AIBU to be annoyed when a random stranger asks this question??
Wtf.

On a dating site it's relevant - there might be all sorts of reasons why someone might want to restrict their dating pool to people who are happy to get about without relying on public transport/lifts/their own muscle power. People have complicated lives. You could always answer "Only if I have to" if you are worried that they might be asking in order to take advantage.

YABU to classify people who are trying to work out whether a relationship with you might work as "random strangers" - they are people who are trying to work out whether or not you might be compatible, and for whatever reason for them this is a relevant question. If just asking the question rules them out for you then you are also unreasonable for being annoyed as them asking is giving you useful information, which you can use to make a judgement about them, so it's all good.

I'm overly invested in this, but am wondering @Aquarius1234 what questions are on the "allowed to ask me this" list, when getting to know someone, as I genuinely can't see how this would offend anyone.

What do you ask, or what do you feel is reasonable to be asked ?

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/01/2023 16:32

I don’t drive and have stupid and judged all my life and even I wouldn’t be bothered being asked that.

juice92 · 06/01/2023 17:18

On a dating site, if there was nothing that implied they drove (picture of them in the car, hard to commute to job, mentioning in passing they were driving somewhere) I would ask yes as someone being able to drive/having a car would be a none negotiable for me if I was dating. I drive and am generally quite happy to, but don't won't to do it all the time.

Not that unusual for people not to drive, I have 4 siblings, only 2 of us driving and both of us that drive were mid 20s by the time we passed.

girlfriend44 · 06/01/2023 17:44

Just give a humorous reply and say only people mad.

Chill out it's just a question.

MasterBeth · 06/01/2023 17:53

Do you drive? sounds like the kind of question a very old, very posh person would ask. Like "do you drive or do you have a driver?"

I can remember my (not posh) Nan asking me "will you learn to drive?" when I was a kid and thinking "why would I not learn to drive?"

Driving is a basic life skill adults should learn, surely, if they can afford to, in Wetsren societies.

onyttig · 06/01/2023 18:03

It does depend on the context really.

my answer is that I can drive. But I do not drive. Because I don’t own a car. Nor do I intend to.

Ludo19 · 06/01/2023 19:23

Oh online dating. Well "do you drive" is the least of your worries.

I got asked in his opening question/first ever message was "can you gut a fish and do you wear your hair in a ponytail?"

Aquarius1234 · 06/01/2023 19:34

He replied he just wondered as not everybody does and didn't until 30.

Why is it a crappy question?
And how does it tell you you aren't compatible?

I'd love to know what combination of answers would've made you his perfect woman 😂

ToWhitToWhoo · 06/01/2023 20:03

I don't mind people just asking, no. I can't drive because of a disability, and if people are nasty to me about that, I do find it very hurtful. But not just asking the question.

Why? What if you live in an inner city? What if you have a disability/learning difficulty/illness that is not compatible with driving? What if you have alcohol or drug problems and can't trust yourself not to drive inebriated? What if you are concerned about the environment? What if you have passed your test but just don't feel like you are naturally a safe driver? Maybe we wouldn't have so many fatal accidents if that one was accepted, because no, actually everyone shouldn't drive.

So, not a “random” stranger at all. It is somebody you have specifically connected with via OLD.

A few short emails..

OP posts:
tiredmama23 · 06/01/2023 20:25

I've been asked far more offensive questions on OLD so this wouldn't phase me 😂

tiredmama23 · 06/01/2023 20:25

*faze!! Dreadful typo 😂

TimeForMeToF1y · 06/01/2023 20:28

Every time you think the list of nonsense that people get upset about is full up another entry comes along

Life must be so stresful for the endlessly offended

Ludo19 · 06/01/2023 20:33

@AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie I know! I wasn't telling him yes to both, think of the next questions I'd have been asked 🙄 that of course was tame in comparison to some other messages you get 😆

I think the right answer would be "I only tie my hair in a ponytail when I gut a fish"

LunaRegis · 06/01/2023 21:20

It annoys me when people assume that everyone drives. Probably because I no longer drive. I recently met several people in their 90s that drive, I felt both respect & a bit shocked.

Ludo19 · 06/01/2023 21:23

@whatwouldAnnaDelveydo yeah I thought about replying that but I didn't want to encourage the crazy

Purpleberet · 06/01/2023 21:30

It wouldn’t annoy me but if I got a sense that they were going to make judgements about it then I would find that annoying.

Although I can drive, I don’t drive because I don’t have a car. Mainly because I can’t justify the cost of a having one. I find it a little frustrating that lots of drivers just assume everyone has a car

Aquarius1234 · 06/01/2023 21:41

I drive but only local towns. I use trains otherwise.
In the past I've often got the train to meet new people. It shouldn't be an issue dating someone that doesn't drive.
As long as you can both meet at said city or town without needing a lift there should be no issue.
