Smoking outside front door - why?

Purchased and moved into a new build development. Quite a few council houses on estate. No issue at all, all seem nice, but I don’t want to ask this question to my neighbours but am curious…

why do council house tenants stand outside their front doors to smoke? There are no front gardens, so almost on pavement for all to see. They’re all semi’s and have private gardens so could smoke outside in private gardens but all seem to do it outside their front doors.

again, just curious, not judging. AIBU to ask if there’s a logical reason?

Plus they can watch the massive TV through the living room window.

If they're smart (the tenants, not the TVs) they can stare through the OP's living room window, thus saving money on electricity and being able to spend more on fags.

Catterpillarwithconverse · 01/01/2023 22:50

They probs also smoke out the back too but you wouldn't see

@DuchessOfDisco council / ha do still build housing

Housing Associations do, but very rarely councils. And a HA is technically sometimes still classed as private social housing and falls under slightly different rules to council homes (right to buy doesn’t exist for HA like it does for council for example)

oh and btw, I was just being a bit tongue and cheek with the OP

They're a nightmare for the butts though

Fabulous 👌

coolpattern · 01/01/2023 22:59

We all know which were the designated affordable housing/council houses from the estate map.

anyway, lots of valid points as to why. Carry on please

My mum is a smoker and the reason she doesn't smoke out her back is because her & her neighbours doors are very close and the smoke would be blowing into his house - door open in the spring/summer and always out in his garden come rain or shine. So she smokes out her front. Not a council house but is a street mixed with council/bought & privately rented.

Cas112 · 01/01/2023 23:01

This is the oddest thread. I know people who own homes who also smoke at the front door. They just don't want to smoke inside?

Hahah I’ve literally opened this thread while smoking at my front door. We paid £750k for our house ten years ago.

It’s raining. There’s no easy shelter in the back garden. There’s a porch out the front. That’s it. That’s the answer.

ghislaine · 01/01/2023 23:07

We live next to a house rented by 20-somethings who like to stand outside the front of their house and smoke. I once asked them not to because the smoke drifts into my asthmatic child’s bedroom. There’s been a significant negative shift in relations since so there must be a compelling reason to smoke out the front and not the back.

Sohungryyyy · 01/01/2023 23:12

🤣

CliffordDanger · 01/01/2023 23:14

They'll be on a tag that means they're only allowed to smoke in certain areas. If they smoke in the garden or inside they'll get recalled to prison.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

KateofGhent · 01/01/2023 23:16

It's not just council tenants, but people do not like the smell of smoke on their decor & furnishings. I believe you are not allowed to foster now if you smoke. Speaking of someone who lived in a private rented flat, one of the landlord's rules was no smoking, in case the smoke alarms went off.

allboysherebutme · 01/01/2023 23:17

When my husband smoked, I used to make him go outside, I would not want that smell over my furnishings, dirty filthy habit. X

Annoyingwurringnoise · 01/01/2023 23:18

Give the snobby curtain twitcher neighbours somet to talk about.

frylite · 01/01/2023 23:19

You have little to worry about.

neighboursmustliveon · 01/01/2023 23:21

It's not just council house residents that do this. A few of my neighbours smoke but have kids and/or a partner who doesn't smoke and some just don't want their home to smell of smoke. So they smoke outside 🤷🏽‍♀️

What makes you think only council house tenants do this.. what an odd thing to think.

But anyway maybe their 14 kids by 22 different dads . Are playing in the garden and they don't want the smoke near them.

But if your happy for tarquin to inhale your smoke that's down to you

Mamai90 · 01/01/2023 23:26

I vape at my front door because if I open my back door the dog will want go out and will expect the ball thrown for him for 20 mins every time I want a smoke. So unless I actually have time to do that then I take a few puffs at the front door.

Generalstuff42023 · 01/01/2023 23:27

DuchessOfDisco · 01/01/2023 22:38

If it’s a new build development, it’s highly unlikely to be council houses. Council don’t build them any more, it’s all been privatised don’t ya know.
I mean if you are going to a judgemental arsehole, you might as well get the terminology right

That's not true. I'm in a new build council house. There are many being built. Although slowly

Mamai90 · 01/01/2023 23:28

Oh and I don't live in a council house but I think that's neither here nor there.

Generalstuff42023 · 01/01/2023 23:31

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/01/2023 22:41

I bet the goat smokes as well.

Probably smokes weed

BashfulClam · 01/01/2023 23:35

My brother goes out the front or otherwise he need to open the sliding glass door to his conservatory then the French door to the garden. He can just open the front door straight up.

SunshineLoving · 01/01/2023 23:37

To watch the world go by? There's more interesting goings on at the front of a house than the back.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 01/01/2023 23:43

Start to worry when an old sofa appears at their front doors for them to sit on 😂
