningfast · 11/01/2023 21:18

@Tigofigo Totally with you on the portion sizes being ridiculously large. Apparently three sticks of celery is a single portion. When does anyone ever eat three sticks of celery all together? And a bowlful of salad is one portion, so having salad on a sandwich (the amount I would put on) would not be enough to count on its own. I do find it hard to get in the full five every day.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/01/2023 21:19

WaddleAway · 11/01/2023 21:13

But you know peas are healthy and low calorie, don’t you?

I wouldn’t say they are low calorie. They are far higher than geeen beans, carrots, cabbage etc. an 80 gram serving of green beans is about 27 calories, peas are about 81 calories.

wowwhydoesmybackhurtwaaah · 11/01/2023 21:22

If you're worryng about the calorie content of fucking peas, you really need to get a life.
A whole 81 calories? Wow. Better go for a run!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/01/2023 21:22

“Why don’t M&S put it in their packets?”

You actually need to be told that a pea is a vegetable!?

This is possibly the most stupid post I’ve ever read.
