Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

There’s a simple way to be 100% certain. Go into your router settings and check the log of sites visited. If there is activity on the days you were away - there is your evidence!

How would they know the wifi password?

inappropriateraspberry · 29/12/2022 08:55

@GrasstrackGirl
it's often on a sticker on the router somewhere. If you're in the house, you can access the Wi-Fi pretty easily.

Surely the first thing most people do is to change the password the router comes with?

Gensola · 29/12/2022 09:01

@SoupDragon I have never changed my wifi password - wouldn’t have occurred to me!

Norfolkungood · 29/12/2022 09:06

Enjoy the rest of your holiday OP. I'm sure you'll be able to tell when you get home if someone has been in your house. So many things could give it away. Maybe the neighbour went in to check if the house was ready for her guests!

Things in the Cotswolds have changed since I was a girl! 😹

Indeed!

It was all bazookas and rocket launchers in my day. 😄

Common sense is to change the default password.

The OP was home all the time, but wanted her mum to visit for a big surprise party for a significant birthday. Mum is an avid Mumsnet fan, so the entire thread was an elaborate ruse to throw her off guard.
Right now, whole family are enjoying Prosecco and cake.

Thank God!

I've been worried sick!

Emotionalsupportviper · 29/12/2022 09:12

(Should have added)

😂

(I am also hoping that nothing dreadful has kicked off)

Whenever a poster takes a little while to update - the thread always turns into a MN version of The Traitors finale.

Agree.

And when push comes to shove, while it is very satisfying to get an update, this is someone's life, and they may just not want to reveal the denoument - apart from anything else, it might be very outing.

EG: " . . . and then the police helicopter dropped three armed SAS men through the skylight and they forced the CFs out of the bedroom they's barricaded themselves into using CS gas, Agent Orange and a recording of Cilla Black singing "Step inside love" but they'd digitally changed the words to "Step outside scum". All the neighbour's cousins' children have been taken into care and the parents dragged out of the house in handcuffs and pyjamas. We have decided to adopt the dog who was obviously innocent in all of this." <posts photos of charming cockerpoo wearing a Christmas jumper>

And then umpteen MNers turn to their husbands at the breakfast table and say "OMYGOD! That Derek and Sheila at number 36 let their cousins stay in Maureen's house while Maureen was away! THAT'S why there were armed police surrounding their greenhouse last night! Doesn't surprise me. I've always said Derek's eyes were too close together . . . Oh - what a lovely little dog!"

Sorry for late reply (partner and myself* *have gotten that awful coughing/sickness bug thats going around). My mum and sis/bil called in to my house yesterday. All seemed ok from the outside but a car was parked in my drive(not loosing too much sleep about that yet as long as its gone by the time we get back from holiday)
Mum knocked on next door neighbours door which a teenage girl answered. Mum said who she was and needed my key and can she have a word with neighbour please? The girl went inside and after several minutes returned with my key stating her gran was 'lying down'. Mum and sis/bil went inside my house and said everything looked normal. Electric switches all turned off apart from the internet which bil disconnected (I am 100% sure I turned it off), upstairs the bathroom door was open (I closed all the doors) but otherwise everything else looked normal as it could be to mum and sis. My partner now wants me to relax and enjoy the couple of days left before we return home. Once home I am going to go round to neighbour with her key to give it back and tell her she shouldn't have been texting asking after I already said no.

I wouldn't give her key back.

i would wait until she went shopping, then go in and close/open all internal doors, after texting her saying "Is it okay if I go into your kitchen and make a cup of tea? My kettle's broken down"

Text this 50 times in half a minute then block her.

Emotionalsupportviper · 29/12/2022 09:46

OR - rather than knock on her door to return her key, just walk into her house uninvited and toss it on the table.

And tell her you've changed your locks.

Thank you! You’ve turned a pretty grim morning into a much more sparkling day! (You’ve definitely got a great talent there) 😹

We changed our default password. But put the new one on the little router card as it's got symbols and stuff in it.

oakleaffy · 29/12/2022 10:16

@Castleontheisland Sorry for doubting you !
( Your absence) Absolutely understand re sickness bug- had it last week and couldn’t look at my phone for almost 24h
Hope you are feeling a bit better
Glad your house was ok
You’ll know by the beds when you get back.

Millytante · 29/12/2022 10:17

Very glad there’s nothing worse than a tiny suspicion, and that quite possibly whipped up by our enthusiasm here. So it’s up to you how much invasion you let yourself feel, I guess.
All the same, next door are surely now cast into the Lake of Fire for their appalling behaviour via texts, and myself, I’d have to change all the locks now.
But now, get well! Enjoy what remains of your break, and take comfort in knowing that things back at the ranch surely didn’t get as bad as imagination suggested. 😽

oakleaffy · 29/12/2022 10:25

@@Castleontheisland Please DO NOT give your key back!

My neighbour had a family Tortoise 🐢 of great age and sentimental value ( Had belonged to a son who had tragically died)

Another Neighbour used to go round and care for tortoise, but would sometimes spend a long time in neighbour’s house .
( They did long holidays)

It transpired that I mentioned in passing how neighbour did well feeding and looking after house..
Turns out the feeding neighbour was snooping!

Drawers had been riffled through &c

After that I did tortoise duty as could do it without access to house.

The neighbour used to have all our keys!

🙈

Why would you give her back the key??

Why on earth would she keep it?

are you seriously suggesting she keep it and then enter the property and use for her own purposes knowing the stress and concern this has caused her? Or worse??

Benjispruce4 · 29/12/2022 10:34

It’s the neighbour’s key she is given back.

The OP is not giving the neighbour her own key, she is giving the neighbour’s key back.
