Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

To all those who have said that they have given their keys to neighbours that they have pleasant neighbourly relations with but aren’t close…

do you have children? Young teens that are sometimes home alone? Aren’t you at all concerned that this neighbours you aren’t close to may not be as they seem? Might have visitors to their home that don’t have any idea about… might have access to your house keys?

The OP is not giving the neighbour her own key, she is giving the neighbour’s key back.

Ok, got it.

ThinWomansBrain · 29/12/2022 10:44

thanks for update
I think I'd ba as concerned about a guest /relative of the neighbour giving the keys to a complete stranger (OP's DM)

More avoidance tactics, just like their not answering OP’s texts (in spite of having bombarded her with their own.)
Next door have shown their true selves in all this, and OP isn’t even back yet to have any conversation with them. Henceforth it’ll surely be pretty awkward, and OP will need to strengthen her own domestic security in various ways, since the neighbours are basically unreliable, or downright devious. What a shame!

So sorry you are going through this, love to you and your poor dd

@Castleontheisland Oh thank you but it isn’t my DD- another poster was asking for what might happen in their situation and was just passing on what I knew. Except in the wrong thread 🙄

I would be so tempted to casually mention that there are cameras installed in the house but you haven't got around to watching the footage yet... But never mention it again, refuse to talk about it etc.

BloomingXmas · 29/12/2022 12:32

Glad it was all okay

Oh I see..That makes a lot more sense.
When I left a key with my neighbour, I didn't have theirs.

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 29/12/2022 13:31

I do hope that you and your DH feel better soon, OP.
Can I join in with the others g an update when you get home?
Going back in time this reminded me of the time my parents went on holiday and asked 'Mrs Green' across the road to keep an eye on the place . I had left home at the time but still had stuff in my old bedroom including some posh formal wear stores in my wardrobe. On their return, Mrs Green popped over to tell my mum that the house was ok......"and doesn't 2dahlias have some lovely clothes. My Angelica tried them on, and they looked gorgeous. If 2dahlias ever wants to pass them on, she'd be thrilled."

BashfulClam · 29/12/2022 13:53

The bus happened to my ex. He had a close friend a few streets away and the each had a key for emergencies. He had to be away with work, he came back and his flat didn’t feel right. His bed had been slept in etc. Turns out the friend had a party and didn’t want it at his flat. Ruined their friendship.

Not really sure why but I automatically read your post in a Superintendent Hastings from Line of Duty accent.

But yes, that one really takes the biscuit!

Ha! And you’d be almost right, too. 😸💚

Mummieslncorporated · 29/12/2022 14:25

So it looks like they've used the house - I've got to wonder if one of them is on Mumsnet, and they got a heads up...

Quite. She can’t hide forever. What a muppet.

Hello all..you learn something new everyday here on mumsnet (thank you everyone who has replied to the thread.) We are on bt Internet and have never thought the password on the back of the hub could be changed. That is getting changed as soon as we get back as is the key barrels in front and back door locks ! For the people saying I might not have closed doors/turned off plugs in electric sockets..I double checked everything and know in my own mind I definitely had. This makes me feel quite sick! We are going home first thing tomorrow morning (one day early) as with the coughing/sickness bug we both have got we will feel better in our own house. And I really need to check everything is ok.

In my student days long ago, our rooms in a decidedly ‘Young Ones’ avant la lettre communal house would be locked if we cleared off home in the hols.
A couple of times I’d find the lock broken and revolting evidence of amorous goings on in my bed, but one weird time the lock seemed secure on my return, but inside my room there was a very weird discrepancy in the atmosphere. In my desk I had a small, painted Indian elephant, with ‘ivory’ tusks. Now these tusks were missing! Only the size of a couple of matches but my god, it was a puzzler. No other evidence of intrusion. 🤔

BillyMack · 29/12/2022 17:38

You can also check your router logs to see if it was switched back on. PM me if you want help looking at them!

GUARDIAN1 · 29/12/2022 17:57

If possible get someone to check your home. If you have a friend/family member who can do that and ask for your key, I would arrange that. I would be concerned about whether home contents insurance would be affected by other people moving in. I'm pretty sure them being in your home without consent would be the offence of burglary.

Sorry OP I hadn't seen your most recent post. Glad all is OK x

Back21970 · 29/12/2022 18:06

OMG!

Are your neighbours the family from the TV show Shameless????

Cheeky F in the extreme.

Brightened up my day reading about it though, ha ha 😂

Missingpop · 29/12/2022 18:07
