Dh disapproves of coffee in bed?

Please help settle a disagreement. Early mornings with dcs are proving challenging atm, therefore I have suggested bringing our Dulce Gusto pod machine up to the bedroom. This will mean i can enjoy a quick coffee before the chaos starts, rather than during or not at all. Dh thinks it should stay in the kitchen "where it belongs." He says coffee in bed is lazy. AIBU or should I be a rebel?

I don't drink coffee as I don't like the taste but reading through this thread I wish I did - and I would definitely be having the coffee machine in the bedroom, the idea of starting the day off with a relaxing coffee in bed sounds lush!

Team OP here!

MaverickGooseGoose · 10/01/2023 13:52

It's just as coffee version of a teas made. Personally I couldn't be bothered and what do you do with the milk, and I'd have one upstairs and downstairs as it sounds like a faff otherwise.

I've never got the appeal of coffee in bed though, or breakfast for that matter.

Is it noisy?

oudie · 10/01/2023 13:55

Im just wondering how anyone can wake up and not need to pee before having a coffee.

ArtixLynx · 10/01/2023 13:56

my parents had a teasmade when i was growing up.. weekends were heralded bt the sound of them having first cuppa in bed.

Now she's older, mom has a coffee machine, and a kettle/mugs in her bedroom too.

rumporolypolyofthebailey · 10/01/2023 13:56

Genius idea, like a hotel room without the piss in the kettle fear. Wish I had thought of it when dc were babies. I remember my parents having a "Teasmade" they didn't use it in the summer because of the fresh milk thing, but pods would work well.

tillyrainbow · 10/01/2023 13:56

I say go for it. I've attempted many a time to go downstairs before DC wake up, and the creaky stairs alert them to me being up straight away. I'd love to have a cuppa in bed to start my morning.

Or brush teeth? I know some eat breakfast before brushing in the morning but I just can't.

Personally I'd hate the idea as I wouldn't want my bedroom to smell of food and drink. Also the idea of eating and drinking in bed makes me feel gross and grubby. I can see why he feels weird about the idea.

What do you do in hotel rooms?

UsuallySuze · 10/01/2023 14:00

I'd love this.

You could always suggest the radical step of...giving it a try Wink Put it in the bedroom for a few days and see whether it makes things easier and, if so, keep it. If not, move it back.

UnfinishedBusiness · 10/01/2023 14:05

For all those saying it’s not right/odd to have one in the bedroom, don’t you enjoy making a coffee in your hotel rooms when you go away? Hop out of bed, pop the machine/kettle on, straight back into bed in a few steps?

For those liking the idea and worrying about milk storage, I bought a 150ml thermo flask and it keeps it nice and cold until the morning.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 10/01/2023 14:09

I don't think it's lazy, I think it's decadent!

Honestly I'd consider it if I didn't need milk, I don't like the dried milk that comes in those pods.

If I were you I'd just be riding roughshod over his ideals and saying I'm trying it for two weeks, he can like it or lump it. If his only objection is 'it's lazy' he can do one.

Flowersinthebasement · 10/01/2023 14:09

I have a travel kettle (tiny), and coffee mate, instant coffee and a mug.

I don't like pod coffee so it works for me. Takes up a tiny amount of space too.

We have an enquire so not far to go. I know they're unpopular on MN, clean my teeth in there too.

I don't, no.

I think it's safe to say people who don't like the idea also don't like coffee in hotel rooms.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/01/2023 14:12

Another "you have a DH problem" situation.

If he'd get off his entitled lazy arse and pitch in in the mornings (as a good husband and father would) then you wouldn't need a coffee machine in the bedroom in the first place!!

My DH left for work before we even got up, but when I got up the coffee was done and the pot was on the warmer, DCs' breakfast was laid on the table, and jackets and bags were by the door.

DPotter · 10/01/2023 14:12

There is a whole generation who aspired to have a teasmaid in the bedroom!

Each to his or her own, but if you want a coffee machine - have one. Unless your DH is able and willing to make you one every morning without fail - yeah thought not

Emmalou0607 · 10/01/2023 14:13

I drink tea but my DH brings me a cup every morning as he starts slightly earlier and at the weekend I will go down and get him coffee and bring it up. Your DH needs to be more receptive to sharing a short amount of time in the morning to make you a coffee as I'm sure you'd do the other way around

Yesterdaywasntreal · 10/01/2023 14:15

Haha @ChiefWiggumsBoy I'm liking the idea of saying it is decadent. I'm going to tell dh he is narrow minded by not understanding the importance of decadence in the bedroom 😂

I take a vacuum flask of coffee up to bed every night, for consumption in the morning. I drink black coffee. I’ve been doing this for decades, from when I used to work shifts and had to get up at stupid o’clock. Surely I can’t be the only person who does this?

Nanny0gg · 10/01/2023 14:18

Wbeezer · 10/01/2023 12:29

DH has been bringing me a coffee in bed in the morning for 20+ years ago so I disagree with your DH! He's a morning person, I'm not!

Less faff than a teasmade!

Yesterdaywasntreal · 10/01/2023 14:21

@FadedRed I like your thinking! I know I felt like I must be on another planet with dh's attitude. Maybe I am 😂but this thread shows me I'm not alone.

OP posts:
warmzebra · 10/01/2023 14:35

@FadedRed I do this too, as I really need coffee to get up, plus the noise of my making coffee will disrupt others' sleep. I can totally understand OP feeling more able to face the day/kids (especially if neurodiverse) after a quiet coffee alone.

If the concern is just bedsheets etc (although I doubt so, your husband just sounds like he doesn't really care about your mental state tbh!), and if there's space – why not do a little coffee corner (armchair or even just chair)? I would also place the machine on one of those high side tables as well so it doesn't look out of place in my bedroom.
