Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

@ttcat37 do you have the wrong thread?

ttcat37 · 29/12/2022 00:36

Absolutely the wrong thread 😂 but if anyone wants to know what the police will do if your DD’s dad hits her, there’s your answer 😬
No idea how to delete or edit, soz

ttcat37 · 29/12/2022 00:38

@Jenasaurus no I’m just an idiot on the wrong thread. Sorry for what would have been an exciting update for this thread

Castleontheisland · 29/12/2022 05:34

Sorry for late reply (partner and myself* *have gotten that awful coughing/sickness bug thats going around). My mum and sis/bil called in to my house yesterday. All seemed ok from the outside but a car was parked in my drive(not loosing too much sleep about that yet as long as its gone by the time we get back from holiday)
Mum knocked on next door neighbours door which a teenage girl answered. Mum said who she was and needed my key and can she have a word with neighbour please? The girl went inside and after several minutes returned with my key stating her gran was 'lying down'. Mum and sis/bil went inside my house and said everything looked normal. Electric switches all turned off apart from the internet which bil disconnected (I am 100% sure I turned it off), upstairs the bathroom door was open (I closed all the doors) but otherwise everything else looked normal as it could be to mum and sis. My partner now wants me to relax and enjoy the couple of days left before we return home. Once home I am going to go round to neighbour with her key to give it back and tell her she shouldn't have been texting asking after I already said no.

Why give the key back?

Tolerant · 29/12/2022 05:40

Why give the key back?

Read it again….OP is going to neighbour with her (the neighbour’s) key to give it back. The key caring arrangement has now ceased.

Thanks for the update OP. Hope you and your DP enjoy the rest of your holiday and feel better soon.

I hate to say it but it seems highly unlikely that the neighbour’s friends/ family simply used your internet and toilet. They obviously stayed over otherwise why bother going in at all?

Also very convenient that the neighbour couldn’t go to the door!

OP - enjoy the rest of your holiday. Awful you had to deal with this.

Pipsquiggle · 29/12/2022 06:39

Blimey - do you think they went in your house? The open door and Internet?

I did have a door at my old house that opened on its own - latch didn't work properly.

Get well soon. Hope you have a lovely holiday

LadyBiker · 29/12/2022 06:41

Thank you for update, op, glad all is well.

custardcreme77 · 29/12/2022 06:47

I don’t think they would be able to use your internet, though, unless they knew the password to access the router / modem or whatever it is called.

HauntedAbbey · 29/12/2022 07:01

@custardcreme77 many routers (like mine) have the password on the back.

rainbowstardrops · 29/12/2022 07:02

So it looks like they definitely have been in your house then even though you said no! I'd be wondering if I could trust them with my key after this.

Poinsettia12 · 29/12/2022 07:08

I feel like if they’d been in there would be more you’d notice (and maybe still will when you get home yourself). But the door and the internet plug I think just as likely you misremembered, surprised people see this as them definitely having been in

HauntedAbbey · 29/12/2022 07:15

There’s a simple way to be 100% certain. Go into your router settings and check the log of sites visited. If there is activity on the days you were away - there is your evidence!

ruralwanderer · 29/12/2022 07:22

Thank you for the update, hope you're feeling better soon and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

vvvvb · 29/12/2022 07:57

Yes! Please do check that when home again, OP. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Inkpotlover · 29/12/2022 08:33

It sounds like they definitely were inside your house if the bathroom door was left open and the Wifi was on, the CFs! I'd definitely be having words with NDN on my return if I were you, but in the meantime enjoy what's left of your holiday and I hope you feel better soon.

When we go away we shut every door too and unplug everything and I always go round the house right before I leave to double check I've done it. So when you know, you know, and OP knows she did this, so they must've been in.
