Did you have the baby yourself?

I was at a family party yesterday and my sisters SIL asked me in relation to my baby 'did you have him yourself?' I looked at her and said what? She said 'or you know a section'

I don't think she meant to be rude but FFS I DID HAVE HIM MYSELF. I didn't go into the hospital and pick out a baby. I grew him for 9 months, went for countless appointments due to GD, and him being transverse, he moved at the last min so they induced and after 3 days they went with a section.

I'm not sure what my AIBU is. AIBU that she implied having a section wasn't having him?

It's backward to hold on to some turn of phrase from your heritage/culture? Really?

People do this also when they say "did you feed him yourself ", ie they mean did you breastfeed, as though bottle feeding isn't also feeding the baby yourself. Strange.

My parents say this. It's like they are scared of the word 'breast'. It's weird and really annoying.

What an awful thing to say to a new mum. Many congrats OPFlowers

Before I had kids I'd once said I'd like to give birth "normally" instead of section. I was so scared of a section (I've since copped it's probably a phobia because it's completely irrational) that it never occurred to me that "normal" would be offensive. What a gobshite. I obvs went back to the woman I said it to (having given birth) and apologised and also acknowledged there's nothing normal about any of it.

She sounds rude and stupid. I would have said “no, l found him under a bush in the garden”. Stupid questions need stupid answers

tiredpuppymum · 31/12/2022 16:52

'That's a very clumsy way to ask what kind of delivery I had'

Fleurdaisy · 31/12/2022 16:55

I can’t ever remember asking anyone how they gave birth. Why would I need to know ? Oh what a beautiful baby, maybe you look well are all that’s needed.
Very bizarre question.

MajesticWhine · 31/12/2022 16:58

A quick answer would have been "No I found him by the side of the road."

Ayeaken · 31/12/2022 17:02

When I read the title I thought she meant did you use a surrogate lol.

Both my DC were born via c-section. I personally wouldn't say I'd given birth but I definitley 'had them myself' 🤣

LBFseBrom · 31/12/2022 17:04

A bad choice of words but I doubt she gave it much thought.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 31/12/2022 17:24

Could have been worse, she could have said out through the sunroof which makes me want to punch people (and I didn't even have sections!) It's one of those things people say when they think they're being funny, I have a large family and the number of people who have asked me "is your TV broken?" and then guffawed Hmm

Your SIL sounds awkward rather than ignorant, maybe? When I had to call into my office post maternity leave, with a newborn having a nap in a pram, a colleague said "awww....when do their eyes open?" I assumed he meant "when will she wake up?" but no, he genuinely believed babies didn't open their eyes until some time after birth. When pressed upon the matter he said he hadn't really thought about it but assumed they maybe didn't open their eyes until they were six weeks or so...

(He was hired when I was on leave, I didn't hire him and he didn't last long)

MiddleParking · 31/12/2022 17:28

All of these suggested retorts would make the sayer thereof sound both really unpleasant and completely socially incompetent.

ILoveeCakes · 31/12/2022 17:28

"Could have been worse, she could have said out through the sunroof"

Could also go for Macbeth: From his mother's womb untimely ripped

MollyRover · 31/12/2022 17:34

Is English her first language? Someone asked me if I was going to have the baby myself (same thing, natural birth or section) but she spoke English as a second language.

Had a similar remark made by ExH's boss when he announced that I was pregnant.

"So, you've had sex then?!"

Wasn't quite sure how to answer that one then!

What a weird thing for his boss to say!
