Smoking outside front door - why?

Purchased and moved into a new build development. Quite a few council houses on estate. No issue at all, all seem nice, but I don’t want to ask this question to my neighbours but am curious…

why do council house tenants stand outside their front doors to smoke? There are no front gardens, so almost on pavement for all to see. They’re all semi’s and have private gardens so could smoke outside in private gardens but all seem to do it outside their front doors.

again, just curious, not judging. AIBU to ask if there’s a logical reason?

Opportunity to chat with passing neighbours? Better views/people watching?

A more interesting view perhaps, something to watch with people going about their business. Possibly the closest door to where they sit inside.

Isahlo · 01/01/2023 22:28

People don’t want to smoke in their own house, nor do they want to smoke in their garden when kids ply

why is it council tennants? Where we live the smoke outside your front door girl lives in an executive home

userxx · 01/01/2023 22:28

So the private tenants and owners smoke in their back gardens or is it only the council tenants who smoke ?

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/01/2023 22:28

It's in the contract when they offer you a council property.

Hillrunning · 01/01/2023 22:30

Various reasons I suppose. Perhaps they want to keep the back garden for children, perhaps they like seeing the comings and goings on the road? Perhaps some people had no garden previously and so just do it out of habit. Perhaps the dun is at the front door? Is it so hard for you to think of these things?

SchnauzerEyebrows · 01/01/2023 22:30

So home owners don't smoke?! Both my parents smoked when I was growing up and they owned our home???

lemmein · 01/01/2023 22:31

My smoker friends all smoke on the front doorstep - when I smoked I did it out the back (cos I'm antisocial!)

None are council tenants.

Vallmo47 · 01/01/2023 22:32

My husband vapes in the garden when it’s dry but if it’s raining there’s no shelter from the rain so he stands underneath the little porch bit at the front.

In true Mn fashion I want to point out that I don’t think it’s necessary to say that these people are from the “council houses” on your estate. People are people, never met a person whose fart smells of roses. :) I’m curious what difference it would have made to say “why do some people who live on my housing estate choose to smoke outside the front, rather in the privacy of their own garden?”
It does sound a bit like judgment to me.

Mortimermay · 01/01/2023 22:33

You say you're not judging, but you are. There could be any number of reasons, which I'm sure you could come up with yourself if you spent a bit of time thinking about it.

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2023 22:34

I bet these smokers sit on their front step in the summer .op you are In for a real treat op 😂

It definitely isn’t.

Justme10 · 01/01/2023 22:36

I only smoke out the front when it's raining because there's shelter or at night because the light is better. Otherwise I go out the back and I don't live in a council house.

UrsulaPandress · 01/01/2023 22:37

I don’t know how they can afford to smoke. Cheeky fuckers living in a council house.

DuchessOfDisco · 01/01/2023 22:38

If it’s a new build development, it’s highly unlikely to be council houses. Council don’t build them any more, it’s all been privatised don’t ya know.
I mean if you are going to a judgemental arsehole, you might as well get the terminology right

RewildingAmbridge · 01/01/2023 22:39

Do they have little porches without walls? The new builds near us all seem to, and it would make sense for shelter.
Other than that I don't know how you know someone else's home ownership status.

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 22:39

People paying gazillions on a mortgage can't afford to smoke, so it's only people in social housing can afford it?

LBFseBrom · 01/01/2023 22:40

I've never seen people regularly standing outside the front of their homes, smoking and casually socialising. If I lived by those who were regularly out the front, I would find that intimidating and wouldn't want to leave my house!

Why on earth can they not smoke in the back garden if smoking is prohibited indoors?

healthadvice123 · 01/01/2023 22:40

My brother and sil were just smoking outside front on my mums as garden is muddy and front is dry as driveway
Not a council house
I also live on a council estate and anyone who smokes here must do either in house or back garden as I don't see anyone standing out the front smoking
