To think this charity deserve prosecution for being so bloody stupid?

Just seen this in the news and went down a rabbit hole reading the whole story plus comments on their FB.

They took a bunch of young kids on a frozen lake (apparently without parental consent) and tried to justify it as a safety lesson despite clearly having no understanding themselves of the actual dangers. For example they're claiming the entire lake was frozen over with 2ft thick ice - no, it definitely wasn't, not in the south west of the UK, it's just not that cold in this country even in the recent cold snap. That's just impossible.

Their comments on their FB page are shockingly blasé and they've even been liking other people's comments saying that vaccines are a bigger danger to children than this was Hmm

Just can't believe anyone would be so stupid less than a week after the tragedy in Solihull Sad and then to take to social media calling it a knee jerk overreaction to suspend their license until an investigation is complete shows a total lack of regard for the most basic H&S or risk assessment processes. I actually hope their registration to look after children is revoked by whoever has such powers!

You can tell they had no idea what they were doing from the statement 'If the ice had broken they could have stood up and waded out'.

I live in a place where winters are freezing. Nobody with experience of ice would ever be so confident about people simply dropping straight into freezing water with no toppling over, and no shock from the cold. When ice breaks you lose your balance and fall in sideways or head first - unpredictably, and into water that immediately takes your breath away, causing you to gasp, which very often leads to drowning.

@ClareBlue Sorry that is an oversimplification.

Better than this porkie you posted
Once initial ice has formed following days do not even need to drop below zero for the ice to thicken further.

If it’s above zero, the ice is going to be melting, not thickening.

Yep. A child wade through 2ft of ice? Impossible. Just like the ice being 2ft thick is also an impossible claim.

ClareBlue · 03/01/2023 01:00

And if you look on official sites in Norway you will see that recreational frozen bodies of water are tested with drills and other equipment for thickness and type of ice. The white ice not being safe due to unevenness and only blue and black ice greater than 4 inches acceptable and when daily temps are around - 6 everyday. And their advice is not to go on untested ice and never assume it is safe until tested.

This concept literally negates the entire evolutionary benefit of ice being less dense than water. If this fact were true then there would literally be no life on earth. It’s such an astoundingly stupid thing to say.

@FeinCuroxiVooz it says they don’t mitigate LOW risks. Did you intentionally misrepresent that? Not that I’m supporting anything this charity have done here.

It actually scares me a bit that some of the people on this thread may have children. You can see how tragedies do occur when you have (presumably) fully grown adults saying some of the things being said in here about how this wasn’t such a big deal. When people jump down the throats of those who ‘blame the parents’ maybe they shouldn’t if this is what some parents are like.

What this charity did just beggars belief. In the one week that parents all over the country were sitting down their children and warning them to never ever go on frozen water they actively took children onto some.

Of course it is. I'm not going to reproduce the whole science and as I said, you can Google it.
The fact is that the temps we had leading up to the event will not have lead to 24 inches of frozen water in the lake.

If the ice was as thick as they say, it is not going to crack. If it had cracked slightly you get some water coming onto the ice. No one is going to be chest high in icy water or have their head under water. These are 11 year olds.

And comparing this to powdery snow is insane. You obviously have never been taught how to walk safely in powdery snow.

So were we all imagining those children who died after falling through ice in Solihull (which was somewhat colder than Gloucestershire)? According to you, they couldn't have fallen under the surface of the water when the ice cracked - and Babbs Mill Lake is also a very shallow lake.

If the parents gave permission then I don’t see an issue.

The lake was shallow and the ice was 2ft deep, and they were with trained staff. This would be normal in Norway.

Narvik will drop to -20 this week. Not in the slightest bit comparable with Gloucestershire.

BradfordGirl · 03/01/2023 01:09

Babbs Mill was far deeper. And I said IF there was 2 feet of ice in a 3 feet lake then an 11 year old could not end up chest deep in water.

SnowlayRoundabout · 03/01/2023 01:10

@hickorydickorydock89, that is an utterly disgusting statement to make about bereaved parents. You should be ashamed of yourself.

sazza76 · 03/01/2023 01:11

I think that they were in the wrong to carry out this activity for all the reasons others have already mentioned. I feel that whoever is running their facebook page is making a big mistake with their public attitude to the fact people have complained. I understand that they are passionate about the project and it seems that the group has done some fantastic work in the years its been running but in the face of strong objections they should be willing to listen and take onboard they may have made a mistake on this occassion.

I’ve already posted the depth of Babbs Mill Park Lake. It’s an artificial lake and it’s 2-3ft deep, so either shallower or the same depth.

@Whydidimarrythis You posted someone saying the lake was 3 feet. This is a photo of police wading through the lake near the edge. It is obvious that it is deeper than 3 feet.
