Downton abbey Mandela effect?

Didjesuspoop · 04/01/2023 21:07

This is such a small, insignificant thing but it’s really bugging me so just wondering if anyone else can remember the same thing! Ages ago I remember watching a trailer for downton abbey (I thought it could have been season 5) and the music over it was a female acoustic cover to the times they are a changing. I have searched high and low on YouTube and Google for this trailer and watched every trailer for every season of downton and that song does not appear in any of them! Anyone else?! Maybe I’m thinking of a totally different tv program or maybe I’m remembering wrong?

YABU - I’ve never seen that trailer with that song
YANBU - I remember this trailer! (Please help me find it)

@Jourdain11

Hobson's Choice is a phrase that predated the play by several hundred years.

Also, the Ottomans were always known as the Turks in the popular mind, even though that wasn't a strictly accurate label. Sometimes the entire empire was personified as The Turk in popular parlance.

'Ottoman' referred to furniture, and still does.

OP, was the version of the song you heard sung by Judy Collins?

EmmaEmerald · 05/01/2023 04:36

Sometimes people post queries like this and have the wrong song

could it be this?

How is it harsh? It's just accurate.

Unlike OP's memory.

I bet you’re fun at parties.

Person enjoying drink and convivial atmosphere: shares anecdote.

BrownEyedGhoul: no, fuckwit, you couldn’t be more wrong. Or stupid.

rattlinbog · 04/01/2023 23:49

Such a harsh response!!

Both harsh and (embarrassingly for dickhead know it all poster) wrong, as pp said the first uk trailer used "every breath you take"
Plus if you think that's bad don't youtube the Australian trailers (use "blow" by kesha amongst others presumably in an attempt to try and get a younger audience!)

Didjesuspoop · 05/01/2023 05:38

@BrownEyedGhoul definitely not the crown but thank you. Have you seen any of the downton abbey trailers? None of the songs that I can think of from trailers are from the era of downton! For example, gabrielle aplin - salvation.. she was born a couple hundred years or so after downton was set :)

Thank you everyone who responded, I think I’ll just accept I’m misremembering, either thinking of a different song for a trailer or a different show altogether! I was just pondering the other night when I was awake feeding the little one so was only a light hearted thread really :)

Fair enough, didn't know that about the phrase. Not British.

He wouldn't have been the Turkish Ambassador however, as Turkey wasn't an independent country, so I don't think that's inaccurate.

Since a whole bunch people have now pointed out that I'm stupid and pointless, I'll stop posting now. I'm actually never going to post anything on MN again, so I won't be troubling anyone with my general thickness, idiocy and incomprehension in the future. Good to know that I'm a waste of space, at least I won't be under any delusions.

FWIW, the people posting here are real and have feelings and I'm going through a really difficult time personally at the moment and came on these threads looking for some light relief when I was feeling really anxious and low. Now I see that the reason things are difficult is obviously because I'm thick and unintelligent, so at least I'll know that this is just what I deserve.

@Jourdain11 you have not been exhausting! You’re one of my favourite types of mumsnetters ❤️ im sorry you’re feeling really anxious and low, I’m right there with you at the moment! Post partum hormones are ruining me 😢 please feel free to to message me if you need a chat!

OP could it have been a trailer that includes downton as part of it, like a sky movies trailer that included the downton movie (along with other movies)? I've seen trailers featuring downton in before (one this Christmas so recently) although I don't remember the music!

You had the bad luck to encounter one of the late-night MN dickheads (Lalawhatsit, not mathanxiety, to be clear) - please don't take it personally Smile The thread was fun till they came along, along with BrownEyedFunsucker.

I (mis) remember an entire ITV miniseries that I watched with my mum in the 90s. It was based on a novel that I had also read. It starred Anthony Andrews as the male lead and I remember thinking he wasn’t right as the character was meant to be a dark saturnine type. But I have never been able to find any mention of it online and it does not appear in AA’s IMDB or Wiki entry. Also the lead female character had an unusual name which was pronounced differently from the way I heard it in my head while reading the book!

Thank you, that's so kind! I am sorry to stropping, I'm just having a horrible week. Post-partum hormones plus NO SLEEP is such a tough time, you have my utmost sympathy! I remember when mine were 15 months and newborn (poor planning) and I spent one night genuinely contemplating whether it would be a good idea to join a Silent Order just for some peace and quiet 🤫 😊

She wqas born over a hundered years in our future? Impressive.

Have you actualy seen Downton Abbey? Or know whay year it is?

LahLahLoopsy · 05/01/2023 23:29

No, that's an example of you explaining how my understanding of one word was incorrect. And in actual fact, it wasn't.

Are you really unable to grasp that in order to MANsplain, it is necessary tobe a MAN?

Jourdain11 · 05/01/2023 23:44

For the avoidance of any doubt.... the poster who I felt was mansplaining (just a teeny little bit and tone cannot be gauged so well in writing) is a man.

And further to that, not playing tonight, sorry! Wouldn't want you to waste your time on someone who can't understand any of your words, in any case.

Mean! But Gabrielle Aplin, born 1992, 80 years after first episode of Downton is set... the point about non-contemporaneous songs still stands, I reckon. Although the young Lady Mary did think she was a particularly shocking and modern type.

Kinnorafron · 05/01/2023 23:52

I hadn't heard of the Mandela effect - so I learned something (not from the bickering about what it is on here, but by Googling it) so thanks.

I was literally just coming on to point out keyaniser who you were referring to in that post is a man

I'm not quite sure why lahlahloopsy has felt the need to be so nasty to you in this thread on a very lighthearted subject

Jacks45 · 05/01/2023 23:56

I was just about to say the same re the obvious reason for the mansplaining comments. (Maybe they are really unable to grasp that there are MEN's on the internet?) 🤔

Jourdain11 · 05/01/2023 23:59

Haha, when mens touch the keypad to type on Mumsnet, they obviously get zapped, glow green and start vibrating, and a klaxon goes off. Man alert, man alert!

naemates · 06/01/2023 00:04

It's still not the Mandela Effect

Letitrainletitrainletitrain · 06/01/2023 00:06

I've heard MNHQ have a drinking game where they drink a shot of gin every time someone posts 'man here/just to give a male perspective' etc and two shots everytime someone posts 'why are there men/childless people etc on MUMSnet'

PriamFarrl · 06/01/2023 00:09

I’ve got no idea but I’m amazed at the amount of people with no idea what a cover of a song is.

The original song, The Times They Are A Changing was written and performed by Bob Dylan. Anyone other than the original artist who performs the song is covering it.

Jourdain11 · 06/01/2023 00:14

Yep.

I'm not sure if the Downton theme composer (can't remember the name and can't be bothered to look it up) arranged the vocal version himself. If so, I guess it's technically a vocal arrangement. If not, it's still a vocal arrangement but is also a vocal cover. If the vocals were an exact replication of the original melody line and everything else remained the same, it would be a transcription.

We all know that, it wasn't disputed. It wasn't even mentioned.

An instrumental is not a song. The first person to sing a song is not doing a cover, are they? It's not a cover version when the original composer adds words to his own creation.
