Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

I will be very disappointed if no one is in the house 😁

That's not nice @BloomingXmas

The best outcome is that no one has been in, the family get the key back and OP can get on with her holiday.

The alternative, will have awful repercussions.

I hope all is well OP

This is seriously concerning that 3 police units and tracker dogs turned up within five mins of a house alarm going off.

Surely there was a better use of all the resource, without even knowing the situation

Why is it seriously concerning? It’s an excellent response to a crime in progress. How long do you think it takes to a) burgle a house and b) get away? Burglars are notoriously difficult to catch and the prospect of catching a burglary in progress is one where every available resource will be sent to. Jeez. Police are used to being slagged off for being too slow to turn up but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of them being criticised for turning up too quickly and too many of them

Yup

CupOfAnxieTea · 28/12/2022 18:01

This would really ruin my holiday 😥 sorry this has happened OP.

JiffLemon · 28/12/2022 18:02

Shamelessly here for the update!

MadMadMadamMim · 28/12/2022 17:36

I would be absolutely furious at the idea of utter strangers letting themselves into my home and settling in to stay whilst I was away.

I cannot imagine anything worse.

This happened to me years ago. A friend with a key used my house to have her affair in while I worked away.

pensionconfusion · 28/12/2022 18:05

Ask your family to FaceTime you as they walk through the door. You will know if you see anything has moved or beds made differently and will know if anyone has stayed there.

blimey, I wonder if you're prepared to tell us how you found out, presume she at least knew she was out of order & hoped you'd not know! (not that I'm defending her) but the the thread subjects seem to think that using the place as a free hotel is a fair exchange for keeping an eye out.
Maybe we should blame the rise of airbnb?!

Falalalalalal · 28/12/2022 18:11

Also here for the update 😬

Salome61 · 28/12/2022 18:16

I am sorry this has happened to you but I've just had keys cut and was going to give them to my neighbours - I'm going to get a key box outside instead and only give the code to family.

Such bizarre behaviour, how can they think it is something you would agree to?

TheLadyofShalott1 · 28/12/2022 18:20

Please let us know how it went when you get a chance OP, and whatever the outcome, do stay on holiday, and try to put it behind you until you get home - as it sounds like you really need that rest 🎄🎄🎄

I think the OP will know if someone has been staying in her house, even if they’ve left it immaculate…. you’d just KNOW wouldn’t you??

I'd certainly know if someone had been in my house if i returned to find it immaculate!

theemojisthough · 28/12/2022 18:22

What's the verdict @Castleontheisland ?

This why ring doorbells are so useful. I am sorry your neighbours are spoiling your christmas break OP. It is extremely rude and entitled.

OMG, this is obviously a 'thing'!!
I will never ever give anyone my key (unless I've got cameras set up👀)

Yeah I'd know if someone had been in recently - the smell would be different, and certainly the bathroom...arghh can't even imagine a total stranger using my loo without permission!!

OP I hope you get to the bottom of this soon and really hope those people haven't been in your house.
