For me it’s Alan Rickman (who I absolutely love in everything else) as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. He came across so unbelievably creepy and repulsive and not the gallant kind soul he is in the book.

Have to disagree on the Leonardo DiCaprio hate, because he’s brilliant.

I'd seen him in nothing between Titanic and Shutter Island. I was surprised by how much he'd grown in stature as an actor.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this.
Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3 . Her performance was cringeworthy.
Her ‘death’ scene was hilarious.
She singlehandedly ruined that film.
Nepotism gone wrong

I didn’t even know Bounjour Tristesse was a film! Love the book. Don’t see it as a film though, if that makes sense? Some books you sort of ‘see’ as a film, but others I can’t imagine.

I get what people mean about KK in P&P, but I must say (despite everyone loving it) I’m also not keen on the BBC miniseries of it.

Supposedly, Hugh Laurie did his audition tape in an American accent and at least one of the producers didn't know he was American. He was brilliant in House, and only once that I recall, did his native accent peek though: on the word "placard."

That part was made for Hugh Laurie.

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 19:51

I thought Renee Z. was great in Bridget Jones's Diary. I remember reading the column.

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 19:53

I can't watch KK in anything either. I didn't like the film P&P but loved the miniseries even though 'my' version of the book was different.

Hesma · 07/01/2023 19:55

Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones… awful accent and waaaay too thin

In the books she wavered between 8st12 and 9st 2. RZ was a lot bigger than that, which defeated the whole point (as pp has said) of Bridget NOT being at all overweight, but just thinking she was.

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 19:58

I liked Andie McD in FWAAF. She wasn't a key character.
Ruth W has been excellent in everything I've seen her in.

verdantverdure · 07/01/2023 20:05

All those films where they thought a white Hollywood actor would be great as a person of colour.

However,

We're currently watching Pale Blue Eye and almost everyone in it seems to be British but playing American.

I don't mind it.

Tom Hanks in Elvis. Cartoon character!

David Jason as Rincewind, absolutely wrong!

Oh my, the love for Kevin Costner as Robin Hood! No, he destroyed my Robin Hood fantasy outright 😔, but to be fair he is excellent in Yellowstone.

Omg, I LOVE this series! I just binged the 8 episodes of series 5, having saved them to binge. I admire KC in it hugely. I think my favourite character is Rip, the very likeable mass murderer. I also massively admire people who ride better than me. 😳

Wishimaywishimight · 07/01/2023 20:18

Meryl Streep. I know she is apparently an amazing actress but I always just see her as Meryl Streep no matter what part she is playing. The only time I enjoyed watching her, even a little bit, was as a ghost in Mamma Mia 2.

Ludoole · 07/01/2023 20:21

Tom Hanks, DeVinci code. Just no.
I love Tom Hanks and all his films but he was NOT the Robert Langdon I pictured from the books.

tripletrouble · 07/01/2023 20:44

Definitely Andie McDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral - completely ruined it for me!

I agree. She was dire.

Actupfishy · 07/01/2023 22:06

Anne Hathaway in ‘one day’

moggerhanger · 07/01/2023 23:54

Julie Christie in anything. Absolutely beautiful to look at, but by the goddess she's wooden.

You'll be moving to Montana this year so @Cherrysoup 😀a horse, find a nice cowboy who'll show you how to break a wild stallion in (as long as the cowboy is not a Kevin, though) 😂

JaneJeffer · 08/01/2023 02:03

Thought of another, Tom Hardy as Heathcliff. Like, what the fuck?

Jesus my fantasy world has just fallen apart. I never knew Tom Hardy played Heathcliff and I thought google it fast (love Tom Hardy and love Wuthering Heights) and now...... I think I don't like him anymore. It sounded better on paper. Does Tom Hardy only work with a beard? Can't believe it.

aonbharr · 08/01/2023 04:05

Andie McDowell in 4 weddings and a funeral. I honestly think anyone at all would have been better sadly.

Flipflops123 · 08/01/2023 04:21

Tom cruise in Collateral

Mothership4two · 08/01/2023 11:21

Julian Sands as the love interest in Room with a View - he comes across as wet and not someone to inspire great passion from Lucy Honeychurch. I had loved the book and thought the rest of the cast were brilliant. His rather wooden acting just couldn't stand up to talent around him

Mothership4two · 08/01/2023 11:42

Didn't mind Alan Rickman in S&S although the nearly 30 year age gap made me pause although not uncommon for the time. Didn't feel either couple had any chemistry and Emma Thompson was too old for the part. Think there's about a 16 year age gap at her and Kate Winslet
