To keep correcting people about my name?

marathonrunn · 08/01/2023 14:04

My name is Amelia as in Ah-me-lee-a.

On a daily basis people pronounce is Ah-meal-ya.

It does my head in. This is people I've known for many years doing it too. It's not my name. When I correct certain friends they roll their eyes and can't understand why it matters. It matters because it's not my name. It is a constant occurrence in the workplace and I'm constantly correcting people.

Should I give up or continue correcting?

Well it sounds almost identical, there is a barely perceptible difference. I'd give up.

Butchyrestingface · 08/01/2023 14:17

Agree with PP.

You must be popular.

There absolutely is a perceptible difference between ah-me-lee-ah than ah-meal-ya.

Isn't it an accent thing?

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2023 14:19

People can’t help their accents. That’s what this sounds like.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 14:19

I can barely detect the difference. But it's your life to spend as you like. Keeping pushing that rock up the hill, Amelia-phus.

Ellie1015 · 08/01/2023 14:20

Massive difference. Love Ameil-i-a really dont like Ah-meel-yah

It is frustrating, i think for close friends have a chat saying it bothers you and hope they listen. It is a difficult habit to break though.

MithrilCostsMore · 08/01/2023 14:21

That's an accent variation, not a different name!

hoppityscotch · 08/01/2023 14:22

Is it their accent?

It’s how it automatically comes out in some accents, I know one, I absolutely know in the abstract that it’s Lee-a, but, sometimes it just doesn’t come out that way.

If they’re not doing it on purpose, then it just makes everyone feel awkward to keep correcting it... and I say that as someone who has a name that people mispronounce in a much bigger way than that.

MissyB1 · 08/01/2023 14:22

The only person I know who pronounces it similar to you is called Amalia, pronounced Ah-ma-lee- a.

I would pronounce your name how everyone else seems to.

user1483387154 · 08/01/2023 14:23

people often pronounce my name wrongly It doesn't bother me

marathonrunn · 08/01/2023 14:23

hoppityscotch · 08/01/2023 14:22

Is it their accent?

No it's not, we have same accents (my friends and most work colleagues).

Agreed. I wouldn't bother making an issue out of it. I usually say my name with two syllables but some people make it into three. I'm not bothered.

ily0 · 08/01/2023 14:24

I wish there was a poll. YABU and precious about your name, no one cares. It’s just a lazy way of saying it and basically sounds the same. I was expecting this to be a genuine thread about people being racist and deliberately mispronouncing a name. People have more important things to care about than your boring name.

LubaLuca · 08/01/2023 14:24

I can't quite work it out, but I think you mean they're missing the third syllable of 4.

This is a regional thing. I live somewhere where William has two syllables and Amelia has three. I stick with a two syllable 'ia', but I'm in the minority here.

hoppityscotch · 08/01/2023 14:25

I think if you've corrected them once then leave it a bit before correcting them again

MySoCalledStrife · 08/01/2023 14:26

I can understand why it irritates you. I have a foreign name which was unusual here when I was born but is more popular now.

My mother pronounces it exactly as it should be said, as do native speakers of the country it's from. Everyone else anglicises the pronounciation.

I've given up trying to correct them. I decided it irritated me more when people shorten my name without my consent. That's a bigger bug bear for me. There are lots of short forms of my name.

You sound like a lovely, kind person. Have a wonderful day.

I have foreign name which is very simple, some people still fuck it up. It's always a certain type who repeatedly messes it up even after correction. I get why it's annoying to you. You are right, it's not your name.
Be petty. Start messing their names up in similar way. You will see how quickly it will matter to them.

I don't see why people say the two pronunciations are the same basically? In my head it's certainly different.

LlynTegid · 08/01/2023 14:28

You should not have to correct people twice. Your pronunciation seems the normal one.

Needmorelego · 08/01/2023 14:29

The way you have written the two ways of saying it - if I read those out loud they sound exactly the same to me. Sorry.

HamsterCheese · 08/01/2023 14:31

I’ve tried a few times but they sound the same to me (southern England accent). I don’t think people are trying to offend you

Notimeforaname · 08/01/2023 14:31

I knew a girl call Nadine but would constantly correct people and say Nay-deen not Na-deen. People still call her Na-dine. You cant control how someone speaks. But itll piss you off trying to.
