To cut yule log longitudinally?

Nimbostratus100 · 28/12/2022 11:32

Cut in half longitudinally, cut in half again longitudinally, so you now have 4 long pieces that each begin in one icing covered end, and stretch to the other icing covered end, then cut across the middle.

4 pieces, each with one quarter of an icing covered end and one eighth of the central cake

Surely that is the only way to do it? I was getting funny looks, and comments that yule log pieces are normally disc shape, but how can we each get a nice balance of cake and icing if you cut it all transverse?

I would be worried about getting each long slice the same thickness along the length

Plus because its round, the edge slices are not the same size as the middle slices

Its a wrong'un all round OP

ChessieFL · 28/12/2022 11:34

I’ve never known anybody cut a yule log that way! Always horizontal.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/12/2022 11:35

That's kind of brilliant but also weird.

Fifthtimelucky · 28/12/2022 11:36

I always cut the end pieces that way, so that everyone gets their fair share of the ends, which have the most icing on.

The middle section gets cut in discs though.

PoppyBlunt · 28/12/2022 11:36

How do you cut an unsliced loaf of bread OP?
Big sarnies 😂

UnicornMumcraft · 28/12/2022 11:38

Nooo, the person who gets the job of cutting it (me) gets the lovely end piece but it all needs to be cut into discs.

Im not quite sure I follow the premise of the problem you’re trying to solve.

Yule log has icing round the outside, and icing in the middle too, doesn’t it? It’s a rolled cake. So each ‘disc’ has the perfect and equal balance of icing and cake, because it’s literally designed that way.

The end pieces are different, sure - but not enough to murder the poor thing like you did!

Toddlerteaplease · 28/12/2022 11:40

YABU and a barbarian, why would you do such a thing!

Dinneronmybfpillow · 28/12/2022 11:40

This is the sort of person who rolls up a slice of pizza then cuts it with a knife and fork.

This. Totally this.

Saltywalruss · 28/12/2022 11:42

Your way is perfect if four people are sharing it !

BabyFour2023 · 28/12/2022 11:43

Jesus those pieces would be too big for 1 person! That’s definitely not the correct way to serve Yule log.

YouremywifenowTubs · 28/12/2022 11:43

YABU.

Yule logs are single serve.

UABU. Its the week between Christmas and New Year. I'm full of cheese and don't even know what day it is. Now is not the time for quarters, eigths, and words like 'longitudinally'. Just cut yourself however much you want and munch away quietly while I'm watching Call the Midwife.

The end pieces you could cut like that a bit longer if people are really going to fight over them but otherwise there should be a good balance in each slice. If you’re eating it all in one go do what you like but if not then it could go all dry and crumble away surely. I remember the first time my husband cut a slice of Christmas cake though and I was so shocked. He cuts it like a slice of sponge cake, segments of the circle, rather than in little rectangular pieces but actually it makes it better he says, everyone gets a bit of edge icing. Each to their own, you do what makes your family happy OP :)

Perfect response. They are genuinely getting that way though!!

This made me laugh.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 28/12/2022 11:48

I think I'm missunderstanding.
Doesn't that mean that someone gets an icing covered near total edge and minimal cake?

To cut yule log longitudinally?
AreOttersJustWetCats · 28/12/2022 11:49

What kind of savagery is this? It's not even an easier way to cut it!!! No. Just no.
