To tell DH to ride for Deliveroo in the evenings?

Stackss · 09/01/2023 18:34

Like everyone at the moment, we are struggling a bit with the cost of living. We aren't poor by any means (both in middle class jobs) but tbh we have overstretched ourselves wrt our mortgage and private school for 2 DC.

DH has always had his head in the sand when it comes to finances and assured me we could afford the mortgage and private school- and tbf we could prior to the current situation. DH is not willing to countenance any budget cuts such as looking at cheaper areas or state schools.

Frankly we need to bring in extra money to continue to afford our current lifestyle. WIBU to tell DH he will need to get out on his bike and do food deliveries for Deliveroo and Uber Eats to bring in funds if he isn't willing to cut back?

If its a second job its even higher tax, if you work in one of the lower brackets I know that for a second job ya pay 30% not 20%

Hi, you really don’t pay 30% tax on a second job

Dailydripfed · 10/01/2023 14:44

If you say so. I’d rather that than a pile of debt and a lifestyle I think I’m entitled to but can’t afford, living off daddy in laws money 😉

Plenty of other posters have pointed out the foolishness of the financial setup without making horrible, classist remarks that are loaded with resentment.

How embarrassing for you. You appear to have forgotten a little thing called tax .

I said roughly 😂

Although tbf I was thinking 20% tax after free pay not 40%.

Suzi89 · 10/01/2023 15:51

Me and my partner are short on money and I’d never expect him to get a second job! You sound like a nightmare to be honest.

MadCatandBirdLady · 10/01/2023 17:07

If Deliveroo is like Uber Eats you get paid per order so you can be out all night and make very little . Also not everyone tips. Also with Uber if you drive a car you have to buy their insurance upfront as well.

MadCatandBirdLady · 10/01/2023 17:08

I wish you luck op but it’s not easy to make a shed load of money

Stackss · 10/01/2023 17:51

So DH will be doing his first Deliveroo shift on Thursday evening. He will then do further shifts on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

He will be doing 4 shifts a week to start with- I expect there will be an element of trial and error to see which times are most profitable.

He will be using a bike to start with so that the car is available for me and the DC, but I have agreed to review this in a month.

Youl be reviewing? How kind. Maybe you could swap?

It’s easy to be snarky but I would be genuinely curious to know how much he actually makes over the course of, say, a month. So I hope you reply with honest figures.

Eyerollcentral · 10/01/2023 17:54

@Stackss its currently blowing a gale here and the sleet is coming in sideways. He’ll be dead of pneumonia in a month, fingers crossed there’s a death in service pay out

MarshaBradyo · 10/01/2023 17:55

Doesn’t sound fun after work but it seems you’ve convinced him

Tax will be a fair chunk though, more because he’s presumably earning quite well with first job

Sherrystrull · 10/01/2023 18:07

Op, you should share the Deliveroo shifts between you and your DH.

Good point. If it’s good for the goose, then it’s good for the gander!

100% this is a wind up

Womencanlift · 10/01/2023 18:38

Been a busy few days for you OP

  • negotiating a bonus structure for your DCs revision (that you are not even paying for)
  • agreeing with your parents and sister that they will sub not only the exam bonus payments but schooling fees
  • looked into a second job for your DH
  • DH applying for and getting the Deliveroo job
  • Deliveroo completing all the background checks so that he can get started in the job this week (quickest application and onboarding process of a job that I have heard of)
  • Working out everything is now going to be fine because of your family bank and your DH’s second job
  • And have two MNs posts trending

All I have done in that time is take down my Christmas decorations 🙄

Do your DC know that their grandparents are having to sub this ridiculous bonus structure? I would have felt embarrassed at that age, or indeed any age, taking money off my grandparents for something I should have been doing to the best of my ability anyway

Deluded op live within your means .

They may have been living within their means, but with the cost of living, things can change. I think I read private schooling fees have risen quite a lot recently.

Her relatives have been contributing to the school fees so no they can’t afford it regardless of inflation. Plus the big house the op even said she was worried about the cost but dh convinced her they could afford it .
but if the op thinks delivery driving Is the way to go then let us all know in a month as we could all do it .

My comments about people pretending to be middle class when they’re drowning in debt and being funded by their parents hit a nerve did it? 😭

God, why do so many people burble this canned response to anything and think it's clever?

It's more laughable than ever when it's coming from someone who's seething with resentment about what they deem to be wealth and class markers.

Twins are very mercenary, dontcha know.

I’ve just read the quote history on this and can’t see any classist comments from the other poster??? Tbh if anyone comes across as boiling with resentment it’s you. Who would be jealous of people robbing Peter to pay Paul and scrambling for school fees?? Other people actually don’t think those ‘wealth and class markers’ are important, they aren’t jealous

Stackss · 10/01/2023 19:54

I think it's important to make clear that Dsis and the grandparents are not struggling financially as a result of their kind contributions, and both are happy to contribute.

Dsis and DBIL are very wealthy due to a business they own and have 4 or 5 houses around the world. The grandparents are not as wealthy, but still very comfortable with a second home and regular holidays etc.

She already says she has a very middle class job. Whatever that means 🤷🏻‍♀️
