Im shocked. I've been trying to eat 5 fruit and veg per day to improve my general health only to realise peas don't count!

Give peas a chance!

Potatoes are one of the most nutrient dense veggies there are which is why I dont follow the so called guidance

Plus it bigs up things like sweet potato which is not only disgusting but so sweet that it encourages a sweet tooth.

I think they're only healthy if you eat them all, including the skin, and not in a fried manner.

They aren't included because then people eating chips, crisps, waffles, hash brown etc would think they were eating veg and all good. I think. Potatoes that is. Peas obv are a veg.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:54

Sorry peas...I can't upload my screen shot but it says they're not..

I think I'd rather take nutritional advice from the NHS than Cosmo.

Findyourneutralspace · 11/01/2023 19:57

That’s not fair.

Give peas a chance

dementedpixie · 11/01/2023 19:57

So you're going by cosmopolitan and the daily mail rather than the nhs advice?

Where are you getting this from? I just googled and apparently they are

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/01/2023 19:57

They most certainly are.

If someone’s saying they aren’t it’s likely an attempt to get people who might just eat peas/corn every single day to have more variety of veg in their diet.

Also, it’s actually supposed to be at least 8-10 a day, but it was thought that 5 was more likely to seem achievable.

wowwhydoesmybackhurtwaaah · 11/01/2023 19:57

Green fresh peas are not pulses though. Only dry peas.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 19:58

Ha true I need to look at my information sources.. but why aren't m&s putting it on their packs

OP posts:
yorkshirepudsx · 11/01/2023 19:59

I'd still count them, no 5 a day police to police it 🤷‍♀️🤣🤣

JustDanceAddict · 11/01/2023 19:59

They are!
Potatoes aren’t as they’re classed as a carb along w pasta etc.

dementedpixie · 11/01/2023 19:59

Do you need M&S to tell you whether a vegetable is a vegetable? Is it just bog standard peas you have bought?

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/01/2023 19:59

Because hopefully people can work it out for themselves? As much veg to fit into your cupped hand is a good guideline for one portion.

Their head is still over the place after the whole Colin the caterpillar incident

SpanishSalsaing · 11/01/2023 20:00

So? It's a made up piece of "science" anyway.

Seeline · 11/01/2023 20:01

That says they can't be counted as more than one of your five a day IE if you eat them twice a day they still only count as one portion.

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 20:01

I bought mighty peas infused with chilli.. they're lush

OP posts:
Throwaway9billion · 11/01/2023 20:02

It says in your screenshot that they don't count as more than one of your 5 a day, not that they don't count at all.

I wonder if there's been people think that every 1 pea is 1 part of 5 a day and that's why they had to put it?
Like "oh I had 30 peas today, that's 30 of my 5 a day" hahaha

bellalou1234 · 11/01/2023 20:04

OK I panicked.. I'm conditioned to see the symbol of 5 a day.. sorry for scaring everyone

Sweetcorn counts but potatoes are counted as a starchy food rather than a vegetable

Sweet potatoes however count as a 5 a day...

Sweet potatoes, parsnips, swedes and turnips do count towards your 5 A Day because they're usually eaten in addition to the starchy food part of the meal.
Potatoes play an important role in your diet, even if they don't count towards your 5 A Day. It's best to eat them without any added salt or fat.

Whereas "regular" potates do not count because they usually are eaten as the starchy part of a meal..

I personally have always been a bit dubious in regards to that exlanation tbh. If I were to have regular potatoes as an addition to pasta.. Will the regular potatoes suddenly become a vegetable? Hmm
And I generally don't eat sweet potatoes in addition to other starches but as a starchy food... But that may be less common, Idk.

hoppityscotch · 11/01/2023 20:06

Are these the same as the aldi ones?

Redblanky · 11/01/2023 20:08

They do count. Some people think legumes aren't good for you (others say they are) so some regimes wouldn't allow/count them, but they are included in the five a day guidance.

Personally I think potatoes should count too. They contain all the good stuff other veg have and much better than white pasta or bread for nutrients and fibre, but they're too high in carbs/calories to be encouraged in the same way as ither veg. . One or two portions a day is a good thing IMO though, after all they have enough vitamin C that their introduction cured scurvy!
