To tell DH to ride for Deliveroo in the evenings?

Like everyone at the moment, we are struggling a bit with the cost of living. We aren't poor by any means (both in middle class jobs) but tbh we have overstretched ourselves wrt our mortgage and private school for 2 DC.

DH has always had his head in the sand when it comes to finances and assured me we could afford the mortgage and private school- and tbf we could prior to the current situation. DH is not willing to countenance any budget cuts such as looking at cheaper areas or state schools.

Frankly we need to bring in extra money to continue to afford our current lifestyle. WIBU to tell DH he will need to get out on his bike and do food deliveries for Deliveroo and Uber Eats to bring in funds if he isn't willing to cut back?

Private school is absolutely not worth making yourself both unwell through overwork for.

Perhaps don't pay your kids to pass exams 🙄

Oh my goodness, OP, don't do that!
That was only 3 days ago and is going to be crazy expensive!

SLS500 · 09/01/2023 19:48

Can you speak with the school about a bursary? You won't be the only family in this situation.

It sounds pretty black and white in terms of you having more out goings than incomings .... sure your dh can see this for himself. What does he think is going to happen? Surely it makes sense to be prepared

Stackss · 09/01/2023 19:48

DH is an early riser so has floated the idea of potentially doing breakfast deliveries on Deliveroo before work.

Ooooh is this the same poster?!

jays · 09/01/2023 19:50

You do it then. For goodness sake, can you not all cut back a bit, the world isn’t going to end if you can’t keep up with yourself! If you have a happy marriage and two kids who are happy and you’re making ends meet, you’re not cold, you’re not hungry, sorry but you’re missing the point of life here, it’s not worth living the way you’re planning to for a pile of stuff that means nothing. People mean something. Not stuff.

Stressybetty · 09/01/2023 19:50

Need to go through all expenses and income and do a detailed list to see exactly where money is going and any possible savings. Check if eligible for any benefits, school bursaries etc

Crikeyalmighty · 09/01/2023 19:51

Not blaming you OP- however if it's that tight then unless you've had a huge drop in income you never could afford private school for two. The most obvious cost saver is state school unless you've got someone to pay the fees like grandparents etc. no second job like deliveroo is going to make private school for 2 more affordable . Tell him you are going to run out if cash so what's his suggestions? And no it won't just be alright- you could both end up with CCJs if you don't give the correct notice and pay accordingly!

PollyAmour · 09/01/2023 18:55

Do Deliveroo really use cyclists to deliver stuff? I'd be pissed off at having to wait for my food. I want it delivered by motorbike or car, quickly. I'm hungry!

In London they do

ittakes2 · 09/01/2023 19:51

If between you you earn enough for private schools I think his skills set would be better used for a second job which pays more?

Stackss · 09/01/2023 19:52

@Crikeyalmighty

The grandparents do assist with the school fees but wouldn't really be in a position to contribute any more.

Why can't he? Ridiculous to make it her responsibility more than his.

Because she is the one ‘telling’ him to do it? I wouldn’t ask anyone to take on a second job if I wasn’t willing to do it myself

Maireas · 09/01/2023 19:53

Tell the twins they're not getting the big exam bonuses.

Stackss · 09/01/2023 19:54

@Maireas

The grandparents will be funding the exam bonuses for the twins.

My arithmetic skills are poor today.

Anyone able to calculate how many breakfasts Mr Stackss will need to deliver (via Deliveroo) in order to pay one twin the £100 for one of the many, many, many Grade 9s they are expected to achieve.

I mean 10 hours revision (each) per weekend, plus 15 hours (each) over five school nights must (unless they are very, very nice but dim) ensure all Grade 9s, surely?

Eyerollcentral · 09/01/2023 19:55

As another poster has said you can’t really afford public school if it’s this tight and if your children require motivating exam bonuses to achieve seems like a total waste of money.

Whatistheanswer2023 · 09/01/2023 19:55

Wouldn’t he still be taxed on total income? You’re saying he’d make £800 net as a Deliveroo driver?

teomama · 09/01/2023 19:56

OP, you're not sharing what you do for a living. If you're established professionals in your fields, you're likely do better by switching jobs than delivering Chinese.

Maireas · 09/01/2023 19:57

Stackss · 09/01/2023 19:54

It's not a good use of their money, especially if you're struggling.
They're yr11 and should be motivated to do well anyway.

brusselspout · 09/01/2023 18:37

Why don't you get on your bike and do it yourself?

That made me laugh

ChampagneLassie · 09/01/2023 20:00

I can't imagine moonlightimg as a deliveroo driver will make much of a dent in a hefty mortgage and school fees!

solomam · 09/01/2023 20:01

GivenchyDahhling · 09/01/2023 18:49

What’s a “middle class job”?

I was wondering this too 😂

neverbeenskiing · 09/01/2023 20:01

If we were having serious discussions about my DH taking a second job to fund our kids education and they had to be bribed to study for their exams i'd be wondering where I'd gone wrong to he honest.

Not really worth working it out considering the grandparents are paying that.

My brother was a deliveroo/uber and Stuart delivery driver.
his car insurance jumped from £1500pa to 3000 for the extra liability.
when you say bike are you meaning a motorbike.
my brother worked 14 hours a day and 6days a week to earn a decent wage after he had accounted for his insurance, petrol and tax liabilities.
your husband will likely pay more tax too as it’s a second job.
all the deliveroo type jobs involve just hanging around a lot waiting for a job to come up- that’s why it attracts a younger worker/ student etc.
