To ask DB to pay half towards holiday

My DSIL passed away tragically 5 years ago and since then my DH and I have had a week away in a self- catering cottage once a year with my DB. The three of us get on well and always have a good time. I have always asked my DB for a third of the holiday rental cost thinking there are 3 of us going. My DH feels my DB should pay half since he has a room to himself. We can all afford the holiday comfortably but I feel hard justifying to DB he should pay half. No one’s going to fall out about this but I would like to know your thoughts. AIBU asking for just a third of the cost?

Not many holiday cottages have two equal bedrooms. I bet if there is a double and a king, or a double and a single, you two get the bigger room.

You occupy the bathroom in thirds.

A third is fine.

He should pay 1/3. Mean to ask him got half.

Well obviously that impacts but there's no indication that's the case. Now if it was 1 bedroom with a superking bed plus ensuit and one tiny room with a set of skinny bunk beds that's different, but 2 similar twin/double rooms then 50 50 on the rooms

NumberTheory · 09/01/2023 05:02

I ask fir a third, but we’d get the biggest/best bedroom.

StarsSand · 09/01/2023 05:29

Your DH is being mean and ridiculous.

Thirds are fair. So for many reasons.

Also - Presumably you and DH get the main bedroom and ensuite if there is one.

Very few holiday lets have two identically sized bedrooms.

Your DH is BU. And mean and tight.

@SunsetSkies11 wtf did one person have a king to themselves and 2 people had to share a twin bed? That is messed up

OP by your lack of responses, especially to the master with en-suite vs twin room you know YABU

SleeplessInEngland · 09/01/2023 07:58

Just keep it as a third. It’s basically fair and there’s no way to broach more money without implying he’s been a cheapskate up until now.

I mean a twin bedroom.

1 person had the bedroom with the king bed

2 people shared the bedroom with twin beds.

Everyone got their own bed.

It does seem a bit unfair that the person on the sofa bed paid the same as the one in the king sized room! If it was done by drawing straws or something maybe it’s ok. But better to pay less for crappiest sleeping situation.

Your DH is definitely being tight. If he doesn't want to go on holiday with your brother he can choose not to, but penalising your DB for losing his wife is really shitty and, yes, mean.
