The government? Where is the leadership? The reassurance that the problem is being addressed with urgency? Cobra meetings? Horrendous stories coming out of A&E departments right now.

Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary today announced on twitter that people should download the Couch to 5k app to reduce pressure on the NHS.

Do your fucking job, Steve. And Rishi, show some leadership. You bloody wanted this job so badly, where have you gone?

I predict the government and right wing press will appear, point at some immigrants, blame them for all the countries poverty and collapsing public services and their voters will nod along sagely.

Iam4eels · 02/01/2023 23:42

They could also standardise GP organisation. My GP is amazing. They're a multipractice group and operate a doctor first system. You call up on the day you want to be seen, whether it's minor or urgent, and the reception staff take your details as well as a description of the issue. You can also do this via online form if you don't want to call. You then get a call back from the person best placed to help you - doctor, nurse, podiatrist, midwife, etc. If they can resolve it over the phone, then they do. I've had antibiotics for tonsillitis entirely from sending them a photograph of my throat. They provide information on red flags to watch out for (e.g., if it doesn't resolve with the antibiotics in 2-3 days or if your symptoms worsen then call us, if we're closed call this number for the out of hours hub, etc). I can order repeat prescriptions online and there is a dedicated team for this. If they do need to see you face to face then they see you same day, if there are no appointments at your home surgery they will fit you in at one of the other surgeries. They run a walk-in centre on evenings and weekends, cycled on a rota between their three largest surgeries, for practice patients to see a nurse or GP. It works and it can be done.

Elfholloway · 02/01/2023 23:43

I absolutely agree, op. The Tories are quietly dismantling this country - if it were the Labour party behind this endless turmoil they would be being absolutely destroyed by the press.

That argument has worn thin. A blind man on a galloping horse could see that the NHS would collapse without immigrants.

JanglyBeads · 02/01/2023 23:48

Train more pharmacists isn't going to work, they've been systematically underfunded for years so that many are closing (for good) every week at the moment. I kid you not.

user1471453601 · 02/01/2023 23:49

@catandcoffee you are right, up to a point. The point is the fact that some people in some areas (like me) are getting an excellent service, but at what cost to individual nurses and doctors? It's clear to me, despite the excellent service I've been getting for the last eight months that the NHSis on its knees, and this government is doing fuck all to help it. Nurses don't choose to go on strike lightly. They would only do so in extreme circumstances.

Zebracat · 02/01/2023 23:51

My daughter is a doctor, currently on mat leave. She’s terrified of going back .The system is totally broken, but when people die, it’s individuals who get blamed. I am just praying we all stay well.

Lots of people in hospital currently with covid and with flu. Were they vaccinated? Were they eligible for vaccination?

Could we have a big vaccination push instead of tweets about jogging?

Problem is, anyone who is eligible for their jabs and who wants it have had it. The government resorted to fear tactics and punishment for not having COVID vaccines, instead of taking on board peoples concerns and reassuring then.....just another thing on the long list of things they got completely wrong.

The government don't care because they will never be affected by the state of the NHS, so they won't do anything about it. Absolute fuckers, I hate them!!!

pleaseletmesleeptonight · 02/01/2023 23:56

@Endlesssummer2022 I agree totally, he's a lying shitbag with blood on his hands.

He also just works for for the banks, he's a puppet, put in place. He's not a real leader.

Headlines for days. Try not to drive there will be no ambulance if you crash. Dont go out.

Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

Who is marching? Because I want to go with you.

My family and I (in Canada) were just talking about this. Where are the protests??? Bungled Brexit, insane energy prices, double digit inflation, higher rates of COVID deaths than in most of the western world, the NHS on its knees… in France, this would cause a shortage of tyres for the number that were being burned in the streets! I understand the stiff upper lip to an extent, but enough is enough, Britons need to find their rage and actually channel it in a public and organized way. The current government is such a shambles, and there seems to be such a high tolerance level for its incompetence. It’s truly shocking to outsiders.

kafkascastle · 02/01/2023 23:38

So that’s alright then? You’re ok so sod everyone one else? What a stupid comment.

Don't be ridiculous.
I was making a valid point that some areas of the NHS work better than others.

We're all aware the Government don't give a shit but just pointing out there are still amazing parts that work well.

And I made sure the NHS workers were thanked for the great job they did.

Bluekerfuffle · 02/01/2023 23:59

They will be if they need emergency care won’t they? As far as I know there is no private option for emergencies.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/01/2023 00:01

Wait, come on OP you don’t seriously expect them to come out and handle this mess do you? It’s an absolute disaster. The NHS is in ruins and this next Covid wave may end up being the worst one yet. You know it must be bad when the news are running headlines advising us to stay home if sick and wear masks again.

The country is in a dire mess.

slipperypenguin · 03/01/2023 00:04

I've broken my foot. I broke it last year and this is a further fracture on top of that. I went to A&E last week and after waiting 4 hours they announced it would be a minimum 12 hour wait for everyone as they were declaring an incident as the out of hours had all had to close.

I can't bare to go back. It's now a week later and I'm sat here with a very visibly and obviously broken foot with no idea where to go unless I'm willing to go back and sit for another 12 hours.

Me too. I’ve never been involved in a protest but this is one I would definitely join. I still think there are too many people who won’t hear a word against the NHS and would take it as an attack on the staff rather than the awful state of the whole organisation and the government’s lack of interest.

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2023 00:05

Problem is, anyone who is eligible for their jabs and who wants it have had it.

I’m not sure that’s entirely true, they haven’t got around to my DS’s school with the flu jab yet, for example, and I know people eligible for the covid jab or booster who couldn’t have it at the time due to having covid and then didn’t get round to it.

It might be useful to know how many of those in hospital were eligible but not vaccinated.

And would it be possible to extend eligibility for the vaccines to reduce spread? Some people certainly want e.g. the covid jab but are under 50, or the flu jab but can’t afford it. My school pays for the flu vaccine for staff, could this be rolled out to all school staff?

I don’t know. But I have no idea whether the government is even discussing this sort of thing, or indeed anything.

8 hour's is the longest I have had to wait with DD. But I have heard of others waiting 12-16 hours for MH crisis team. Only for them to be told they're not high risk and get sent home. Only once we've had to queue in an ambulance. But they were waiting for a bay in resus for her as a precondition. They always struggle to find a bed for her though.

Have had to go to bigger city hospitals though when away from home. We did have to queue for an ambulance. But the one time she did get admitted. They never even had a recliner chair for carer's. She needs someone to look after her at least one to one all the time. And the nurses obviously can't do that.

Opa · 03/01/2023 00:06

They must have the media on side at the minute because why is no one questioning where the government is?

Rishi has been too busy with photo ops in a soup kitchen suggesting homeless people get jobs in the business sector Hmm

To think a large percentage of incompetent voters (Brexit and Tory) actually willingly voted for this mess and will continue to do so in the future too.

Britain is rapidly declining, the younger generations are utterly fucked- you’d have to be out of your mind to deliberately bring a baby into this shitshow now.

They’ll keep silent till the Doctors and Nurses strike. And then they’ll blame the collapse and backlog on said strike.

They are utter utter fuckers.

Christmascracker0 · 03/01/2023 00:10

NHS Scotland is the same, it’s so so bad. The highlands is particularly bad. Patients are being discharged early and family encouraged to look after them if spaces in community hospitals aren’t available!

Noonesperfect · 03/01/2023 00:10

Unfortunately I believe the tories want the NHS to fail so we all have to pay for our care. They make me sick! I think it's really frightening.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 03/01/2023 00:18

The Health Minister and the Prime Minister need to be frog marched to every A&E to see for themselves the state the NHS is in now. Our health trust has been declared at critical point. It is scary.
It is disgraceful.
